Journals will be kept by all students in sixth grade reading. These journals will be used to respond to in class readings and provide a way to communicate with the teacher.
A composition book will be used for journal writing. Every time a question is given in class, the page being used will be folded in half from top to bottom. The student response will be written on the left side, which leaves room for the teacher to respond on the right side.
Journals will be collected and read about once a month, sometimes more often depending on the amount of entries.
Each student has a rubric attached to the inside of his or her journal that explains how the entries are graded.

by Michael Gori Through reading the Journal entries from Lance's trip with "The Song of The Whale, students will gain a better understanding of good journal writing. It is important to explain to the students that there really are two types of journals - personal and "public," yet each serves to describe the writers feelings and experiences about a given event. Lance's journal would of course, be considered "public." This lesson will contain large group instruction and discussion; cooperative learning group-work and individual work. Time: 2 lesson periods
Objectives:
  • Students will gain a better understanding of journal writing. Students will learn what how description and narration make journals more interesting and informative. Students will write a journal entry about an experience they have had which they would like to share with others. This objective may be modified by the instructor.
  • The Lesson:
Day 1 Read the first day of Lance's Journal with the class. Have students identify elements of the entry which they found interesting. Make sure students identify descriptive and narrative elements of the entry.
    Definition:
Descriptive element: a section of text which describes an event, person or place.

    Journal Writing
Journal writing is known to be beneficial on a practical and therapeutic level. We think so highly of journal writing, we built our entire company around it! Keeping a journal is beneficial for a few reasons. First, it gives you a stitch in time every day to collect your thoughts, contemplate situations and reflect on life. Second, journal writing allows you to jot down experiences before they fade with time. Third, journal writing is a great way to promote writing skills, particularly for kids. With the advent of modern technology, writing skills in general have dropped to horrific levels. For all of these reasons, journal writing is definitely something worth pursuing for people of all ages.

    Journal Writing Tips
What Should I Write in My Journal?
Here are a few of the ingredients of keeping a great journal borrowed from Reflection: Getting Learning Out of Serving
    • Journals should be snapshots filled with sights, sounds, smells, concerns, insights, doubts, fears, and critical questions about issues, people, and, most importantly, yourself. Honesty is the most important ingredient to successful journals. A journal is not a work log of tasks, events, times and dates. Write freely. Grammar/spelling should not be stressed in your writing until the final draft. Write an entry after each visit . If you can't write a full entry, jot down random thoughts, images, etc. which you can come back to a day or two later and expand into a colorful verbal picture.

Homestays Language Summer Camps About Us After School Study: Guided Lessons Self Study/Silent Reading Journal Writing Language Learning Through Play Journal Writing Journal writing is an essential part of our program. It helps students develop writing skills and gives us a chance to provide a lot of one-on-one feedback to the students. The journals also serve to help keep their memories of the summer camp or homestay for the future. Journals are written 5 nights a week during summer camp and 4 nights a week during the regular school season. In the beginning, we encourage students to write about their day to help give them practice talking about daily activities. But as they become accomplished at that, we make them choose a topic and do some more focused writing. Typically, journal entries will be about 200 words long. The students will write a rough draft in their rough draft workbook and then I will edit the rough draft and suggest corrections and provide grammar tips. The students then write a good copy of their journal into their actual journal, which is a work of art in itself.

    Journal Writing...
There are many reasons that people keep journals or diaries. Maybe you have tried this when you are dieting. Keeping the information you need in a book can help you see patterns. Writing something about your feelings, events and experiences can help you gain insight. When anyone is trying to make a significant change in their life, they need to have an idea of where they are, where they want to go and how they want to get there. The more understanding you have of that process, the more you may be able to influence the changes you want to make and even the rate at which you can change. If you are writing to help achieve a certain personal goal, you will also want to take time to evaluate what you are learning and what progress you are making. Set a schedule for this review that makes sense with the nature of the goal. A weight loss goal might work well with a weekly assessment, but a goal of self-esteem or something in a relationship might be better evaluated monthly. There are some goals where the daily evaluation will make sense, but that would be if it is something that you are really able to see a difference in from one day to the next. In that case, you may have something that is more like a chart or a log so you can keep up with the daily documentation and then have time to evaluate at the end of the day or the first thing the next morning. This can work if you are developing a new habit or an exercise routine.

Why Journal Writing On The Web? Blogs Are Journals Giving Anyone An Identity, And An Awesome Forum For Sharing Thoughts And Ideas With Others Of Similar Interests
by: M6.Net Journal writing used to be a private, personal experience done late at night, scribbling hardly legible thoughts and daily occurrences down on paper amidst the haze of a barely lit room. When read over on a later date one could find connections and coincidences that sometimes brought deeper insights into the meaning of life. Also, old ideas could be rekindled that otherwise may have been forgotten forever. In the 21st century a strange new type of journal writing is becoming prevalent in contemporary society. Called Blogs, these are journals used by the masses. Why are people sharing their thoughts instead of keeping them private like the days of old? These journals are found on the World Wide Web and can be used for a number of purposes. The Web is a public sphere and human souls are realizing that sharing their ideas and beliefs can have that same epiphany type of effect on others as the old type of journal had on the personal writer. People are also feeling that they have an identity, and putting it on the Web is a great way of expressing themselves. Anyone can do it, and besides words, visuals can also be integrated into the journal, often making the Blogs very appealing to readers/ viewers.

Journal Writing in the 21st Century
I'm not a journal writer. I wrote one for about a year when I was living in London in the early 1990s but found I was leaving bigger and bigger gaps between entries. It got to the point where it wasn't much use trying to catch up. I was just fooling myself. Still, I have dragged out that journal from time to time and find myself reading about someone from another time; someone almost recognisable. Being a livelong procrastinator, I'm always on the look-out for a good excuse: the journal volume is the wrong size, the colour of the paper or cover is no good, the paper inside has the wrong texture, the printed lines (the lines for God's sake!) are the wrong colour, the pen is no good, and my writing is unreadable. Actually the last of these is quite reasonable. I've had terrible hand writing since I was a kid. No matter how much I slow down, print or write larger, sooner or later I degenerate into a pathetic scrawl that even I can't read later on. I envy people who have a good writing hand. It's probably way too late for me to change now. I knew I was onto something when I discovered a massive web-based community dedicated to Moleskines notebooks pencils and the concept of just putting pen to paper . But it's note-taking, not journal writing, that I was doing. Or at least not journal writing as Ann Nugent describes it in
