Red Kangaroos, also called Giant Red Kangaroos, are the largest living marsupials that are about 5 feet long, weigh 90 kilograms and have tail as long as 42 inches that is used as a balance mechanism when animals jump. The Kangaroos can't walk instead they hop very high. The females are naturally smaller than the males. These animals feed mostly on grass and other vegetation. Sometimes they can do without water feeding only vegetation for a long period of time. They are the best jumpers of all mammals and can jump as high as 28 feet in distance and 6 feet in height; their speed exceeds 30 mph. They can jump for hours at a speed of 12 mph.

Lumholtz's Tree-Kangaroo:
Conserving a rare marsupial
We know a great deal about the koala and other cute creatures of Australia, but tree-kangaroos are elusive animals that keep well hidden in the rainforest canopy and have maintained a degree of mystique. Tree-kangaroos are rare where they exist in the tropical rainforests of Australia and New Guinea, relying on the fragile and swiftly diminishing tropical rainforest environment for their survival. As land continues to be cleared for crops and grazing, it is important to understand their ecology so we can conserve these rare arboreal marsupials. How does the tree-kangaroo respond and adjust to changes in its environment, such as land clearing, and which specific dangers pose the greatest threat to its survival?
Graeme Newell began his search for answers during a post-doctoral fe llowship at CSIRO's Tropical Forest Research Centre in Atherton, Queensland. His study focussed on Lumholtz's Tree-kangaroo

Mutant Marsupials Take Up Arms Against Australian Air Force
The reuse of some object-oriented code has caused tactical headaches for Australia's armed forces. As virtual reality simulators assume larger roles in helicopter combat training , programmers have gone to great lengths to increase the realism of the their scenarios, including detailed landscapes and the case of the Northern Territory's Operation Phoenix of kangaroos (since groups of disturbed animals might well give away a helicopters position).
The head of the Defense Science and Technology Organization's Land Operations/Simulations division reportedly instructed developers to model the local marsupials' movements and reaction to helicopters.
Being efficient programmers, they just re-appropriated some code originally used to model infantry detachments reactions under the same stimuli, changed the mapped icon from a soldier to a kangaroo, and increased the figures' speed of movement.
Eager to demonstrate their flying skills for some visiting American pilots, the hotshot Aussies "buzzed" the virtual kangaroos in low flight during a simulation. The kangaroos scattered, as predicted, and the Americans nodded appreciatively

Introduction
Wacol kangaroos information
Male Eastern Grey Kangaroo The kangaroo: an Aussie icon
The kangaroo is an Australian icon. Its size, strength and speed are traits that make it a natural logo or emblem for Australian organisations and sporting clubs. It is also part of our national coat of arms. But many people see large male kangaroos as placid grazing animals. The reality is that they can be aggressive towards people. Although the risk of this happening is very small, we still need to be wary around them.
Kangaroos on the suburban fringe: a new relationship?
Watching a mother kangaroo feeding while its joey fumbles around in her pouch is a special experience. When wild animals seem this placid and caring, it can be tempting to get close to them, touch them and even feed them. With regular feeding, a kangaroo learns to approach people for food. Even without feeding, kangaroos readily accept our presence if we show no aggression towards them. But, if we get too close, they may see us as a threat.

On safari in Belize with a visionary eco-tour outfit
By Dave Herndon This story begins in 1972, when a Long Island-based outdoors writer named Nick Karas takes his 12-year-old son Ken out of school to go on a safari the entire length of Africa, from Cairo to the Cape. A precocious lad, Ken brings along a 16 mm camera to film the adventure — and a career is born. Ken grows up to be a successful wildlife filmmaker, shooting for months on end in the wilds of Central America and Africa, and showcasing his work on prestigious outlets like National Geographic and PBS. Along the way he cultivates a profound appreciation for and understanding of nature. He learns skills that few sons of Long Island ever come to master, such as how to capture fierce predators. He learns the art of patience. And even after the video age sets off an explosion of exploitative wildlife programming that prompts Ken to retire from the nature-show business, all the special knowledge he acquired will be needed for his second career: environmental conservationist. Karas’ bold plan is to rescue a precious piece of the natural world that he has come to know well from his film projects — in southern Belize, a corner of the Caribbean where the Yucat¡n Peninsula joins the isthmus of Central America — and he’ll do it by establishing a circuit of five small, up-market lodges along the lines of the best safari camps in Africa, where the guests are few, the hospitality and guiding excellent. So far, he’s got two up and running.

Sir Paul hops to defense of kangaroos
NEWS WIRE SERVICES Thursday, March 13th 2008, 4:00 AM CANBERRA Australia - Former Beatle Paul McCartney has gotten behind a group that promises to use human shields to protect hundreds of kangaroos from a planned cull. Kangaroos are breeding like bunnies, said officials who ordered 500 of the cuddly hop-a-longs be shot dead. "There will be people standing in front of the dart guns," vowed Wildlife Protection Association spokesman Pat O'Brien McCartney urged his fans to "do all you can to end this shameful massacre." "There is an urgent need for action to protect kangaroos from a barbaric industry which slaughters them for meat and leather," he said on the Web site of the animal welfare group Viva! In 2004, there was an international outcry over the shooting of 900 kangaroos at a dam supplying water to Canberra. The animals were causing erosion problems through grazing. Meanwhile, McCartney also weighed in yesterday on why he is a vegetarian: He was on a fishing trip when he realized that the fish's life was "as important to him as mine is to me."

This is the first in a series of articles on the many creatures inhabiting Australia. Presently over half the world's endangered mammals are Australian. There is very little hope for these under the present "socialist conservation model" practised in Australia where there is "plenty of funding for conservation groups but no funding for conservation". It is so easy to see the problem that Australian wildlife face. Each endangered species has a "recovery group" associated with it. The more endangered the species, the more funding the recovery group gets. How can a system work which rewards failure and punishes success?...Source: Earth Sanctuaries Earth Sanctuaries has reintroduced many species of rare and endangered wildlife back into the wild. So scientists in Australia are going to transfer intestinal bacteria of kangaroos into cattle and see what happens. According to the government of Queensland, almost 14% of all greenhouse gas emissions from Australia come from cow farts, so this seemingly silly idea could actually make a big difference.

Australian plan to kill 400 kangaroos draws protests
By TIM JOHNSTON The New York Times The government has portrayed the cull as a necessary case of being cruel to be kind, but the international focus has been more on the cruelty than the kindness. The authorities in the Australian Capital Territory, which includes the national capital, Canberra, and which is in charge of the Belconnen Naval Transmitter Station, said the area is overrun with about 500 kangaroos that are endangering themselves and other native species and rare plants. "If nature is left to take its course, there will be severe effects on the endangered grassland and many kangaroos will suffer a slow death by starvation," the territory government said in a report. It wants the Department of Defense, which owns the 286-acre Belconnen site, to cull 400 of the Eastern gray kangaroos.

Kangaroos run wild in France
November 12, 2003 - 8:35AM Print this article Email to a friend It does not resemble any desert plain in outback Australia, but around 50 kangaroos which escaped a French animal park 30 years ago are happily living wild in a forest west of Paris. The grey marsupials broke free from the Emance nature reserve in the Yvelines department and are now bounding around woods bordering a dozen villages in the neighbouring Eure-et-Loir department, Le Parisien daily reported. "The kangaroos' presence in the forest didn't happen yesterday. They began making the woods their own after some people who tried to steal them released several of them," a park employee said. Signs signalling their presence have been erected along roads bisecting the southern part of the huge Rambouillet forest. "Kangaroos have been part of our daily life for 20 years," said Francoise Grangeon, mayor of the town of Emance. Even the magazine of the town school is called the "Joking Kangaroo", Grangeon said.

Signatures Published by Brett Clifton on Mar 07, 2008 Category: Animal Welfare Region: Australia Target: ACT GOVERNMENT Web site: http://www.canberraroos.com Description/History: In May 2007 the media exposed a covert plan by the Department of Defence and the
Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Government to shoot to kill up to 3,200 Kangaroos at two Defence sites in the ACT.
The reasons given at the time: to ‘save’ the kangaroos from starving and to prevent them from competing with certain endangered grassland species reported to be on these sites: the golden sun moth, a legless lizard, and the earless dragon.
Around of these kangaroos are trapped by a 2.5 metre high fence on a 116 hectare parcel of land at the former Belconnen Naval Transmission Station (BNTS). Of these, the plan was for 400 to be killed and have the remaining kangaroos forcefully sterilised. Somewhat extreme and barbaric measures to protect a moth, and unlikely to be the real reason why the ACT Government is so keen to clear this site, as the area around it is earmarked for housing development.
Following an immediate public outcry and subsequent consultations between Defence and a range of interest groups, Defence agreed to consult more widely. Members of
