Jump to: navigation search Jina Dharma is the way of life and the followers are Jains. Jina Dharma is nature of substance and there cannot be any founder for nature. Bhaghavaan Rishab Dev revived the principles of Jina Dharma being the first of the 24 Thrithankars - World Teachers. In modern India , Jain community is a minority , but it is growing in the United States, Western Europe, Africa, and other countries. Jina Dharma has influenced religion, ethics politics , and economics in India for more than 2000 years. Jina Dharma emphasizes the spiritual independence and equality of all life, and also non-violence. Self-control is a worldly expression and it is really canalising one's capability i.e., 'knowing and seeing' - Gynaatha Dhrishta - on one's own Self - Soul, is how Jains attained the true nature of the soul - liberation - Nirvaan or Moksha . Follwers of Jina Dharma believe that there were twenty-four Tirthankars , or World Teachers who are all knowing - Omniscient - and shared their knowledge. Jina Dharma lays emphasis on non-violence, truthfulness, vegetarianism, and the presence of a divine soul in every human.

Jainism
General Information Jainism is a religious faith of India that is usually said to have originated with Mahavira, a contemporary of the Buddha (6th century BC). Jains, however, count Mahavira as the last of 24 founders, or Tirthamkaras, the first being Rishabha. In 1990 the number of Jains worldwide was estimated at 3,650,000, almost all of whom live in India. Jainism has been present in India since Mahavira's time without interruption, and its influence has been significant. The major distinction within Jainism is between the Digambara and Svetambara sects, a schism that appears to date from about the 1st century AD. The major difference between them is that whereas the Svetambaras wear white clothes, the Digambaras traditionally go naked. Fundamentally, however, the views of both sects on ethics and philosophy are identical. The most notable feature of Jain ethics is its insistence on noninjury to all forms of life. Jain philosophy finds that every kind of thing has a soul; therefore strict observance of this precept of nonviolence (ahimsa) requires extreme caution in all activity. Jain monks frequently wear cloths over their mouths to avoid unwittingly killing anything by breathing it in, and Jain floors are kept meticulously clean to avert the danger of stepping on a living being. Jains regard the intentional taking of life, or even violent thoughts, however, as much more serious. Jain philosophy posits a gradation of beings, from those with five senses down to those with only one sense.

It was founded in roughly 600 BCE by Jnatriputra, who was later given the title Vardhamana Mahavira. (as well as the title Jina, conqueror, from which the name Jain is derived) Mahavira, like Buddha, was reputedly the son of a Prince, rejected the Vedas, and practiced extreme asceticism . III. JAINISM Jainism is an ancient faith rooted in the pre-Aryan Indus Civilization, concerned primarily with teaching ways and means of escaping the entanglements of the world. Jainism is a life-negating, somber, pessimistic faith. Scriptures: Agamas (precepts) or Siddhantas (treatises). Gods: Jainism denies a creator-god. However, human teachers, Tirthamkaras (ford-makers), are worshipped once they have reached liberation. They consider Mahavira the last of twenty-four Tirthamkaras, the first being Rishabha. Terms and Concepts: Jiva: Life-monads (units of life), infinite in number, eternally blessed and omniscient, principles of goodness. Ajiva: Non-living matter, obscuring and entangling jiva , principle of evil. Karma (literally "action"): material force binding an individual to the round of birth and rebirth as a result of any (even morally good in our sense) activity. Omniscience: Experiential understanding of the true inner nature of reality. This kind of knowledge is considered the key to "salvation." Nirvana: State of liberation where the evil influence of karma has been completely eliminated; the liberated soul's continued isolated existence on the motionless summit of the world.

Jainism, Jain religion India Jainism - The Monastic Path By about 500 B.C., some teachers had moved so far down the path of liberation that they no longer viewed the standard perception of life in the social world as valid for the dedicated spiritual devotee. They formed communities of religious renunciants ( shramanas ) who withdrew from the world and evolved a full-time monastic discipline. The most successful of these early communities, the Jains (or, in Sanskrit, Jaina) and the Buddhists, rejected the value of the Vedas and created independent textual traditions based on the words and examples of their early teachers, eventually evolving entirely new ways for interacting with the lay community.
    Jainism
The oldest continuous monastic tradition in India is Jainism, the path of the Jinas, or victors. This tradition is traced to Var-dhamana Mahavira (The Great Hero; ca. 599-527 B.C.), the twenty-fourth and last of the Tirthankaras (Sanskrit for fordmakers). According to legend, Mahavira was born to a ruling family in the town of Vaishali, located in the modern state of Bihar. At the age of thirty, he renounced his wealthy life and devoted himself to fasting and self-mortification in order to purify his consciousness and discover the meaning of existence. He never again dwelt in a house, owned property, or wore clothing of any sort. Following the example of the teacher Parshvanatha (ninth century B.C.), he attained enlightenment and spent the rest of his life meditating and teaching a dedicated group of disciples who formed a monastic order following rules he laid down. His life's work complete, he entered a final fast and deliberately died of starvation.

    THE JAINISM
The followers of this religion believe that its roots within India are even older than the Brahmanism (Hinduism) which they believe came with the people ( the Aryans ) migrating from other parts of the world (near the Caspian Sea ). The naked statues resembling the Jain monks amongst the remains of the Indus Valley Civilization, do substantiate some of the claims. However, there is no conclusive evidence that most of the concepts in Hinduism came from outside India. In fact, even the Aryan invasion theory has not yet been proven . In those days, people from other parts of the world came to India in a gradual manner. India offered milder climatic conditions and where, agriculture was better developed than several other places in the neighbouring countries. Gradually, these people adopted the life style prevalent in India and that is how, it is a country made up of different kinds of people and in real sense, it is a melting pot.
Jainism lays heavy emphasis on non-violence (ahimsa) and the believers of this religion, whether a monk or a householder, follow a very strict, well disciplined life. In fact, the householders are supposed to evolve to the monkhood in the later stages of life as was the case with the Hinduism in the Vedic era.
The first Tirthankar, Rishabhdev flourished prior to the Indus Valley Civilization and has been referred to as Lord Vishnu in the Puraanas. This name is also mentioned in the Vedas. This shows the inseparability of the two religions in the earlier times. His sons, Bharat and Bahubali (his 57 feet high statue at Shravanabelgo in Karnataka is quite famous) are well known in the Indian history.

Definition: Jainism is a religion of India founded by Mahavira around the same time the Buddhism was founded, during the 6th century BCE (although term Jain does not appear until the Common Era). Like Buddhism, Jainism was a reform movement which arose as a reaction against contemporary ideas of gods and in the direction of relegating gods to lesser importance. Thus, like Buddhism, Jainism argues that salvation must be achieved by the independent work of the person and without the help of any gods. Jainism does teach the existence of the soul, called jiva , which is by nature pure and seeks ultimate truth ( kaivalya ). Unfortunately, the karma which envelops the soul hinders this quest. Only a few Jains become monks, which requires a lot of work, but lay Jains still must follow several rules. The most important rule is non-injury, ahimsa . It is, in fact, an ideal ofr Jain monks to ritually starve themselves to death in an effort to harm absolutely nothing - no animals, no plants, and not even microbes.

    JAINISM
(By Pravin Shah of Raleigh, NC. Received in January-2001)
    Introduction:
Jainism is one of the oldest living religions of India. It predates recorded history as per references indicated in Hindu scriptures. It is an original system, quite distinct and independent from other systems of
Indian philosophy. Jainism is a religion of purely human origin and is preached and practiced by one who has attained perfect knowledge, omniscience and self-control by his own personal efforts and has been liberated from the bonds of worldly existence, the cycle of births and deaths. Such human beings are considered Gods of Jainism. The concept of God as a creator, protector, and destroyer of the universe does not exist in Jainism. Also the idea of God's reincarnation as a human being to destroy the demons is not accepted in Jainism. In summary Jainism does not believe in creator God, but it is not an atheistic religion because it believes in many Gods who are self realized individuals and who have attained liberation. In ancient times it was known by many names such as Saman tradition, or the religion of Nirgantha, or Jina.

    Principles of Jainism
    Introduction
Right conduct is to abstinence from (a) untruth (a-satya) (b) violence (ahimsa) and injury to living beings (c) theft (d) sex or lust (sangam) (e) greed (lobha) for worldly possessions. These are the five vows. Of these, violence is the most heinous. The highest virtue is the total renouncement of any thought or action which can hurt a living being. 'Ahimsa Paramo Dharmath', Non-Violence is the supreme religion - This Jain motto was adopted by Mahatma Gandhi in the modern age. In Jainism, there are five instruments of knowledge.
  • Mati jnana, perception through activity of sense organs, including the mind Sruta jnana, knowledge revealed by sculptures Avadhe jnana, clairvoyant perception Manapparyaya jnana, telepathic knowledge Kevala jnana, the temporal knowledge or omniscient
  • The understanding and acquisition of knowledge is attained by means of Pramana (Instruments of knowledge) and Naya ( point of view). The five 'pramanas' are those noted above and there are seven 'nayas', some refer to the substances, some to modifications, some arise out of nature of the subject and some out of verbal statements. The Jains carry their asceticism and their non-violence to extreme limits. A layman progresses in his spiritual upliftment if he observes seven more vows along with the five vows mentioned earlier. They are
