My Iraqi Story My Iraqi Art My Iraqi Recipes My Iraq Websites ... My Iraqi History My Iraqi History Brief History... M odern-day Iraq (the Arabic word for “cliff’) contains the ancient land of Mesopotamia, or “the land between the rivers”. The rivers are the Tigris and the Euphrates, which originate in the mountains of Turkey and flow southward through Syria into Iraq. Between these two rivers lies a fertile plain where, as far as the known, the 1 st human civilization flourished. By the year 4000 BC, the Sumerians had established cities and government institutions, the earliest known on the planet. Writing, mathematics and science also began in Sumer. The Akkadians conquered Sumer in 2334 BC, but a mere 200 years later, the Sumerians regained control of the region. From then on, a series of people invaded and conquered this fertile land. The Babylonians gained control in 1900 BC and ruled for 300 years, during which king Hammurabi developed his famous law code. The Assyrians followed the Babylonians, then the Chaldeans took over in the 7 th century BC. Perhaps the best remembered Chaldean leader was Nebuchadnezzar II, who reigned from 605 to 562 BC from the capital city of Babylon, and build one of the seven wonders of the world, the Hanging gardens.

    SHORT:) 'al- c
Location : The Republic of Iraq is located in the heart of the Middle East. It is bordered on the north by Turkey, on the east by Iran, on the south by Kuwait and the northern Arab/Persian Gulf and on the west by Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Syria. This accurately describes the main physical features of the country; the two river valleys of the Tigris and Euphrates, both of which rise in Turkey, follow a parallel southeasterly course before merging around Basra to form the Shatt al-Arab waterway and flowing into the Gulf. Map from Gulf-Law.com Society : Iraq is currently home to an estimated 25 million people (2003 estimate). The capital is Baghdad. Most of the population is Arab. Arabs are 80 percent of the total in Iraq. The Kurds are 15 percent of the population; and the other ethnic groups including Turkoman and Assyrian make up the remaining 5 percent. Approximately 95% of the population is Muslim, divided between the Shiite majority and a minority of Sunni adherents. Arabic is the official language of Iraq and is spoken by about 75% of the population.

Present Politics in Persia The politics of both Iran and Iraq have been primarily dominated by two leaders for the past quarter of a century. For Iran, the leader was the Ayatollah Khomeini, and for Iraq it is the infamous Saddam Hussein. Iran's Political Situation Ayatollah Khomeini http://www.time.com/time/time100/leaders/profile/khomeini.html During the 1950's and 1960's, Iran started to use the wealth they gained from oil to better their society upon encouragement from the United States. However, the spreading of this wealth did not reach all people and caused rising prices. As a result, there was social unrest in the form of religious discontentment. This lead to the take over of the government by the Ayatollah Khomeini when the shah ran from the country. Ayatollah Khomeini spread the idea that the U.S. was the "Great Satan". His strategy in doing so was to reject Western ways and stick closer to Islamic ways. He also backed a kidnapping of 56 Americans held hostage in the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. This lead to poor relations with the United States that continue today. The Ayatollah ruled from 1979 until his death in 1989. Today, Iran is lead by President Mohammad Khatami. He is part of a new and more liberal democracy which was instituted following the death of the Ayatollah. Iraq's Political Situation Saddam Hussein http://www.achilles.net/~sal/iraq_history.html
