Internet History
"In the Beginning, ARPA created the ARPANET. And the ARPANET was without form and void. And darkness was upon the deep. And the spirit of ARPA moved upon the face of the network and ARPA said, 'Let there be a protocol,' and there was a protocol. And ARPA saw that it was good. And ARPA said, 'Let there be more protocols,' and it was so. And ARPA saw that it was good. And ARPA said, 'Let there be more networks,' and it was so." Danny Cohen
By 1992, when this timeline ends,
  • the Internet has one million hosts
  • the ARPANET has ceased to exist
  • computers are nine orders of magnitude faster
  • network bandwidth is twenty million times greater.

The history of computing and the story of how the Internet came to be are fascinating subjects to me. After doing some reading and research on early computers and Internet history, I've put together some excellent links that you can explore to learn more at your leisure.
The Top Five! Check out this week's
most popular articles.
A Brief Internet History Lesson
The HISTORY OF COMPUTING PROJECT offers a timeline of the major events in the history of computers, biographies of computer pioneers, and even a history of video games. http://www.thocp.net/ HOBBES' INTERNET TIMELINE gives a brief history of Internet milestones from 1957 to present. http://www.zakon.org/robert/internet/timeline "WHERE WIZARDS STAY UP LATE: THE ORIGINS OF THE INTERNET" tells the story of the origins of the Internet, based on interviews with the people who made it happen. Perhaps you've never heard of Bob Taylor, Vint Cerf or J.R. Licklider but after reading this book you'll want to thank them. The following Internet timeline was compiled from timelines found at the following sites. Please refer to the sites listed for more detailed information about people, agencies, and events. Note that there is some conflict on exact dates when events occurred, partly because development times may span more than a year. In particular, some of the people involved in the early Internet pull dates out of their head. A technology or protocol is often released for testing on one date and officially announced on another date. Some sites obtain dates from RFC, but in many cases, RFCs are released either before or after the actual technology is put into use. Where there is discrepancy, I have dug deeper into RFC or fall back on Hobbes’ Internet Timeline. Note: Some of the papers are located at multiple sites. If a Web link fails, search for the paper’s title with an Internet search engine.
