(Powered By The Rozaleenda Group, Inc.
Oscar oscara = 'deerlover') is a figure in the Fenian Cycle of Irish mythology . He is the warrior son of Oisn and the fairy woman Niamh , who also bore his sister, Plor na mBan . Oisn, in turn, was the son of the epic hero Fionn mac Cumhail . Though a late addition to the cycle, Oscar was a popular character, and appeared prominently in several later Fenian tales, serving his grandfather as one of the Fianna . His death is described in the story The Battle of Gabhra , which pits the increasingly corrupt Fianna against the army of High King Cairbre Lifechair . Cairbre, aided by defected Fianna warriors loyal to Goll mac Morna , receives his death blow from Oscar, but mortally wounds him with his spear as his final act. Oscar's death causes Fionn to weep for the only time in his life.

(Redirected from Irish Mythology The mythology of pre-Christian Ireland did not entirely survive the conversion to Christianity , but much of it was preserved, shorn of its religious meanings, in medieval Irish literature , which represents the most extensive and best preserved of all the branches of Celtic mythology . Although many of the manuscripts have failed to survive, and much more material was probably never committed to writing, there is enough remaining to enable the identification of four distinct, if overlapping, cycles: the Mythological Cycle , The Ulster Cycle , the Fenian Cycle and the Historical Cycle . There are also a number of extant mythological texts that do not fit into any of the cycles. In addition, there are a large number of recorded folk tales that, while not strictly mythological, feature personages from one or more of these four cycles. Contents showTocToggle("show","hide")

Ness (Irish mythology) - Definition Ness is an Ulster princess and the mother of Conchobar mac Nessa in the Ulster Cycle of Irish mythology She was the daughter of Eochaid Sálbuide , king of Ulster. According to one version of the legend, she onced asked the druid Cathbad what that day was a good day for, and he replied that it was a good day to conceive a king. There were no other men around, so Ness took Cathbad to bed, and Conchobar was conceived. In another version, Ness was brought up by twelve foster-fathers. Cathbad, who was a warrior leading a landless band of twenty-seven men before he became a druid, led a raid on her foster-fathers' house, killing them all. Ness swore revenge and became a warrior herself, leading her own band of twenty-seven to try and find the culprit. However, one day she went off on her own to bathe. Cathbad came upon her alone and unarmed and demanded her as his wife. She had no choice but to agree. They married, and in due course Ness bore a son, Conchobar, who was brought up as Cathbad's son although his true father may have been Ness's lover, Fachtna Fáthach , the High King of Ireland By the time Conchobar was seven
