Greenpeace urges kangaroo consumption to fight global warming
Article from: Karen Collier October 10, 2007 02:35pm MORE kangaroos should be slaughtered and eaten to help save the world from global warming, environmental activists say. The controversial call to cut down on beef and serve more of the national symbol on our dinner plates follows a report on curbing greenhouse gas emissions damaging the planet. Greenpeace energy campaigner Mark Wakeham urged Aussies to substitute some red meat for roo to help reduce land clearing and the release of methane gas from flatulent cattle and sheep. "It is one of the lifestyle changes we can make," Mr Wakeham said. "Changing our meat consumption habits is a small way to make an impact." The eat roo recommendation is contained in a report

Australia Stirs Controversy Over a Plan to Cull 400 Kangaroos

By TIM JOHNSTON Published: March 14, 2008 SYDNEY, Australia The government has portrayed the cull as a necessary case of being cruel to be kind, but the international focus has been mostly on the cruelty. The growing battle over the fate of the kangaroos has pitted the former rock star Peter Garrett of the band Midnight Oil, now environment minister of Australia, against the likes of Paul McCartney, the former Beatle and animal rights advocate. The former base is overrun with about 500 kangaroos, according to the authorities in the Australian Capital Territory, which includes the capital, Canberra, and which is in charge of the base, an unused naval transmitter station. The kangaroos are endangering themselves as well as other native species and rare plants, they said.

Kangaroos and Wallabies
The Kangaroo and the Emu appear on Australia's coat of arms. Kangaroos The term kangaroo is a common term used for the larger members of the macropod, (big toe) family. There are other names given to the smaller members of the species, but if they are a macropod, they are a kangaroo. Fossilized skeletons have been excavated of kangaroos as large as 10 ft. tall and 650 lbs., such as the "Short Faced Kangaroo", which is now extinct and as small as 8 oz. in the "Rat Kangaroo". Many have become extinct through time, but many have reached their demise since the 1900's with man's encroachment. There are over 60 different species of kangaroos confirmed alive in Australia, New Guinea, New Zealand and a few surrounding islands. Some have only been seen a few times, but are believed to still exist. The most commonly seen kangaroo is the Eastern Grey Macropus Giganteus Starting with the largest, the kangaroo, weighing up to 160 lbs. to the wallabies weighing in the 20-30 lb. range and descending to the smallest, being the rat kangaroo at one pound. The different species or types of kangaroos, with the possibly extinct ones omitted, are the kangaroos (3 types), wallaroo (3 types), tree kangaroo (8 types), wallaby (26 types), monjon (1 type), dorcopsis (6 types), pademelon (4 types), bettong (5 types), potoroo (3 types), rat kangaroo (1 type). They are mostly adaptable to new environments with wild populations accidentally started in Hawaii with a pair of rock wallabies escaping from their crate at the airport and through time have built a herd (mob) of over 100 head.

KANGAROOS - Where do they come from? Why do they hop? Did they evolve from some other animal?
K angaroos are the symbol of Australia. They adorn its postage stamps, coat-of-arms, coinage, and even its major international airline. At the zoo or in their natural habitat of Australia (and New Guinea), they remain the most recognized and obvious of Australia’s fauna. Their faces, the way they carry their young in a pouch, their phenomenal leaping power, and their deadly ‘karate kicking’ have long intrigued people. The whole family is best known as the Macropodidae —literally the “big-footed” family. This includes not just the six largest living species commonly called “kangaroos,” but also a further 48 species found in Australia alone, and another 13 found in New Guinea—67 modern species in all. The range of two Australian species, the agile wallaby and the red-legged pademelon, spills into New Guinea as well. The term ‘modern’ is applied because this vast empire was once much greater, with over 100 species in Australia alone.
The term ‘wallaby’ is applied to those species where the adult male has a body mass less than about 20 kg (44 lbs) and feet less than 25 centimeters (10 inches) long. However, scientists can recognize no major anatomical difference between these and kangaroos.

Australian Environment Minister Defends Plan to Slaughter 400 Kangaroos
Wednesday, March 12, 2008
  • E-Mail Print Share: The government's plan is a scaled-down version of an earlier proposal to eradicate about half of the more than 6,000 kangaroos at two military sites in Canberra because their numbers had grown too large and they were grazing themselves out of a habitat. However, the proposed killing of Australia's beloved national symbol has triggered international protests from animal protection activists.

About the National Kangaroo Protection Coalition!
The National Kangaroo Protection Coalition is an alliance of Australian and overseas Wildlife and Animal Protection groups, who are committed to closing down the commercial and non-commercial kangaroo kill. Currently 30 Australian and several overseas groups make up the Coalition. Question; Why do we need the Kangaroo Protection Coalition to protect kangaroos? Why doesn't the Government protect them? Answer; Australia's unique heritage of indigenous animals has been treated with contempt and brutality since white man arrived. Australia is a nation led by soul-less politicians whose only concern is money, power and the ability to destroy this continent's ecology behind a protective wall of propaganda and extraordinary irresponsible legislation, which guarantees extinction. The first thing that needs to be said about the betrayal of the kangaroo is that the sell out has not been confined to government, industry, politicians, media and some scientists…the kangaroo has also been sold out by the environmental movement both nationally and internationally. Over the years, millions of dollars were raised overseas to help the kangaroo. Millions and millions, money that never came back to Australia so that desperately needed legal action could be taken, or professional campaigns funded. In spite of the mountains of evidence that the kangaroo industry is robbing Australia of a critical component of its wildlife heritage, the major Australian conservation groups have by and large ignored the plight of the kangaroo.

Some Interesting Facts About Marsupials (and especially Kangaroos)
  • The name marsupial comes from the marsupium, or pouch, in which these animals carry and nurse their young.
  • Marsupials have very short gestation periods (the time the young spend in the mother's tummy). The Virginia opossum (the only marsupial in Michigan) has a gestation period of only 13 days, and the young are only the size of a question mark when they are born. The Red Kangaroo, native to Australia, has a 30 day gestation period and the single baby weighs only 1 gram (.035 ounces) when it is born. The baby kangaroo, called a joey, spends about 235 days in the mother's pouch.
  • Australia has about 120 species of marsupials, New Guinea has 53 species of marsupials, South and Central America have 90 species of marsupials, and North America has only two species of marsupials.
  • Marsupials range in size from tiny shrew-like creatures (5 grams) to large kangaroos (over 200 pounds). There are marsupials that have occupied every available niche from tiny insect eaters to large plant eaters. There are even marsupial moles!
  • Marsupials first evolved in South America about 100 million years ago. At that time, South America, Australia and Antarctica were connected together in one big continent. Australia and Antarctica gradually moved away from South America and both continents became isolated. Marsupial mammals were free to evolve in isolation, and evolution produced the characteristics found in present day Australian mammals.

Although kangaroo is a subject of protection under the Australian Government, the animals need to be constantly harvested to control numbers, thanks to its prolific affinity to reproduce.
I lived in Australia for three years where, after eating kangaroo tail, buffalo sausages and crocodile cutlets, I thought I'd seen and done most things authentically Ozzie. Kangaroo scrotum never came into the picture though. Bummer.
Having said that, I'm not sure how I'd feel holding on to kangaroo testicles to open a bottle (what do they stuff them with?), but I would certainly NEVER forget the person who gave it to me. They are available mostly in grey, brown and white, and $25 is not a bad price for something as "special" as this.

DATABASE SEARCH Several species of kangaroos and wallabies, Family Macropodidea, are at times considered to be overabundant and cause damage to production in Australia and environmental damage where they have been introduced into New Zealand. In Australia, 5 species are commercially harvested under a program to reduce their impact to acceptable levels. They are the red kangaroo Macropus rufus , eastern grey kangaroo M. giganteus , western grey kangaroo M. fuliginosus , the euro or wallaroo M. robustus and the whip-tailed wallaby M. parryi . Only the two major species, the red and grey kangaroo will be considered in more detail here. More information on these and other species can be found in the report by Tony Pople and Gordon Grigg (1999) and a report to NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service by Penny Olsen and Mike Braysher (2000). In Australia, all kangaroos are protected native fauna under Commonwealth, state and territory legislation. However, certain species may be harvested to reduce the damage that they cause. Because some kangaroo products are exported, the Commonwealth requires that those state and territories that harvest and export kangaroo products, develop and have approved management programs for these commercially harvested species. The primary aim is to ensure that the harvested species are conserved over their entire range. The management programs must state:
After each management program is approved, conservative annual harvest quotas are set for each species. The potential impact of factors such as droughts and floods are factored into the assessment and the annual quotas are adjusted accordingly.
