The Japanese language is very different from English and most other European languages . Like Finnish Turkish , and Korean , Japanese is an agglutinating language, with two (phonologically distinctive) tones like Serbian/Croatian and Swedish . It is a language where sentences need no subject and adjectives can have past tenses. The most useful approach to Japanese study is to consider that the Japanese language has its own internal logic, its own way of communicating, and not compare it with your own language, but accept and learn it on its own terms.

Home Travel Tokyo Travel Guide Culture ... Anime Japanese Language Back Home Up Next Max Results Most Accurate Japanese language - spoken and written language used mainly in Japan The Japanese language (Nihongo ) is a spoken and written language used mainly in Japan.
Overview
Although Japanese is spoken almost exclusively in Japan, it has been and is still sometimes spoken in countries besides Japan. When Japan occupied Korea, Taiwan and parts of China, locals in those countries were forced to learn Japanese and were each given a Japanese name. As a result, there are still many people in these countries who speak Japanese instead of or as well as the local languages. In addition, immigrants from Japan, the majority of whom are found in the United States (notably California and Hawaii), and Brazil also frequently speak Japanese. Their descendants (known as "nisei" or second generation), however, rarely speak Japanese fluently. Japanese is the official language of Japan and of no other country. Because it is Japan's only official language and there are few foreign Japanese speakers, the language is heavily tied to Japanese culture and vice-versa. There are many Japanese words describing certain Japanese cultural ideas, traditions, and customs (e.g., Wa, Nemawashi, Kaizen, Kamikaze), which do not have corresponding words in other languages. Understanding the Japanese language requires knowledge of Japanese society.

In the 16th century, St. Francis Xavier reported to Rome that the Japanese language had been devised by the Devil to prevent the spread of Christianity in Japan. Many who have attempted to crack the Japanese market and learn Japanese might agree with
St. Francis!
The Japanese language is said to be one of the most difficult languages to learn. Actually, many Japanese seem to delight in the fact that only a few foreigners have mastered the language, thus giving credence to the popular "myth" that Japan is unique and therefore only the Japanese can master Japanese.
Objectively..

Japanese is not a terribly difficult language in terms of the grammar or pronunciation, to a point. For those students of European languages who have suffered through complicated verb conjugations, numerous tenses, and feminine and masculine words, Japanese will be a breath of fresh air.
A word of caution ... In general, Japanese does not use heavy accents on different syllables of words. For example, think of how most Americans pronounce the following words - bold indicates placement of accent:

Photo Gallery Japanese (Nihongo) is a language spoken by over 127 million people, mainly in Japan, but also by Japanese emigrant communities around the world. It is considered an agglutinative language and is distinguished by a complex system of honorifics reflecting the hierarchical nature of Japanese society, with verb forms and particular vocabulary which indicate the relative status of speaker and listener. The sound inventory of Japanese is relatively small, and it has a lexically-distinctive pitch accent system.
Japanese vocabulary has been heavily influenced by Chinese over a period of at least 1,500 years. Japanese is written with a mix of Chinese characters (kanji) and a modified syllabary, kana, also originally based on Chinese characters. Much vocabulary has been imported from Chinese, or created on Chinese models.

Writing system
Before the 5th century, the Japanese had no writing system of their own. They began to adopt the Chinese writing script along with many other aspects of Chinese culture after their introduction by Korean monks and scholars during the 5th and 6th centuries AD.

Viewing Japanese Text
Many of the links in the Bristol Japan Club web site are to sites written in Japanese. If you are using a computer with an English language operating system (without Japanese language support) you will be able to view the text displayed in a graphical format but not the ordinary text which will appear as meaningless symbols. Of course, if you haven't mastered kana (the Japanese phonetic script) and kanji (the Chinese characters used in Japanese), the Japanese characters will be meaningless symbols anyway but that's another story... Microsoft Global IME (for older versions of Windows)
The Japanese Input Method Editor for Windows 95, 98 and Me , together with the necessary Japanese Language Support, can be downloaded free from the Microsoft Internet Explorer web site. There are also free downloads for other Asian languages. This will enable later versions of Internet Explorer to handle Japanese characters so that you can read all the text properly on Japanese web sites. You may need to download the latest version of Internet Explorer (also free) before you start. The Japanese IME software will also allow you to send and receive e-mail in Japanese in Outlook and Outlook Express and to type in Japanese in Microsoft Word 2000 or later.
