Japanese Communication Style
Japanese communication patterns, like most Asians, can be baffling to Westerners. Americans are used to straight talk. Great effort is made to convey the exact intent of the speaker. Japanese tend to use words as only part of the message. Other factors, such as silence, subtle body language, mood, tone, and intuition imply meaning.communication styles. Click each topic for more information.
About silence
Sincerity Truth is relative Saving face ... Other tips About silence The Japanese tend to be suspicious of words; they are more concerned with actions. They believe in using silence as a way of communicating. They also believe it is better to talk too little than too much. Japanese take special note of the pauses between words. They are comfortable with less talk and longer periods of silence than are Westerners. Japanese may even use the fact that silence disturbs Westerners as a strategy to unnerve them. If the silent person is the highest ranked Japanese executive at the meeting, it can be a good sign. Or, it might mean he does not want to say something unpleasant. Sincerity Truth is relative The Japanese believe truth is dependent upon circumstances and obligations to other people. Nothing should be allowed to disrupt the surface harmony of the individual, therefore, the Japanese will often give an answer they believe will please the listener.

I find that the Japanese, myself included, use the phrase, "Japan is the world's second largest GDP" as some sort of mantra to try to keep Japan relevant in a world that is exceedingly uninterested in Japan. I was talking to Oki Matsumoto, a good friend and the CEO of Monex about this. He told me about a talk he gave at Keio University about the increasing irrelevance of Japan and showed me the following slides which I post with permission.
This first slide is the percentage of the world GDP of various countries in 2004 and projected in 2050. On the far left is the US at 38.3% in 2004 and a diminished but significant 20.3% in 2050. Japan however goes from 15.4% in 2004 to 4% in 2050. Still 2X that of Italy's projection, but not the mammoth we seem to think will will continue to be. The first yellow block is China and the second one is India. Clearly they are the big growth markets according to the predictions. You may say, well that's 2050. That's a long time from now.

    Japanese Culture
Location - Japan is located on an island off the coast of North Korea and is in the continent of Asia. Daily Life History - Japan has been inhabited for about 100,000 years. It is possible to trace individual emperors back generation by generation. In official histories of the nation the reigns of emperors serve as points of reference since the number of years for which each emperor reigned is known it is possible to indicate the year as in the West, but nobody does this. Very few ordinary people know the names of all the successive emperors. Time is referred to, in various episodes, as the name given to the emperors reign. Throughout the years the Japanese have used the model of the Chinese to help them develop many aspects of their culture. Some of things they have used are the style of writing, the set up of government and the state system and the set up of their economic system. Even though that has happened they are still two very different cultures.
