W e already knew that the government of Iraq's prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki , was grinding to a halt when cabinet members stopped showing up . Now U.S. pols want to kick out Maliki himself, papers are reporting this morning. The only question is whether this stooge will flee before he's kicked out. we were supposed to have only 5,000 troops in Iraq by December 2006 . Instead, we have more than 25 times that number in August 2007. In any case, Maliki had better have his affairs in order. From this morning's

    A quick comment on this: as I have long feared, maximalism is setting in. The Kurds trying to upend Jaafari strikes me as a losing proposition. There are no two ways around it, the Shia Arab block and population is Islamist in its views. Kurds are not going to be able to undo that. Screwing with the government is simply going to push to the Shia towards the view they have to maximalize. Already the sweet smell of civil war is in the air. Kurds are being short termist. Home Commentary Home February 6, 2007 Sorting out the good guys and the bad guys in the Iraqi governmen t Today CNN.com informs us that Jamal Jafaar Mohammed, a convicted terrorist, has won a seat on the Iraqi parliament. Jamal Jafaar Mohammed was convicted of bombing the French and American embassies in Kuwait in 1983. This esteemed Iraqi legislator was also involved in the 1984 hijacking of a Kuwaiti airliner. And then there are all the things that we don’t yet know about Jamal Jafaar Mohammed’s resume, which are sure to surface in the weeks ahead. Does Iraqi “democracy” mean legislators who have bombed American embassies in the Middle East? Apparently so. As U.S. troop deaths in Iraq continue to climb, and President Bush asks Congress for an additional $141.7 billion for nation-building in the region, dumfounded Americans understandably ask: How the $%#! did this happen? Jamal Jafaar Mohammed The answer is complicated, due to the blurry line between Iraq’s terrorists and Iraq’s mainstream politicians. Jamal Jafaar Mohammed the convicted terrorist is a member of a political party known as al-Dawa. Al-Dawa’s full name is

    Iraq Government Confirms Sadr In Iran
    Ed Morrissey The controversy over the whereabouts of Moqtada al-Sadr has ended. An advisor to Nouri al-Maliki confirmed on the record that Sadr is in Iran, as the US reported earlier: An adviser to Iraq's prime minister said Thursday that radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr is in Iran, but denied he fled due to fear of arrest during an escalating security crackdown. Sami al-Askari said al-Sadr traveled to Iran by land "a few days ago," but gave no further details on how long he would stay in Iran. A member of al-Sadr's bloc in parliament, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of fear of reprisals, said al-Sadr left three weeks ago. Sadr's supporters insist that he is still in Iraq, but no one has seen the non-reclusive Shi'ite firebrand in weeks. If Sadr remains in Najaf, as his mouthpieces claim, all he has to do is show himself. He could call a press conference or hold a rally; the US wouldnt stop him from either activity, and it would prove that he didn't tuck tail and run from the new US/Iraqi security program for Baghdad. ... Where Sadr Calls Home

    "If we take the full meaning of the term society into consideration, it will be seen that till now human beings have not been able to form a real society. If India builds a society for only Indians, Pakistan for only Pakistanis, and England for only the English, then these three separate societies will exist, but we cannot look upon them as the society of humanity. Because humanity is divided into groups, one society will naturally try to thrive by exploiting the vitality of others. You will notice that efforts are being made to establish so-called societies in some particular part of the world, for some particular section of the people, and based on some particular 'ism" or faith. A social consciousness based on such divisions lies latent in the minds of the people, whether they are Indian, Pakistani or English, so they remain absorbed in thoughts of their smaller groups." - Shrii Prabhat R. Sarkar

    "Human beings have still not been able to form a human society, and have still not learned to move with the spirit of a pilgrim. Although many small groups, motivated by self-interest, work together in particular situations, not even a small fraction of their work is done with a broader social motive. By strict definition, shall we have to declare that each small family unit is a society in itself? If going ahead in mutual adjustment only out of narrow self-interest or momentary self-seeking is called society, then in such a society, no provision can be made for the disabled, the diseased or the helpless, because in most cases nobody can benefit from them in any way... in that case there always remains the possibility of some people getting isolated from the collective. All human beings must attach themselves to others by the common bond of love and march forward hand in hand; then only will I proclaim it a society." - Shrii Prabhat R. Sarkar

    From Grolier's The New Book of Knowledge Under its provisional constitution, Iraq is a republic based on socialism. The highest authority is exercised by the Revolutionary Command Council, whose members include the President, who is the head of state and government. The President is elected by the Revolutionary Command Council. The Council of Ministers handles the government administration. But the Baath (“Revival”) Party remains the most-important political influence in the government. The nation’s legislature, the National Assembly, has 250 members, who serve four-year terms. Of these, 30 are appointed by the chief of state and 220 are elected by popular vote. var SA_Message="IC=Scholastic-Teachers-Online_Activities-Scholastic_News-News_In_Depth"; var SA_ID="scholas;scholas";
