The Italian Section General presentation
In the period between the two world wars, Timisoara had three important personalities in the field of Italian Studies: George Calinescu, Ioachim Miloia and Silvia Guarnieri. In this city, there was an important Italian community and an Italian Consulate. When Prof. Maria Belisare came to Timisoara from Bucharest, a solid tradition of teaching Italian was established at the University and at the House of Culture, from the 50s up to the 70s when Prof. Belisare retired. After this, Italian will be taught by Prof. Iosif-Cheie Pantea at the University and by Prof. Viorica Balteanu at the Cultural-Scientific (Popular) University of Timisoara. The Italian Section was established in 1997, coordinated by Lecturer Dr. Viorica Balteanu. Teachers like Prof. Dr. Ileana Oancea, Lecturer Daniele Pantaleoni, Lecturer Maria Luisa Lombardo and Assistant Lecturer Afrodita Carmen Cionchin have been working hard to ensure the proper training for the 80 students who have chosen Italian as a minor subject and the 250 students from other faculties who chose Italian as an elective course. More than 30 students benefited from grants and spent training stages in Italy.

FINE ARTS DEPARTMENTS DESIGN DEPARTMENTS ITALIAN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT Overview: SRISA requires that students who come to Florence for semester programs take Italian at some level. Even a minimal amount of language will open a door to Italian thought and culture in a very direct way and make the whole Italian experience richer and more fulfilling. Learning Italian brings students closer to the culture and the city where they are living. Those students who choose the Italian language as their primary educational goal have the opportunity to enroll in the Intensive Italian Language Program. The SRISA courses offer a full-immersion language program where class lessons are taught in Italian from the first day. This method exposes students immediately to the language and develops listening and speaking skills. All instructors are native Italian speakers who also speak fluent English and thus, when necessary, are able to give explanations in English. Language Exchanges: Students will have the opportunity to participate in arranged language exchanges ( scambi ) with Italian students who are studying English. These exchanges will take place outside of class time and are coordinated by the Italian instructors. Intensive Italian students will be required to participate in these language exchanges

It is the official language in Italy San Marino Vatican City Switzerland and in some cities of Slovenia and Croatia . It is also used in some parts of Monaco Malta Albania Dodecaneso ... Croatia and some other places. It is mostly derived from Latin , with some words from Greek Etruscan and elsewhere. It is called an inflected language - that means that the meaning of words can be changed by changing their endings. Italian nouns are either masculine or feminine (these are grammatical terms, normally only indirectly to do with sex). Most singular masculine nouns end in -o, and most plural masculine nouns end in -i. Most singular feminine nouns end in -a, and most plural feminine nouns end in -e. So:

MyMedia-Forum.com LOST LOST Cast and Character Discussion Main Characters ... PDA View Full Version : Juliet's Namesake One Oh Eight 10-05-2006, 07:09 PM Did a quick search and didn't see a thread about this. Although it is likely it was mentioned in the episode thread. But regardless, Juliet is such an uncommon adult female name in 2004 that I think it needs (a little) attention.
Everyone knows the story about Romeo and Juliet. And people have been speculating as to the relationship with Benry and Juliet, but I don't think (if there is supposed to be a direct connection between LOST's Juliet and Shakespeare's Juliet) that Benry ~ Romeo. An interesting observation, though, is that Ethan's last name is Rom (which is, of course, the first three letters of Romeo's name), and he was shown in the opening gambit in 3.1. And he died a week later. But Ethan ~ Romeo is a bit of a stretch since Ethan's last name is due to the anagram "other man".
So this leaves us with Jack. Many people foresee that Jack and Juliet will hook up (wouldn't it have been great if they named her 'Jill' instead of Juliet?), but if Juliet's name means something (and with the name Juliet, and knowing how keen TPTB are with naming conventions), then this might lead us to think she will die soon.
    Taken from Wikipedia:
"The play takes place over a time span of less than one week. Within these few days, young Juliet is thrust into adulthood with little warning. During the play she is courted by a potential husband, falls in love, marries illicitly, loses her virginity, experiences the death of a cousin she is close to, is threatened and nearly disowned by both of her parents, is betrayed by the nurse who raised her from infancy, becomes suicidal, spends nearly two days drugged to unconsciousness, is widowed, and commits suicide next to the body of her husband. Shakespeare's Juliet is a headstrong and intelligent character...."

The Italian writing system in its modern form begins to emerge in the 13 th Century with the writings of Dante Alighieri ( The Divine Comedy ), Petrarch and Boccaccio, all of whom wrote in the Tuscan dialect of Florence. According to omniglot.com , the popularization of the Florentine dialect by these authors caused it to catch on in political and cultural circles in Italy in the 14 th Century, and it slowly overtook Latin as the standard written language by the 16 th Century. Italian is now regulated by the Accademia della Crusca , which was established in Florence in 1583 and was responsible for publishing the first Italian dictionary in 1612.
