Irish Literature encompasses the Irish and English languages. The island's most widely-known literary works are undoubtedly in English . Particularly famous examples of such works are those of James Joyce Oscar Wilde , and Ireland's four winners of the Nobel Prize for Literature William Butler Yeats George Bernard Shaw Samuel Beckett and Seamus Heaney . Ireland's oldest literary traditions, however, are found in the Irish language , referred to simply as " Irish ". Indeed, Irish has the third oldest literature in Europe (after Greek and Latin and the most significant body of written literature (both ancient and recent) of any Celtic language . Furthermore, the historic influence of Irish language traditions, such as a strong oral tradition of legends and poetry, has helped make much English Literature in Ireland quite distinctive from that in other countries. From the older tradition, many Irish writers in English inherited a sense of wonder in the face of nature, a narrative style that tends towards the deliberately exaggerated or absurd and a keen sense of the power of satire. In addition, the interplay between the two languages has resulted in an English dialect

Early Irish Literature: Before 1200 Irish is a Celtic language, brought to Ireland from the European mainland by Celtic peoples who arrived in the late 6th century bc . The Celts lived in some 150 small agricultural communities called tuatha, each with its own king. Cattle were the measure of a tuatha’s wealth. In this society, poets called filidh had responsibility for preserving and transmitting the tuatha’s heritage, its history, and the genealogy of its rulers. Filidh underwent long training, during which they mastered the complicated meters of Celtic verse, composed poems in praise of kings, and memorized long genealogies, histories, and other lore. Filidh had great status in their tuatha and they exerted their power, often in the form of satire, to keep members of the tuatha in line. The people feared their satire, which shamed or humiliated its target. A poet’s harsh words were said to be so powerful they could drive rats away. Our knowledge of these ancient narratives comes from fragments written down long after their composition. Modern scholars have organized this early literature into four groups of stories called cycles, which are related by theme. These cycles are the Mythological, the Ulster, the Fenian, and the Historical (or Kings). The Ulster and Fenian cycles narrate the deeds of ancient heroes, and the Historical Cycle tells the lives of kings. Like important early works in other literary traditions—for example, the

Earliest Manuscripts. Early Christian Scholars in Ireland. Siadal , now Shiel in English), the author of the "Carmen Paschale", who flourished in the first half of the fifth century, and who has been called the Virgil of theological poetry, was almost certainly an Irishman. Indeed the Irish geographer Dicuil in the eighth century calls him noster Sedulius , all of which shows that some Irish families at least were within the reach of a cosmopolitan literary education in the fourth and fifth centuries and that they were quick to grasp it. Existing Manuscript Literature. Contents of the Manuscripts. From what we know of the contents of the existing manuscripts we may set down as follows a rough classification of the literature contained in them. We may well begin with the ancient epics dating substantially from pagan times, probably first reduced to writing in the seventh century or even earlier. These epics are generally shot through with verses of poetry and often with whole poems, just as in the case of the French chantefable Early Irish Epic or Saga.

Frank O'Connor's concept of the short story (presentation by Maria Gotthardt) on the basis of O'Connor's The Lonely Voice- Study of the Short Story (1962), chap. 1: - main point: a short story is about a submerged population group - characters of a short story are not integrated into society: 'outsiders' - examples of short stories dealing with submerged characters: L. O'Flaherty's "The Pedlar's Revenge", S. Anderson's "Lonely Dreamers of the Middle West", J. Joyces "Clarks"
