Sep 16, 2005 3:03 PM rasputin - Maps and pictures I'll soon be discussing the spread of Islam and I'm not particularly adept at importing pictures to a discussion board. If anyone would like to participate, one thing that would be helpful would be old maps of the Middle East and Asia at various times during the period between 600 AD and 1300 AD. I should say at this point that I have "borrowed" many phrases, sentences and even entire paragraphs from Professor Clark's book. I'm not going to compete with Professor Clark's writing ability. He received a Masters degree and a Ph.D. from Yale. Rasputin did not. So, if the wording of portions of this review seem especially good, it's probably Dr. Clark's. If the wording seems a bit awkward, assume it's mine. Obviously the typos (and there are likely many) are mine.

    Islamic Art:
Art, Architecture and the Literary World
    Robert Irwin
Laurence King 1997 A book review by Danny Yee Islamic Art is an illustrated history that takes a broad approach, covering architecture, crafts, and aesthetics as well as "art" in the narrow sense, and placing them within their social and historical context. It extends to around 1700, but does not cover the entire Islamic world, only the arid area from Morocco to Afghanistan. Irwin begins with Islam's inheritance from the Byzantines, the Sasanians, and pre-Islamic Arab culture; he touches on the Islamic sense of the past and aesthetic of ruins. This is followed by a rapid survey of the Islamic world and Islamic history. Mosques are central to Islamic architecture, but have by no means been static. "Minarets may now be seen as entirely characteristic of Muslim religious architecture, but the very first mosques had none." Patronage was critical, and rulers often reworked earlier buildings, making major monuments "architectural palimpsests". The ban on representations of humans is perhaps the best known aspect of Islamic art, but

Beyond the Palace Walls: Islamic Art from the State Hermitage Museum Royal Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh
14 July-5 November 2006 Perhaps the most dramatic set piece displayed in the Royal Museum is a large, official tent, into which exhibition visitors can wander through a single opened side. This is a square structure, with a simple duo-pitched roof. Externally, it is impressive chiefly for its size, but this lack of decoration is in complete contrast to the interior, which combines highly decorated fabrics. While not quite in the realm of a conspicuous display of wealth, it conveys high importance of status on the part of its owner/occupant. The 19th-century English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote of Kubla Khan , with its 'stately pleasure dome decreed'. This is probably in a different class of importance, but much of that opulent aesthetic is suggested by this construct. Internally, this tent of high officialdom (probably that of a general of high rank, used as a campaign tent), was carefully adopted without apparent damage by the Tsarist officers who took it in charge as captured booty. After use in the rival army of the Tsar, it was finally sent to the Hermitage in 1848. Weapon displays include a rifle decorated with coral (a flintlock piece). A 19th-century gold saddle stands nearby, as presented to Tsar Alexander I by the Khan of Khugan. The Russian priesthood were also seduced by such Islamic decorative skills. A late 17th-century cape, of Iranian silken velvet, reveals the influence of Turkish design, having also a motif of trees and flowers in serried rows. The main section of this exhibition focuses on the cultures of 'the Tulip and the Lotus', the golden age of Islamic art, between the 14th and 19th centuries, showing the continued interaction of East and West.

The birth of Islam in the 7 th century A.D In the seventh century B.C the religion of Islam began to spread from the desert plains of Asia into all the areas surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, ranging as far north as the Byzantine Empire and west, into the northern areas of Africa and the entirety of Spain . The mentality that pervades all of the Islamic art is homogonous throughout all of these areas, as this art form draws its complex, decorative designs from the ancient art of calligraphy that is unique to the holy book of the Muslims- the Koran. It also shows clear influences from Sassanian and Byzantine art. The central place of religious calligraphy in Islamic art This rigid, calligraphic artistic mentality was used in all of the Muslim countries and can be easily recognized around the world. In the tradition of Muslim beliefs, art was almost never made for personal or secular purposes and so much of it is seen together- in the severe, gigantic architectural proportions of the Mosques, in the carpets that were lain down for the prayers convenience, in the dazzling mass of decorations that embellish almost every wall and opening. There is, however, so much diversity of nuance in each particular culture and country; each is influenced by ethnicity and language, the period of time in which it was built and the political reality of the time. In some countries the style was stripped of its weighty ornamentation and mosques are left utterly bare and austere, with only some glimmers of bright color, in others there is not a single space left untouched and unadorned.

The ascent of Islam, its rich history and magnificent civilizations has earned it prominence in the history of mankind. The treasures and cultures of these artisans have bestowed upon us an appreciation and understanding of Islamic arts and culture. The success of the World Islamic Civilization Festival held at the Islamic Center of Kuala Lumpur in 1994, saw the compelling need to establish a permanent center of learning and research to preserve its history, arts and cultural heritage.
The Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia (IAMM) was officially opened on December 12, 1998 (23 Syaaban 1419), as a gift to the people of Malaysia and the international community from the Albukhary Foundation , with the assistance of the Malaysian government and the Islamic Department of the Islamic Development of Malaysia (JAKIM).

Here are two more portraits of Shah Tahmasp. The second man in the image to the right is Aqa Mirak The oldest Mashhad rugs that I know of are a group of prayer rugs that were given by Shah Tahmasp to Suleyman the Magnificent in 1556. The rugs were made in three grades by the workshop of Sultan Ibrahim Mirza son of Sam Mirza and nephew of Shah Tahmasp. The top grade or Imperial grade was the finest and one of those rugs was in London two years ago and I believe is now in the hands of art collector Sheikh Saud Al-Thani of Qatar. Several of the second and third grade examples are still in the Topkapi Museum.

From Islamic Art you can also connect to the Form and Structure theme Escher Maurits Escher was born in Leeuwarden, Holland in 1898. His father was an architect and his family had hoped that he would follow the same career, but he was not a successful student. However, his talent as an artist was evident from an early age and instead he became a graphic artist with a penchant for simple Mediterranean landscapes. Then, in October 1922, he visited the Alhambra Palace for the first time and was deeply impressed by what he saw. Recalling that visit twenty years later, he wrote (see 'M.C. Escher, His Life and Complete Graphic Work') “The fitting together of congruent figures whose shapes evoke in the observer an association with an object or a living creature intrigued me increasingly after that first Spanish visit in 1922. And although at the time I was mainly interested in free graphic art, I periodically returned to the mental gymnastics of my puzzles. In about 1924, I first printed a piece of fabric with a wood block of a single animal motif which is repeated according to a particular system, always bearing in mind the principle that there may not be any 'empty spaces'... I exhibited this piece of printed fabric together with my other work, but it was not successful. This is partly the reason why it was not until 1936, after I had visited the Alhambra a second time, that I spent a large part of my time puzzling with animal shapes.”
