The Priory building at The Mount was originally the Admiralty Residence which had in more recent times been used as the Generalate and Novitiate of the Cloyne Sisters of Mercy. The St Benedict's community has enlarged the Priory Chapel and the guest facilities. The monastic hospitality takes the form of private retreats, an Irish Monastic Heritage Centre and a Bible Garden, and more recently - Leanbh, a memorial pool for those in grief after the loss of a child. The Monastic Heritage Centre provides a fascinating presentation of the history of Monasticism in Ireland. The Bible Garden provides an ambience for all who seek a secluded place to meditate on the Bible in the setting of biblical trees, plants and flowers.

The Irish people are mainly of Celtic origin, with the country's only significant sized minority having descended from the Anglo-Normans. English is the common language, but Irish (Gaelic) is also an official language and is taught in schools.
Anglo-Irish writers such as Swift, Sheridan, Goldsmith, Burke, Wilde, Joyce, Yeats, Shaw, and Beckett have made a major contribution to world literature over the past 300 years.
The earliest inhabitantspeople of a mid-Stone Age culturearrived about 6000 BC. About 4,000 years later, tribes from southern Europe arrived and established a high Neolithic culture, leaving behind gold ornaments and huge stone monuments. The Bronze Age people, who arrived during the next 1,000 years, produced elaborate gold and bronze ornaments and weapons.
The Iron Age arrived abruptly in the fourth century BC with the invasion of the Celts, a tall, energetic people who had spread across Europe and Great Britain in the preceding centuries. The Celts, or Gaels, and their more numerous predecessors divided into five kingdoms in which, despite constant strife, a rich culture flourished.
The coming of Christianity from across the Irish Sea brought major changes and civilizing influences. Tradition maintains that St. Patrick arrived on the island in AD 432 and, in the years that followed, worked to convert the Irish to Christianity.

The UK History... The N. Ireland Menu... In the early 17th century, as part of their plan to subjugate Ireland, the English government decided to 'plant' settlements of English and Scots colonists in Ulster, on land taken away from the native Irish who had remained faithful to the Catholic religion and were regarded as potential rebels. These plantations are the historical cause of the present ethnic and religious divide. The Protestant community, mainly consisting of Presbyterians (of Scots origin), still form a majority in the north, whereas Catholics predominate in the south. The northern Catholics feel little allegiance to the British crown. Up to the 19th century, Ulster had been regarded as a remote and insignificant part of Ireland and of the British Isles as a whole. Protestants, and especially Presbyterians, made Ulster a province distinctly different from the rest of Ireland. Ulster Protestantism was regarded by Irish Catholics as a foreign and hostile phenomenon. In the early 19th century Belfast was an almost exclusively Protestant city but an influx of Roman Catholics from the countryside added a significant Roman Catholic minority. Changes in the British economy resulted in the rise of Belfast as the economic centre of Ireland. Religion or rather differences in religion soon became a dominant political force. A clash of identities between 'Britishness' and 'Irishness' became increasingly apparent.

Yet, it is a very pleasant climate, temperate thanks to Atlantic mild winds and Gulf Stream, where summers are cool but not cold, and winters very mild. What makes Ireland such an attractive touristic destination ? Mainly its preserved and beautiful natural environment. Ireland has long been a poor rural country with a low population density that has remained untouched by industrialization and intensive modern agriculture. It is now developing a more modern economy that has so far respected the quality of its environment, recognized to be a key factor of development. Boosted by

    History
The Celts, Iron Age warriors from eastern Europe, reached Ireland around 300 BC. They controlled the country for 1000 years and left a legacy of language and culture that survives today, especially in Galway, Cork, Kerry and Waterford. The Romans never reached Ireland, and when the rest of Europe sank into the decline of the Dark Ages after the fall of the empire, the country became an outpost of European civilisation, particularly after the arrival of Christianity, between the 3rd and 5th centuries. During the 8th century Viking raiders began to plunder Ireland's monasteries. The Vikings settled in Ireland in the 9th century, and formed alliances with native families and chieftains. They founded Dublin, which in the 10th century was a small Viking kingdom. The English arrived with the Normans in 1169, taking Wexford and Dublin with ease. The English king, Henry II, was recognised by the pope as Lord of Ireland and he took Waterford in 1171, declaring it a royal city. Anglo-Norman lords also set up power bases in Ireland, outside the control of England. English power was consolidated under Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The last thorn in the English side was Ulster, final outpost of the Irish chiefs, in particular Hugh O'Neill, earl of Tyrone. In 1607 O'Neill's ignominious departure, along with 90 other chiefs, left Ulster leaderless and primed for the English policy of colonisation known as 'plantation' - an organised and ambitious expropriation of land and introduction of settlers which sowed the seeds for the division of Ulster still in existence today.

    Ireland
Ireland is a sovereign, independent, democratic state with a parliamentary system of government. The president, who serves as chief of state in a largely ceremonial role, is elected for a 7-year term and can be re-elected only once. In carrying out certain constitutional powers and functions, the President is aided by the Council of State, an advisory body. On the Taoiseach's (prime minister's) advice, the president also dissolves the Oireachtas (parliament). The president appoints as prime minister the leader of the political party, or coalition of parties, which wins the most seats in the Dail (house of representatives). Executive power is vested in a cabinet whose ministers are nominated by the Taoiseach and approved by the Dail. The bicameral Oireachtas consists of the Seanad Eireann (senate) and the Dail Eireann (house of representatives). The Seanad is composed of 60 members11 nominated by the prime minister, six elected by the national universities, and 43 elected from panels of candidates established on a vocational basis. The senate has the power to delay legislative proposals and is allowed 90 days to consider and amend bills sent to it by the Dail, which wields greater power in parliament. The Dail has 166 members popularly elected to a maximum 5-year term under a complex system of proportional representation. Judges are appointed by the president on nomination by the government and can be removed from office only for misbehavior or incapacity, and then only by resolution of both houses of parliament. The ultimate court of appeal is the Supreme Court, consisting of the chief justice and five other justices. The Supreme Court also can decide upon the constitutionality of legislative acts if the president asks for an opinion.

    History of Ireland
The History of Ireland is the story of a large island at the north-west of Europe and is heavily influenced by the concurrent History of Britain, its larger neighbour to the east. The first humans inhabited Ireland from around 7500 BC and, in time, were responsible for major Neolithic sites such as Newgrange and early writing. Christianity replaced Paganism by A.D. 600 and brought a written culture and monastic art, most famously in the Book of Kells. Irish is the indigenous language of the island's inhabitants, though settlers such as the Vikings and Normans introduced others. Today, for historical reasons, the overwhelming majority mother-tongue is English. Overt English colonial interest in Ireland began with a Norman invasion in 1169, but the Crown of England did not gain full control until the whole island had been subjected to numerous military campaigns in the period 1534–1691, which included the Desmond Rebellions, the Nine Years War (Ireland), the Irish Confederate Wars, and the Williamite war in Ireland, and was colonised in the Plantations of Ireland. From 1782–1800, Ireland regained a form of self-governing status through the Parliament of Ireland, but power was limited to the Anglo-Irish, Anglican minority while the majority Roman Catholic population suffered severe political and economic privations. This brief experiment was terminated following the outbreak (and vicious suppression) of the 1798 rebellion. In 1801, this parliament was abolished and Ireland became an integral part of a new United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland under the Act of Union. The new political system led to a massive decline in trade and investment as business activity switched to London. In the 1840s, the population of Ireland fell, due to a catastrophic famine and emigration, from a peak of 8 million in 1840 to 4.4 million in 1911.
