Macropodids are found in Australia, New Guinea, and on some nearby islands. Members of this family are of medium to large size (0.5 - 90 kg). Their posture is plantigrade . They have long, narrow hind feet and powerful hind limbs. The fourth toe of the hind foot is the longest and strongest. It lies in a line with the main limb elements and transmits the thrust of hopping (this toe is secondarily somewhat reduced in rock wallabies and tree kangaroos). The outside (fifth) toe is also large. As is true of all members of their order (and members of the order Peramelemorphia as well), macropodids are

Australian minister defends planned cull of 400 kangaroos in capital

Australia's environment minister defended plans to slaughter 400 kangaroos in the national capital as protesters vowed to prevent the cull. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS/Rob Griffith, File
CANBERRA, Australia - Australia's environment minister defended plans Wednesday to slaughter 400 kangaroos in the national capital because they are eating the region's grass but protesters promised to prevent the cull. The government's plan is a scaled-down version of an earlier proposal to eradicate about one-half of the more than 6,000 kangaroos at two military sites in Canberra because their numbers had grown too large and they were grazing themselves out of a habitat. However, the proposed killing of Australia's beloved national symbol has triggered international protests from animal-protection activists. Wildlife Protection Association spokesman Pat O'Brien said Wednesday he received legal advice that a court challenge to the cull was unlikely to succeed, so activists planned to block the site "to anybody that wants to go in and kill them," he told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio.

Kangaroos and Wallabies Affectionately known as "Roo Heaven," the Australia Zoo's macropod enclosure is one of the largest and most beautiful kangaroo and wallaby enclosures anywhere in the world. This macropod paradise has a wide variety of habitat types that cater to the many different species that call Roo Heaven their home. Open plains and grassland is where one will find the three species of large kangaroo at the zoo. Eastern gray and red kangaroos are the most numerous, but a few western gray kangaroos hang about as well. Lurking in the woodland areas are mobs of red-necked wallabies, black-striped wallabies and the occasional common wallaroo. These smaller macropods prefer habitats with more vegetative cover. Roo Heaven even has its very own swamp, which caters to a herd of swamp wallabies. These small macropods can be found in a wide variety of habitats in the wild but certainly prefer the wetter areas at the zoo. A beautiful rainforest creek runs through Roo Heaven, and this is where one will find the secretive red-legged pademelons. In the wild, these pretty little macropods are more often heard than seen, but at the Australia Zoo visitors get to see them right up close.

A kangaroo is a marsupial from the family Macropodidae (macropods, meaning 'large foot'). In common use the term is used to describe the largest species from this family, the Red Kangaroo , the Antilopine Kangaroo , and the Eastern and Western Grey Kangaroo of the Macropus genus. The family also includes many smaller species which include the wallabies tree-kangaroos wallaroos pademelons and the Quokka , some 63 living species in all. Kangaroos are endemic to the continent of Australia , while the smaller macropods are found in Australia and New Guinea In general, larger kangaroos have adapted much better to changes wrought to the Australian landscape by humans and though many of their smaller cousins are endangered, they are plentiful. They are not farmed to any extent, but wild kangaroos are shot for meat . Although there is some controversy, harvesting kangaroos for meat has many environmental and health benefits over other meats.

When the Australian continental plate separated from Antarctica and began drifting north 64 to 136 million years ago, only its higher elevations protruded above the ocean, comprising a patchwork of isolated tropical islands. As their climate cooled and dried, and ocean levels fell, they formed a continent blanketed by large patches of grasslands.

If you always thought of the kangaroo as one of a kind, you might be surprised to know that it belongs to a large family with as many as 60 species!
The 6 larger species are called kangaroos and wallaroos while the smaller ones are called rat kangaroos, potoroos, tree kangaroos, pademelons and wallabies. How do you identify the different large kangaroos? By their noses! A wallaroo's nose has a large black bare patch around it. A red kangaroo has a smaller, boomerang-shaped black bare patch on its nose. The grey kangaroo's nose is covered with hair except for narrow bare bands around the nostrils. Kangaroos are big-footed marsupials which evolved in Australia. The males of the species are known as boomers, the females as flyers and the young as joeys. The female has a pouch in front of her body in which she carries the young after birth. Standing to attention! Kangaroos vary greatly in size. The smallest is the musky rat kangaroo which is about the size of a rabbit. The largest is the 1.6m tall red kangaroo which weighs about 60 kg and is the largest surviving marsupial anywhere in the world. Kangaroos often stand upright. They have a narrow head with a long nose and long oval ears. They are covered with dense fur and have furry tails. Only the musky rat kangaroo has a bare tail. Their teeth are long and strong, especially the upper incisors.

    Red Kangaroo Profile
The red kangaroo is the world's largest marsupial. Females have one baby at a time, which at birth is smaller than a cherry. The infant immediately climbs into its mother's pouch and does not emerge for two months. Until they reach about eight months of age, threatened young kangaroos, called joeys, will quickly dive for the safety of mom's pouch. As they grow, joeys' heads and feet can often be seen hanging out of the pouch.
Red kangaroos hop along on their powerful hind legs and do so at great speed. A red kangaroo can reach speeds of over 35 miles (56 kilometers) an hour. Their bounding gate allows them to cover 25 feet (8 meters) in a single leap and to jump 6 feet (1.8 meters) high.
Female red kangaroos are smaller, lighter, and faster than males. They also boast a blue-hued coat, so many Australians call them "blue fliers."
Larger male kangaroos are powerfully built. Like many species, male kangaroos sometimes fight over potential mates. They often lean back on their sturdy tail and "box" each other with their strong hind legs. Kangaroos can also bite and wield sharp claws, which they may do in battle with an enemy like a dingo.

The Red Kangaroo is approximately 5 feet long and has a tail that is about 42 inches long. This tail is used as a balance mechanism. Red Kangaroos can't walk and are limited to hopping as a means of locomotion. However, they are able to jump 29 feet in distance and 6 feet in height. For short periods they can attain a speed of 35 mph. They can maintain a speed of 12 mph for hours. The male Red Kangaroo is usually a reddish color and the female is bluish-gray. However this is not always the case. Kangaroos have long, strong hind legs and short, weaker forelimbs. Red kangaroos survive on grass and other vegetation. They are also able to go for long periods without water as long as they have access to green plants. They are able to draw enough moisture out of their food to survive.

The Forester kangaroo is the largest marsupial in Tasmania and the second largest in the world males can reach over 60 kg and, when literally on tippy toes, stand 2 m tall! Colour varies from light brownish grey to grey. They have relatively large ears and differ from the other two species in having hair between the nostrils and upper lip. They often make clucking sounds between themselves and give a guttural cough when alarmed. Distribution
The species is common on mainland Australia, where it is commonly known as the grey kangaroo. In many areas of the mainland, the clearing of bushland, creation of improved pasture and provision of farm dams has upset the natural balance in favour of increased macropod numbers. In Tasmania, however, the population was reduced to 15% of its previous level in the 1950s and 60s. The Forester kangaroo is restricted to northeastern Tasmania and small areas in central Tasmania.
