Sardinian Festivals May is a big month in the island of Sardinia, off the Western coast of Italy. It opens with the Sagra di Sant'Efisio in Cagliari, the capital of the region, situated on its southern coast, and continues with the equally famous Cavalcata Sarda, in the northwestern city of Sassari. The Festival of Sant'Efisio The Cavalcata Sarda takes place in Sassari on the second-to-last Sunday in May. Its origins go back to the 1700s, although it didn't become a regular event until 1950. Horseback riders open and close a parade of over 3,000 people in traditional costumes that are dizzying in their specificity and variety: female and male costumes, clothes for Sundays and holidays and everyday clothes, those of rich and poor, fishermen and shepherds, those worn by married women and widows. Dancing and singing accompany the procession. The Famous Caffé Pedrocchi in Padua Restored

Home Study Abroad Italy Italy, as a state, did not exist until the unification of its city states, the Risorgimento, came to a conclusion around the year 1861. Due to this comparatively late unification, and the historical autonomy of the many regions that comprise the Italian Peninsula, many traditions and customs that we now recognize as distinctly Italian can be identified by their regions of origin, which further reflect the influence of the many different peoples that occupied those areas, and of the importance of religion, especially Roman Catholicism. Despite the pronounced political and social isolation of these regions that prevailed throughout Italy's history, Italy's contributions to the cultural and historical heritage of Europe remain immense. Italy has been a seminal place for many artistic and intellectual movements that spread throughout Europe and beyond, including the Renaissance and Baroque. Perhaps Italy's greatest cultural achievements lie in its long artistic heritage, which is often validated through the names of Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Donatello, Botticelli, Fra Angelico, Tintoretto, Caravaggio, Bernini, Titian and Raphael, among many others. Beyond art, Italy's contributions to the realms of literature, science and music cannot be overlooked. With the basis of the modern Italian language established through the eminent Florentine poet, Dante Alighieri, whose greatest work, the Divina Commedia is often considered the foremost literary statement produced in Europe during the Middle Ages, we find no shortage of celebrated literary figures; Boccaccio, Castiglione and Pirandello, and the poets Tasso, Ariosto, Leopardi, and Petrarca, whose best known vehicle of expression, the sonnet, was invented in Italy. Prominent philosophers include Bruno, Ficino, Machiavelli, Vico, Gentile, and Eco.

ITALIAN CULTURE
Since the rise of the Roman Empire and it’s spread across the known globe, Rome has been considered the seat of modern civilization. Since the fall of the Roman Empire, Italy came to be a major figure in the Renaissance, creating art, music, and ideas that would revolutionize the very nature of Western thought. Home to the Vatican, some of the best known ancient architecture, and some of the most renowned pieces of art in the world, Italian ideas and culture has touched many across the globe. From Augustus Caesar and Pliny to Galileo, Da Vinci and Federico Fellini, Italians have made their mark on all of us. The images of Roman and Italian architecture, like the Colosseum and the Leaning Tower of Pisa, are instantly recognized around the globe. The Mona Lisa is undoubtedly the most famous piece of art in the world, followed closely by the Statue of David and countless other Italian masterpieces. Italian fashion designers are still making an impact on runways everywhere. With Italy being divided into twenty different regions, each having a unique take on Italian food and culture, it’s a Herculean task to capture it all. So instead we’ve collected some of the more universal holidays and cultural aspects for your reading pleasure.

Greetings are enthusiastic yet rather formal. The usual handshake with direct eye contact and a smile suffices between strangers. Once a relationship develops, air-kissing on both cheeks, starting with the left is often added as well as a pat on the back between men. Wait until invited to move to a first name basis. Italians are guided by first impressions, so it is important that you demonstrate propriety and respect when greeting people, especially when meeting them for the first time. Many Italians use calling cards in social situations. These are slightly larger than traditional business cards and include the person's name, address, title or academic honors, and their telephone number. If you are staying in Italy for an extended period of time, it is a good idea to have calling cards made. Never give your business card in lieu of a calling card in a social situation.

Italy has long been the world center for romance and Italy is generally one of the most popular European honeymoon destinations. Want romance? Spoleto, Bellagio, and Todi are recommended by Frommer's. For historical sites we recommend the Coliseum, the Roman Forum, Pompeii, the Vatican Museums, and the Academy Galley art museum.
In this century it has seen the transformation of Italy from a greatly conventional, agricultural society to a progressive, developed state. There are many differences in people's daily lives in different places of Italy Rome , Milan , Venice , Sicily , and others. All of them joint make a exclusive portrait of the Italian existence. The capital of Italy the city of Rome today is a bustling place, full of traffic and crowds. It is amazing how sites of ancient culture and modern urban life coexist together in the modern country. People live alongside the temples, marketplaces and public buildings of the past.
The Italians were no slouches when it came to music; they invented both the piano and our system of musical notation, as well as producing Monteverdi, Vivaldi, Scarlatti, Verdi, Puccini, Bellini and Rossini.

As a newcomer, you will be welcomed and encouraged to enjoy Italy's hospitality. But as you get situated in your new job and life, the many local dialects and political perspectives may put you on edge at first. Here's our guide to savoring the Italian way of life. Language and Politics Italian dialects can be so different from region to region that native speakers often have a difficult time understanding each other. Still, try to learn as much Italian as possible. English may be understood and used in most major tourist destinations, but having a functional use of Italian will give you valuable insight into the culture. Similarly, the political spectrum is so broad that you will see every sort of extremism, with a range of moderate political parties in between. Don't be afraid to ask questions, but avoid interjecting your opinion about Italian politics unless you have thoroughly studied European history. Even then, proceed with caution.
