    Iraq Government
I must say, that this story makes me uneasy. On the one hand, executing the duties of government before it has been decided how that government will be structured is a dangerous way to do things. On the other hand, having a full soverign government when the constitution is written will lend some independence too it and shield it from criticism that it was dictated by the Americans. Time will tell. I think that I would prefer to see the constitution written first. Posted by Owen at 1038 hrs

Shock and awful: Turn to page 17 of your haven't-got-a-prayer book (otherwise known as "Tab K" ) for this exciting and formerly secret map of Iraq from the U.S. military's August 2002 invasion plans. W e already knew that the government of Iraq's prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki , was grinding to a halt when cabinet members stopped showing up . Now U.S. pols want to kick out Maliki himself, papers are reporting this morning.

Good for them I say. sytaylor 03-08-04, 03:45 PM Suprised most with how liberal it is (liberal in the true sense of the word, ie not fundementalist). The Shia's wanted to make some fundementalist noise but I think there is a tonne of pressure coming down on each of them from the americans to get this right. A lot of good work going on there for sure. bigC 03-08-04, 04:21 PM Originally posted by UDawg

Good for them I say. words on a piece of paper are meaningless if they're not backed by actions. a few people in suits signed a document that will be utterly worthless if the people on the street do not live in peace and accept the democratic principles thrust upon them.
 the year comment. different times. today, we have 24 hour news stations, internet news sites, chat pages, etc. that greatly influence public and political opinion. instant information. instant reaction to world events. there wasn't constant media pressure to get the hell out of Japan ASAP as there is to get out of Iraq quickly.

American Withdrawal From Iraq Won't Happen?
More than only a few political pundits believe that the U.S. Army is in Iraq on a permanent basis much like they have maintained a presence on the Korean Peninsula and in Japan since the Korean and Second World wars, respectively. The Pentagon and White House has been talking about a sustained presence in the Middle East, upwards of 50 years, in order to maintain control of political and economic interests in the region.
As recently as May 31, Robert Gates said that a "long and enduring presence" was under an arrangement with the Iraq government. "The Korea model is one, the security relationship we have with Japan is another." As Mr.Seale points out, the White House believes the situation in Iraq and "the larger war on terror", are things that are going to take a long time.
These comments coming from the White House and Pentagon are in contrast to the current debates going on in Congress and in the public eye about getting American troops home from the Iraqi bloodbath that is killing more and more U.S. troops for each month the war continues.
Mr.Seale proposes that the U.S. military presence is aimed at the retention of energy reserves. The other obvious one is the proximity to Iran and the oil-rich Gulf which encompasses a vast area of political and economic importance to the U.S. One should not overlook the Israeli question; Iran has overtly proposed wiping Israel from the map (although translation experts have said they meant the Zionist regime and not the Jews).
