Holy Water from Jordan River Fragrant Anointing Oil ~ Jerusalem Blessing Then the people of Jerusalem and all Judea were going out to him, and all the region along the Jordan, and they were baptize by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. (Matthew 3:5-6) Jordan River - the major river in ancient Israel, from its main source at Banias in the foothill of Mount Hermon, the Jordan River runs south in a great crack in the earth's surface where two tectonic plates meet. (Yarden - in Hebrew - from the verb root Yarod - to descend).
The Jordan is clear, and in some places reaches a width of over twenty yards and a depth of nearly seventeen feet and is more than thirteen miles in length; a bridge, which connects Damascus with Galilee, crosses it.
Jordan River also gets its source of water from the Sea of Galilee (Kineret) a fresh water lake 700-ft. below sea level. It is bordered with trees and shrubs. Tamarisk, rhododendron, Angus Castus, Apple of Sodom. Its waters contain twenty-two species of various fish; Capocta, Barbus Canis, Cyprinodon, Silurus. Fishing has always been essential to the local economy. Varieties of birds are found in the neighboring thickets and wild animals, Vipers, scorpions, porcupines, jackals, wild boars, ibexes, and panthers. The area temperature is tropical.

Many local concertgoers have heard a performance in Jordan Hall at New England Conservatory at one time or another, and know that the hall is an acoustic marvel. But probably few are familiar with the hall's history, or know why it inspires such devotion among musical cognoscenti that Yo-Yo Ma has said, "I love Jordan Hall so much... for the unbelievable acoustics. And for its warmth and intimacy. But most of all for the sense of event when you go there." It is perhaps exactly this blend of the small and the grand scale that makes Jordan Hall at NEC so unique, and gives it both a local following and an international reputation. Opened in 1903, Jordan Hall was the gift of New England Conservatory trustee Eben D. Jordan the 2nd, a member of the family that founded the Jordan Marsh retail stores and himself an amateur musician. In 1901, Jordan donated land for NEC's Main Building, while also offering to fund a concert hall with a gift of $120,000. Wheelwright's design is what gives Jordan Hall its unique horseshoe shape, in which 1,019 seats are arranged to have clear sightlines to the stage. The floor is steeply graduated for maximum view, and the balcony has no obstructing supports. The shape and arrangement of seats give the hall its fine acoustical properties. Other distinctive features include the golden oak-colored finish of the interior and the great organ, also in oak with a gilt finish, and modeled on another Renaissance design: that of the organ in the Santa Maria Scala in Siena.

BARBARA JORDAN'S MYRIAD ACCOMPLISHMENTS, the most memorable was her election to the Texas Legislature in 1966, a victory which made her the first African American and only woman to serve in the State Senate during her first term. In 1972 she was elected to the United States House of Representatives, where she served until 1979. From 1979 until her untimely death in 1996, Jordan served as a professor at the LBJ School of Public Affairs. The highlights of her legislative career include her landmark speech during Richard Nixon's impeachment hearings; her appearance as the first black woman to make a keynote address to the Democratic National Convention; and her successful efforts in 1975 to expand the Voting Rights Act to include language minorities under the law. The list of accolades bestowed on Barbara Jordan is rich and varied. She was recently named Role Model of the Century by Texas Monthly magazine (December 1999). Jordan was born February 21, 1936, one of three daughters of a poor preacher in Houston. She attended public schools and graduated from Texas Southern University, where she majored in political science, and received her law degree in 1959 from Boston University. BRIEF HISTORY of the Jordan Company The Jordan Company was founded in Memphis, TN as a wholesale and retail lumber and millwork business. The original business location was on the current site of the Peabody Hotel. ( 149 Union Avenue) As business grew, Jordan added a second operating location in Memphis (815 Vance Street). The original business moved from the Peabody site to Florida Street. The business direction moved more towards retail with an emphasis of selling lumber and millwork to the general public. Retail business expanded with a second Memphis location on Lamar Avenue. A third Memphis operation was added in the Frayser area. Jordan made a strategic business decision to exit the retail lumber and millwork business and subsequently sold those locations to Hyman Builders Supply of Memphis, TN. Jordan entered the manufacturing phase of their business history. Initial manufactured products included aluminum windows, storm doors, and wood door units. The new operation was moved to Jordan’s current headquarters on Burbank Road in Memphis. The Jordan family entered into an agreement to sell their business to Orgill Brothers Hardware of Memphis, TN.

The History of Jordan
Turkish rule in Jordan lasted until the beginning of the twentieth century. After the First World War, the major western powers dismembered the old Ottoman Empire to distribute the territories within themselves. During this move, the region lying in the east of the Jordan Rriver called Transjordania fell into the hands of Britain. Consequently, along with Palestine, Jordan came under the League of Nations controlled by the Britain. In 1946, Jordan attained complete independence under the present constitution. Tracing the rulers of the land, King Abdullah ibn Hussein of the Arabian Hashemite Dynasty held the position of Emir since 1920s. Following his assassination in 1951, the throne was ascended by his son Hussein ibn Talal until early 1999. After independence, Jordan’s history and politics were predominantly determined by the issue of Palestine and the relations with Israel. During the Israel – Palestine war in 1952, Jordanian army was backed by the forces from neighbouring Arab countries and could occupy 6000 sq. km. of Palestine adjacent to the River Jordan. In 1990, Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait causing major problems to the Jordanians. The Gulf war of 1991 brought wide spread political and economic disaster to Jordan prominently pronounced by the UN sanctions imposed on Baghdad. King Hussein died in 1999 leaving the throne to Prince Abdullah. The economic reforms brought by King Hussein and Abdullah helped the country manage the inflation successfully. The progress of history during the past has left the country with a strong anti-American feeling due to the Bush administration’s support for Israel and the proposed assault on Arabs. Jordan is also deeply concerned about the economic consequences of a possible Gulf War. Jordan’s membership with the Council of Arab Economic Co-operation, the Arab Monetary Fund and World Trade Organization are significant in accounting for its welfare and productivity.

The part of the Holy Land on the eastern side of the Jordan River, in the country of Jordan, is blessed with the rich spiritual heritage of the full story of Salvation as recorded in the Bible. The Biblical history of Abraham, Job, Moses, Ruth, Elijah, John the Baptist, Jesus Christ, Paul and other leading figures from the Bible is found etched in the ancient landscape now within the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. In and around southern Jordan, God first manifested Himself to mankind. Subsequently, this land witnessed the missions of numerous prophets, the completion of the Covenant through Moses and the Israelites, the increased revelation of the Christian faith heralded by John the Baptist and completed through Jesus Christ. Jordan is also where Jacob wrestled with the angel of God, Job suffered and was rewarded for his faith, and Elijah ascended to Heaven. The very name of the country and its famous river of baptism and spiritual commitment - Jordan retains the unique heritage of the land. The heartland of this spiritual landscape that witnessed the unfolding of God's Salvation History is the area alongside the Dead Sea and the Jordan River, in today's west-central Jordan. This area was called the "Plains of Moab" in the Old Testament and formed part of the region of "Peraea" in the New Testament. This is the only area in the Holy Land that combines the traditions of Moses, Elijah, John the Baptist, and Jesus Christ, key figures in God's redemption of mankind.

HISTORY
The land that became Jordan is part of the richly historical Fertile Crescent region. Its history began around 2000 B.C., when Semitic Amorites settled around the Jordan River in the area called Canaan. Subsequent invaders and settlers included Hittites, Egyptians, Israelites, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Arab Muslims, Christian Crusaders, Mameluks, Ottoman Turks, and, finally, the British. In 1950, the country was renamed the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to include those portions of Palestine annexed by King Abdullah. Jordan established three governorates on the West Bank: Nablus, al-Quds (Jerusalem), and al-Khalil. While recognizing Jordanian administration over the West Bank, the United States maintained the position that ultimate sovereignty was subject to future agreement. Jordan signed a mutual defense pact in May 1967 with Egypt, and it participated in the June 1967 war between Israel and the Arab states of Syria, Egypt, and Iraq. After repelling the Arab attack, Israel extended its control to the Jordan River, including Jordanian-controlled eastern Jerusalem. In 1988, Jordan renounced all claims to the West Bank but retained an administrative role pending a final settlement on the West Bank. The U.S. Government considers the West Bank to be territory occupied by Israel and believes that its final status should be determined through direct negotiations among the parties concerned on the basis of UN Security Council Resolutions 242 and 338.

From the Moabs, Kanaans, Egyptians and through the Nabateans, Romans, Byzantines, till the Moslems, Memluks and Ottomans and finally the British, Jordan experiences dozens of prosperous civilizations and strong rulers. Several prophets, mentioned in the Bible and the Quran, lived here, among them: Noah, Lotus, Moses, Shuaib, Elias, Jadur and Jesus Christ. The Osmans captured Jordan in year 1517. Corruption, discrimination and suppression grew up the anti-Osman feelings and the pan-arab nationalists won support from the people. The Sykes-Picot agreement was signed 1916 between Britain and France dividing the eastern Arab states among them. Britain to become Transjordan, Palestine and Iraq. France gets Syria and Lebanon. The Great Arab Revolution , under the leadership of Sherif Hussein of Mecca, broke up 1916 against the Osmans. Britain supported the uprising in order to end the Turkish control over this area and especially Palestine. The revolution succeeded and deprived the Osmans of their powers in the region. The Arab troops controlled 1918 Jordan, Damascus and most of the Arab Peninsula. Hussein 's goal was an independent unified state from Aleppo (Syria) till Aden (Yemen). Britain soon didn't stay to its promises and went further with its secret plans dividing the Arab countries and colonizing them.

"Why J" ? you might ask. "Why not A or M or R ?"
A few places and people's names comes to mind..so lets go.
I gotta start somewhere !
Jaffa ...more than 4000 years old, and I have already walked about 4000 kms. in and around the fleamarkets where many stores sell "just everything" and often the owners sit at the entrance (and some are asleep,) and walked at the Port and the parks and the promenades and the narrow streets and by the landmark Clocktower, and into a Morroccan restaurant where about 50 older men seated at small tables (for 4), are playing cards and talking and keeping score in a cloud of smoke from the many items being smoked, while the television blares music and songs...and bakeries and antique shops and fancy new boutiques and clothing stores and hairdressers and more, and more.
And I will return again and again in every season.

This is the email I received from the John Edwards campaign tonight:
Tonight, President Bush is expected to adopt the McCain Doctrine and announce his plan to send up to 20,000 more troops to Iraq. That is a grave mistake.
The president's decision is wrong for Iraq and wrong for America and it's time for the new Congress to stop Bush from stubbornly pursuing his failed strategy in Iraq.
Congress should make it clear to the president that he will not get any money to put more of our troops in harm's way until he provides a plan to turn responsibility of Iraq over to the Iraqi people and to ultimately leave Iraq.
Click here to sign a petition calling on Congress to block funding for Bush's escalation of the war in Iraq. (http://johnedwards.com/r/5020/786166)

Water Scarcity and the Future of "Greater" Israel
by Tefel Hall
tefelhall@msn.com (April 21 2003)
For thirty-five years, Israel has thwarted the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. Ostensibly, Israel claims that such a state would be a threat to its own security: it insists that it needs a buffer zone between itself and its hostile neighbors, and it claims that the Palestinians cannot be trusted with independence. These claims are of doubtful validity. A more plausible explanation for Israel's intransigence is that a Palestinian state would expose the hypocrisy of Israel's unfair water policies.
In the early 1950s, Israel began siphoning off water from the Jordan River and the Lake of Galilee. The amount of water it takes from these sources is considerable. Driven by the Zionist of ideal of "making the desert bloom", the Israelis aggressively built a National Water Carrier - a network of pipes and canals - that brought water from the highlands of Galilee to the Negev desert and the coastal plain (Deconinck).
Largely as a result of this construction, the water level of the lower Jordan dwindled to a trickle. Today, the amount of water that empties into the Dead Sea is only one-eighth the amount that emptied into the sea fifty years ago (Barlow). Furthermore, the water of the lower Jordan has become excessively saline, threatening the environment ("The Jordan River Basin").

Palestinian refugees in Jordan
Historical background
1948 war
When the United Nations General Assembly ( UNGA ) passed Resolution 181, known as the Partition Plan, in November 1947, aimed at creating a larger Jewish state to accommodate the Jewish minority at the expense of two-thirds of the Palestinian population, conflict in Palestine spread. However, the Zionist-Jewish paramilitary organizations, mainly the Haganah, were far more prepared and equipped than the Palestinians and were able to declare the establishment of the Jewish State on 15 May 1948. In September 1948, the Arab League Council approved the creation of a Palestine government and adopted a resolution to that effect. In that meeting all the Arab governments voted in favour of a Palestinian government except Transjordan (Tannous 1988: 659) . In order to legalize the annexation of the West Bank to Transjordan, King Abdullah called for a conference to be held on 1 December 1948 in Jericho. The meeting included Palestinian deputies appointed by the king to speak on his behalf and therefore "those who attended the conference could not be called the representatives of the people of Palestine by any standard of national electoral representation" (Tannous 1988: 665) As a result of the conference, a resolution was adopted according King Abdullah sovereignty over Palestine, but which also "urged the return of all the Palestinian refugees to their homes and properties and to receive compensation for all losses sustained"
