Illinois Pre-History What were the people like who created this Indian art? Sometime around 13,000 years ago, the last great eastern ice sheet, the Laurentian, reached down only to Wisconsin and was already receding. Paleo-Indians had migrated across the Bering Sea by the land bridge of the Aleutian Island chain (known as Beringia) from Siberia into North America and followed a corridor south between the retreating ice sheets, perhaps to hunt wooly mammoth. Recent theories propose the Solutrians of Ice-Age France also sailed west to America across the Atlantic Ocean along the south ridge of the polar ice cap more than 18,000 years ago. It is thought they brought Clovis point technology and genetic diversity (such as red hair and large noses) to Native Americans

Reinstallation of the American Indian Art Collection
A front-end exhibition evaluation with an art museum
Denver Art Museum, Denver, CO
Study Context
In 2003, the Denver Art Museum (DAM) was planning a new permanent exhibition for its renowned American Indian art collection. In 1988, the Museum's installation of its Indian art collection was revolutionary in the art museum world. Building upon this strong historic foundation, the Museum's mission statement for this project was to celebrate and promote the ongoing vitality and diversity of American Indian artists and artistic traditions through an engaging and provocative presentation of its collection. The exhibition's goal was to challenge prevalent stereotypes through a unique organization that would engage visitors with the art and the artists who created it. DAM staff used front-end evaluation as one tool to assess new methods for breaking down ingrained stereotypes.
Approach
Findings
We conducted four focus groups: two with individuals who had attended an American Indian event in the past 12 months; and two with individuals who has visited an art museum in the last 12 months and who rated their interest in American Indian art as disinterested or neutral. Focus group participants struggled with the exhibition's innovative organization because it did not immediately resonate with their prior knowledge and understanding of American Indian art. Even when some accepted that the organization was different than what they were accustomed to, others sought a familiar entry point, such as geography (e.g., Southwest Indians).

Indian Art Traditions of the Northwest Coast
1983 Carlson, Roy L. (ed.)
214 pages, figures. Price: $25.00 [ORDER NOW] This is a collection of eleven articles that came out of a 1976 symposium titled "The Prehistory of Northwest Coast Indian Art." Although more than two decades old, many of these articles are considered classics by students of NW Coast art and ethnography. Especially worth noting is Bill Holm’s article titled "Form in Northwest Coast Art." There also is a somewhat speculative article by Wilson Duff on meaning in Northern NW Coast art and an article about material from the Ozette archaeological site, which is housed in Neah Bay, Washington, at the Makah Cultural Research Center. There is a lengthy bibliography but no index; all illustrations are in black and white. Jeanette C. Mills

compiled by Jeanette C. Mills; updated March 2000; annotated, June 2000 The items in bold face are the ones I most highly recommend as introductory material on this subject. Most books on this bibliography define the Northwest Coast Indian culture area as being bordered on the south by the Columbia River and on the north by Yakutat Bay in Alaska. Averill, Lloyd J. and Daphne K. Morris. Northwest Coast Native and Native-Style Art: A Guidebook for Western Washington . Seattle: University of Washington Press, 1995. 215 pp. ISBN 0-295-97468-0 (paper). This guidebook provides information about NW Coast art, with a focus on Western Washington. It starts with an introduction to the Native art on the coast—its common forms and written descriptions of the major creatures. At the end there are brief artist biographies, tribe names and addresses, information about where to see and learn about the art, and an annotated bibliography. In between, the bulk of the text is a guidebook to the publicly accessible NW Coast art that can be found in Western Washington. It includes an index, mainly to names of people and institutions, and black and white illustrations. Brown, Steven C.

Indian art Interrelationship in Indian Arts Rock Cut Art Folk Art Modern Indian Art This article includes a history of Indian art, done by people within India, such as or by the Indian people, or by Indian expats abroad. The influence of Indian art has been extensive throughout the western world as the result of the invasions of Alexander the Great Buddhism , the cultural transference of Indian culture through England's interest in orientalism from the early 18th century onwards, with the greatest exchanges being in Victorian times, and then revived in the 1960s. The influence of Indian art in China, on Korean art , and elsewhere was equally dramatic as drawn from the influences of again Buddhism and the frequent exchanges of scholars from the 12th century onwards. Sotheby's recently had a huge international success in sales on Indian impressionists . This has led to immense valuations on other artists. Akbar Padamsee 's Mirror Image went for $1,86,000. Husain's Shatranj Ke Khiladi went for $1,44,000. Chittrovanu Mazumdar sold for $54,000. A
