Kangaroos is on ABC TV on
19/02/2007 at 10:15am. They are marsupials They are the only large mammal that can hop. They live in groups called mobs.
  • Males are called bucks. Females are called does. Babies are called joeys.
Joeys are the size of a jellybean when they are born. They are pink, blind and hairless. They live in their mother's pouch drinking her milk. When they're about a year old they don't need mum's milk any more – but they stay close to her as they still have a lot to learn. Kangaroos are herbivores . They eat only grasses, leaves and the shoots of small trees. As they do most of their feeding in the evening or at night they are nocturnal animals. How do kangaroos keep cool?
  • They rest in the heat of the day.
  • They pant like a dog.
  • They dig shallow holes under trees and lie in the cool sand.
  • They have a spit bath by licking their arms.
Kangaroos are very good swimmers but they will only take to water when chased or if they have no other choice. They have very good hearing, eyesight and sense of smell.

Australia's kangaroos Kangaroos are native to the Australian continent and to parts of Papua New Guinea. Most species are only found in Australia. There are over 60 different species of kangaroo and their close relatives. All kangaroos belong to the super-family Macropodidae (or macropods, meaning 'great-footed'). The macropod family includes kangaroos, wallabies, wallaroos, pademelons, tree-kangaroos and forest wallabies. These species are also found in Papua New Guinea. Species in the macropod family vary greatly in size and weight, ranging from 0.5 kilograms (1.1 pounds) to 90 kilograms (200 pounds). The Potoroinae (potoroid) family of kangaroos includes the potoroo, bettong and rat-kangaroo. This family of kangaroos lives only in Australia. Kangaroos of different types live in all of the diverse areas of Australia, from cold-climate rainforests and desert plains to tropical areas.
Life and habitat
Kangaroos are herbivorous, eating a range of plants, and in some cases fungi. Most are nocturnal but some are active in the early morning and late afternoon. Different kangaroo species live in a range of different environments. Potoroids, for example, make nests while tree-kangaroos live above ground in trees. Larger species of kangaroo tend to shelter under trees or in caves and rock clefts.

There are now more of some kangaroo species, generally the larger ones, than when the European settlers arrived. Other species are gone forever, made extinct by surroundings that were changed too much for them to survive. Many of less well known surviving species are also decreasing in number and may become extinct if we do not take the necessary actions.

Kangaroos
Macropus giganteus
Different members of this family can be as small as a rat or as big as a man. Kangaroos are found chiefly in Australia (including Tasmania), and New Guinea. In Australia, kangaroos occupy the position held on other continents by grass eaters such as antelope, deer, zebra, and bison.
The man-sized kangaroos of Australia are capable of speeds up to 88 km/h for short distances, their means of locomotion being their powerful hind legs, which carry them over the ground in jumps of 9 m or more at a time.
Kangaroos are not greatly bothered by predators, but when pursued by dogs, for instance, often head for water, standing submerged to the chest, and attempting to drown the attacker by holding him underwater. Another defensive tactic is to get their back to a tree and kick at their adversary with their clawed hind feet, sometimes with sufficient force to kill a man.

March 11, 2008 An overabundance of kangaroos munching on native grasses near Australia 's capital, Canberra, has left the government little choice but to kill some of the pesky marsupials, authorities say. In Canberra and elsewhere in the island nation, kangaroos are overgrazing native grasslands and competing with domestic livestock for food. Kangaroos and wallabies
      September 2002
      What do they look like?
Kangaroos and wallabies are marsupials that belong to a small group of animals called macropods. They are only found naturally in Australia and Papua New Guinea. Most macropods have hind legs larger than their forelimbs, large hind feet, and long muscular tails which they use for balance. The word macropod actually means 'big foot'. Kangaroos and wallabies are most active at night, dusk and dawn. All kangaroos and wallabies have forward-opening pouches. Other marsupials - wombats and koalas - have pouches that open backwards. The kangaroo superfamily consists of two family groups. Kangaroos, wallabies, pademelons and tree kangaroos make up one family, while rat-kangaroos, bettongs and potoroos make up the other. There are 45 species of kangaroos and wallabies.
