Tokyo
Tokyo is where most journeys to Japan start. Tokyo's attractions result from a mix of important cultural, historic, and societal trends. We can safely say that Tokyo is unlike any other big city in the world. It is a fabulous place to visit, but you may need a vacation from the city (if not its prices) after a few days.
Nikko
A solemn pilgrimage site for many Japanese, the shrine complex at Nikko is, also, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The area is closely associated with the history of the Tokugawa Shoguns. The surrounding National Park is stunning.
Kamakura
One of Japan's best collections of shrines, temples, and monuments. In addition, the town is famous for its Great Buddha statue.
Kyoto
Kyoto is Japan's second most popular tourist destination. Its fame results from a several well preserved historical sites (over 15 have been classified UNESCO World Heritages sites). Kyoto was Japan's capital and the emperor's residence through part of the First and most of the Second Millennia ( it is called "The Thousand Year Capital") and is the source of many aspects of the Japanese culture as we know it today. Kyoto, undamaged in World War II, contains the best-preserved examples of Japan's feudal history. If you are a temple aficionado, plan to spend several days in Kyoto. The town has many attractions and is a pleasant place to visit.
Osaka
Osaka is another of Japan's vibrant "big" cities: it combines its history and modern economy in a manner that is certain to please.

Bushido's legacy
September 8th,1868 marked the end of the feudal period in Japan and the beginning of the modern Meiji era. A wave of modernization and westernization swept across the country eroding the foundations of feudalism and ushering in new institutions and ideals. This was an important turning point in the history of Japan as a new government was adopted, new laws instituted, compulsory education was introduced, and a national military was established. However, the Meiji era also saw the demise of the long reigning samurai warrior and his legendary code of bushido. The following will examine how the values which epitomized the medieval ideology of bushido have translated into modern Japanese society.
With the installation of the new Meiji government came the dissolution of the feudal class system, which was replaced by a more democratic social policy. The Five Charter Oath of 1868 included regulations designed to develop western democratic methods of governance through: “the establishment of deliberative assemblies, involvement of all classes in carrying out state affairs, freedom of social and occupational mobility, replacement of "evil customs" with the "just laws of nature", and an international search for knowledge to strengthen the foundations of imperial rule.”

new LiveClock('arial,1,black,invisible,,,200,0,1,0,3,7'); Japan History
Japan, sixth city of the World, the Paris of the East! and the New York of the West!
Japan, the most cosmopolitan city in the world, the fishing village on a mudflat which almost literally overnight became a great metropolis.
Inevitable meeting place of world travelers, the habitat of people of forty-eight different nationalities, of the Orient yet Occidental, the city of glamorous night life and throbbing with activity, Japan offers the full composite allurement of the Far East.
Not a wilderness of temples and chop-sticks, of jade and pajamas, Japan in reality is an immense and modern city of well-paved streets, skyscrapers, luxurious hotels and clubs, trams, buses and motors, and much electricity.
Less than a century ago Japan was little more than an anchorage for junks, with a few villages scattered along the low, muddy banks of the river. What it will be a hundred years from now is a test for the imagination. Principal gateway to Japan, serving a hinterland population of more than 200,000,000, many close observers believe it will become the largest city in the world.
Early History. Although neighbouring cities like Nanking, Soochow, and Hangchow figure spaciously in the chronicles of ancient Japan, Japan is very rarely mentioned. It undoubtedly formed part of the Kingdom of Wu (B.C. 513), a great feudal state that embraced the modern province of Kiangsu, in which Japan is situated, but the connection is not recorded. The earliest reference to what is now Japan is placed at approximately B.C. 200, when it was called "liu-tuh" and known as a fishing station. From that remote date until A.D. 1280, when it acquired the name of Japan ("Above the Sea"), there is a marked hiatus in the historical record.

The United States is already at war with Iraq
created by e-hadj idea ) by e-hadj (1.1 y) print C! s I like it! Fri Feb 28 2003 at 3:16:15 The Gulf War "ended" when offensive operations were suspended at midnight, February 28, 1991. But did this end the war? There is a critical, unexamined assumption in both The United States should go to war with Iraq and The United States should not go to war with Iraq write-ups, namely, that the current situation in Iraq can correctly be called "peace". This has it exactly backwards the United States is already at war with Iraq. The rant I want to have today is, the choice before the U.S. and indeed the rest of the international community is not whether to go to war in Iraq. We are already at war . The choice is between a) continuing the war, but changing tactics from siege to invasion , b) continuing the war under essentially the same tactics, or c) abandoning the war and accepting the status quo ante bellum
Are We Not Already At War With Iraq?
Nowadays, war is rarely declared formally. However, the phrase "

Shingon (§ÂœÂŸ¨Â¨Â€) is a major school of Japanese Buddhism , and the most important school of Vajrayana Buddhism outside of the Himalayan region. Shingon Kukai went to China in 804 where he studied the tantra and returned armed with many texts and art works, and developed his own synthesis of esoteric practice and doctrine, centred on the universal Buddha Vairocana (or, more accurately, Mahavairocana Tathagata). One feature that sets Shingon apart from the other surviving schools of esoteric Buddhism in Tibet is the use of calligraphy, along with more common pictorial representations, to represent Buddha figures in their mandalas http://www.lastring.com/articles/Shingon
