Nara, Heian Periods
Muromachi Period Azuchi-Momoyama Edo Period Meiji Period Militarism, WW2 Post War Buddhism Samurai Emperor After Yoritomo's death in 1199, quarrels for supremacy started between the Bakufu of Kamakura and the imperial court in Kyoto. Those quarrels for supremacy found an end in the Jokyu disturbance in 1221 when Kamakura defeated the Imperial army in Kyoto. The Hojo regents in Kamakura had achieved complete control over Japan. By redistributing the land gained during the Jokyu disturbance, they were able to achieve loyality among all the powerful people throughout the country. The emperor and some remaining governmental offices in Kyoto lost practically all effective power. Chinese influence continued during the Kamakura period. New Buddhist sects were introduced: the Zen sect (introduced 1191) found large numbers of followers among the samurai, now the leading social class. Another new Buddhist sect, the radical and intolerant Lotus Sutra sect was founded in 1253 by Nichiren.

JAPAN HISTORY
While geography is not destiny, the fact that Japan is located on islands on the outermost edge of Asia has had a profound influence on Japan's history. Just close enough to mainstream Asia, yet far enough to keep itself separate, much of Japanese history has been the alternation of periods of closure and openness. Until recently, Japan has been able to turn on or off its connection to the rest of the world, internalizing foreign cultural influences in fits and starts. It is comparable with the relationship between Britain and the rest of Europe, but with a much wider channel.
Shinto is the older animist religion of traditional Japan. At just over twelve hundred years in Japan, Buddhism is the more recent imported faith. These two religions have intertwined and influenced each other and Japanese culture. You can continue to find them side by side in cities, towns, and peoples lives.
The capital of the country has moved over the centuries from Nara to Kyoto and now Tokyo. Likewise, Japan has seen a range of political structures from periods of divinely endowed Imperial rule, feudal warring clans, the shogunate as military police state, a restored Imperial house, a one party democracy, and the current unsettled state of political affairs. One constant is the Imperial family, the oldest continuous royal family in the world.

JAPAN'S HISTORY
From: The Grolier Multimedia CD-ROM Encyclopedia
Grolier Electronic Publishing, Inc.
Modern knowledge about the first peoples to inhabit the Japanese archipelago has been pieced together from the findings of archaeologists and anthropologists and from the myths of ancient Japan. Although the date of the first human habitation is not known, anthropologists have identified one of the earliest cultures in Japan as the Jomon culture, which dates from about 8000 BC. A hunting and gathering culture, it used stone and bone tools and made pottery of distinctive design. In the 3d century BC, Jomon culture was disrupted by a new people, known as Yayoi, who probably emigrated from continental Asia. They introduced rice cultivation, primitive weaving, wheel-made pottery, domesticated horses and cows, and simple iron tools. Yayoi culture overlaid and fused with the earlier Jomon culture.
EARLY HISTORICAL PERIOD
The earliest written Japanese histories, the Kojiki (Record of Ancient Matters, 712) and the Nihon shoki (Chronicles of Japan, 720), include legends about the origins of the Japanese people and attribute the foundation of the state to a mythological emperor Jimmu in 660 BC. Another legend concerns the empress JINGO (AD c.169-269), who allegedly conquered Korea. These records provide more reliable chronicles of Japanese history from the 5th century.
Yamato Period
Beginning in the 3d or 4th century AD, a new culture appearedeither from within Yayoi society or from the Asian mainland. Its leaders left massive tombs with pottery, figurines, armor, jewelry, weapons, and other evidence that they were mounted warriors with long iron swords and bows. From this culture emerged rulers from the Yamato plain in the southern part of the main Japanese island of Honshu. They claimed descent from the sun-goddess, AMATERASU, and achieved political unityapparently in the mid-4th century. By placing Amaterasu at the head of the SHINTO deities the hereditary Yamato emperor reinforced his leadership position. Initially, the emperors ruled through alliances with other tribal chieftains, but the latter were gradually subordinated by a system of court ranking. This development was influenced by Chinese concepts of statecraft, learned through Japan's military endeavors in Korea. Japan also adopted Chinese script, and Buddhism was introduced from Korea about 538.

It is bounded on the north by the Sea of Okhotsk, on the east by the Pacific Ocean, on the south by the Pacific Ocean and the East China Sea, and on the west by the Korea Strait and the Sea of Japan. In Japanese the country's name is Dai (“great”) Nihon or Nippon (“origin of the sun”), hence, Land of the Rising Sun. The Japanese islands extend in an irregular crescent from the island of Sakhalin (Russia) to the island of Formosa, or Taiwan (Republic of China). Japan proper consists of the large islands of Hokkaido, the northernmost; Honshu, the largest, called the mainland; Shikoku; and Kyushu, the southernmost. The combined area of these islands is about 362,000 sq km (about 140,000 sq mi). The total area of Japan is 377,727 sq km (145,841 sq mi). Tokyo is Japan's capital and largest city.
Land and Resources
Topographically, Japan is a rugged land of high mountains and deep valleys, with many small plains. Because of the alternating sequence of mountain and valley, and the rocky soil, only an estimated 11 percent of Japan is arable land.

Archaeological research indicates that Japan had already been occupied by early humans at least 600,000 years ago, during the Lower Paleolithic period. Over repeated ice ages during the last million years, Japan was regularly connected by land bridges to the Asian mainland (by Sakhalin to the North, and probably Kyushu to the South), facilitating migrations of humans, animals and plants to the Japanese archipelago from the area that is now China and Korea. The Japanese Paleolithic produced the earliest known polished stone tools, around 30,000 BC. With the end of the Wisconsin glaciation (last ice age) and general warming period, the Jomon culture emerged around 11,000 BC, characterized by a Mesolithic to Neolithic semi-sedentary hunter-gatherer lifestyle and the manufacture of the earliest known pottery in the world. It is thought that Jomon populations were the ancestors of the Proto-Japanese and today's Ainu. The start of the Yayoi period around 300 BC marked the influx of new technologies such as rice farming, irrigation and iron and bronze-making, brought by migrants from Korea, China and other parts of Asia.

History of Japan
10,000 years ago people crossed a land bridge to get to Japan. Over the next 1,000 years the earth warmed and the land bridge was covered with water. Then, Japan was isolated from the rest of the world. The people on the island fished and grew rice. Japanese were used to being isolated and were suspicious of foreigners. When it opened it's border's in 1868, Japan noticed that every other nation was so advanced. Then, they wanted to compete.
The first Japanese were called Ainu. They live on the island of Hokkadio. Ainu fish and grow rice, the main crop. The old traditions are mixing with the new Japanese traditions.
In the early 1900s another world war started. It was called Wold War II(WWII). Hitler was growing in power. He wanted to kill every Jew and his plan was called the Holocaust. USA came in the war because Japan dropped a bomb in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Italy was first to surrender. When Germany surrendered, Hitler committed sucide. Japan was still fighting. After Harry S. Truman dropped two atom bombs, Japan surrendered. It took a long time for Japan to rebuild.

HISTORY
Recent discoveries posit the mergence of the hunting and gathering society known as Jomon around 14,500 BC. Jomon pottery is among the world's oldest and includes vessels and figurines, particularly of women. Mounds of shells and other evidence indicate that the diet included fish, shellfish, deer, wild pigs, and wild plants and seeds. In the Kanto Plain (near Tokyo), the Jomon culture in its later stages included village-like groupings. By the late 6th century, tribes that had migrated to fertile lands of Yamato were engaged in a power struggle over the introduction of Buddhism. Prince Shotoku, appointed regent by Empress Suiko in 593, helped seal victory for the pro-Buddhist camp. The temple Horyu-ji was completed in 607.
