    Question #67986. author asks:
Are Japanese and Korean related languages?
    zbeckabee
Many consider Korean a language isolate. Others believe that Japanese and Korean may be related; still others believe this is not so, and any similarities are simply due to a sprachbund effect – see here for morphological features shared among languages of the East Asian sprachbund. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_language Jul 08 06, 8:59 PM What-A-Mess Actually..... Most Koreans can read Chinese. Korean is a lnguage that is, like Japanese, derived from Chinese. The Koreans borrowed a huge number of Chinese words, gave Korean readings and/or meanings to some of the Chinese characters and also invented about 150 new characters, most of which are rare or used mainly for personal or place names.

The game was created in China over 2000 years ago confirmed with the discovery of a 2000 year old porcelain board. It is mentioned in the Analects of Confucius (c Third century BC) and some legends say it may have been invented by a Chinese Emperor Yao (2337-2258 BC) to teach patience, and battle strategy to his son. The game spread to other parts of Asia, and has been known by many names including Weiqi in China, Baduk in Korea, and Igo or Go in Japan. It is often spelled with a capital, or spelled Goe to distinguish it from the English verb. It was said to have been played by aristocrats, and warlords, while chess was seen as a game for the common people. The game was not commonly played in the West until the second half of the 20th century. It's popularity continues to spread. 1 Comment Add a Comment 8:05 AM Mohir Go is to Western chess what philosophy is to double entry accounting.

    About Steve Battisti
    Expertise
I`m always willing to give help, or at least my opinions on things related to Japan. I think I`m especially strong at helping out non-native Japanese speakers with the language. Also, helping others understand the culture, such as U.S. businessmen who have to do business with Japanese. I`m not doing translations right now, unless it`s just a phrase or a word. More of a language and general Japanese culture guy than a travel/history expert.
    Experience
10+ years of studying Japan and Japanese language. I lived there for 5 years, one as a student, four as a businessman. Most importantly, I lived there because I wanted to live there, not because someone sent me there! Education/Credentials BA in Japanese You are here: Experts Food/Drink Japanese Cuisine Japan

PDA View Full Version : Rabbits live on the Moon where they make mochi RAV TUX September 14th, 2007, 12:08 PM I read this about 6 months ago and was very happy to know that not only is the moon made of cheese but Rabbits live on the moon where they make mochi:
The Moon rabbit, also called the Jade Rabbit , is a rabbit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbit) that lives on the moon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon) in East Asian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Asian) folklore (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folklore). The legends about the moon rabbit are based on the traditional pareidolia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareidolia) that identifies the markings (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunar_mare) of the moon as a rabbit pounding in a mortar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usu). In Chinese (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China) folklore, it is often portrayed as a companion of the moon goddess Chang'e (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chang%27e_%28mythology%29), constantly pounding the elixir of life (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elixir_of_life) for her; but in Japanese (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan) versions it is just pounding mochi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mochi_%28food%29).http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon_rabbit
