Home Study Abroad Italy The word Italy derives from the Homeric (Aeolic) word, which means "bull". Excavations throughout Italy have found proof of people in Italy dating back to the Paleolithic period (the "Old Stone Age") some 200,000 years ago. The first Greek settlers, who arrived in Italy from Euboea island the 8th century BC, possibly named their new land "land of bulls". Italy has influenced the cultural and social development of the whole Mediterranean area, deeply influencing European culture as well. As a result, it has also influenced other important cultures. Such cultures and civilizations have existed there since prehistoric times. After Magna Graecia, the Etruscan civilization and especially the Roman Republic and Empire that dominated this part of the world for many centuries, Italy was central to European science and art during the Renaissance. HISTORY
Italy is largely homogeneous linguistically and religiously but is diverse culturally, economically, and politically. Italy has the fifth-highest population density in Europeabout 200 persons per square kilometer (490/sq. mi.). Minority groups are small, the largest being the German-speaking people of Bolzano Province and the Slovenes around Trieste. Other groups comprise small communities of Albanian, Greek, Ladino, and French origin. Although Roman Catholicism is the majority religion99% of the people are nominally Catholicall religious faiths are provided equal freedom before the law by the constitution. Greeks settled in the southern tip of the Italian peninsula in the eighth and seventh centuries B.C.; Etruscans, Romans, and others inhabited the central and northern mainland. The peninsula subsequently was unified under the Roman Republic. The neighboring islands also came under Roman control by the third century B.C.; by the first century A.D., the Roman Empire effectively dominated the Mediterranean world. After the collapse of the Roman Empire in the West in the fifth century A.D., the peninsula and islands were subjected to a series of invasions, and political unity was lost. Italy became an oft-changing succession of small states, principalities, and kingdoms which fought among themselves and were subject to ambitions of foreign powers. Popes of Rome ruled central Italy; rivalries between the popes and the Holy Roman Emperors, who claimed Italy as their domain, often made the peninsula a battleground.

    Italy History Performing with passion
Italy has a passion for football to rival any country in the world and Italian football at its best is a carnival of noise, colour and, above all, style. English origins
The origins of modern football in Italy lie with English sailors and traders who brought the game to northern Italy in the late years of the 19th century. The Italian Football Association was founded in 1898 and became affiliated to FIFA in 1905. Five years later came Italy's first international match, a 6-2 victory against France in Milan. First trophy
The Italians took some time getting into their stride, yet by the 1930s were a force to be reckoned with. The formation of a full national league in 1929 was a key factor, together with the tactical innovations introduced by then Azzurri coach Vittorio Pozzo. Inspired by the defensive excellence of the Argentinian-born Luisito Monti and the goals of Angelo Schiavio and Giuseppe Meazza, Italy won the FIFA World Cup on home soil in 1934, beating Czechoslovakia 2-1 in the final in Rome. Successful defence
After defeating Austria 2-1 to take gold at the 1936 Olympics, Italy mounted a successful defence of the World Cup in the 1938 finals in France. Silvio Piola struck five goals in the tournament, including two in the Italians' 4-2 success against Hungary in the final.

    Italy History
During the middle ages Italian ties with "New Rome" of the East were threatened. In the 18th century changes began to break down traditional values. The new nation began to have troubles like: debt, few national resources, and almost no industry . That is something that you do not want to happen. Italy was plunged into a deep social political crisis by the war. Between 1945 and 1948 a new Italian nation emerged from the disasterof facism and war. During the Spanish war Italy gave tons of weapons. Italy finally entered world war 2 on June 1940. If you were wondering about what debt means this is the explanation here it is: Debt- the amount due by a customer in respect of goods supplied or serviced rendered by you! BACK
