Cultural Profile
A comparison between American Culture and the Culture of the Masai Tribe based on Florence Kluckhohn's Value Orientations
Relationship patterns
In her research, Kluckhohn discusses three relationship patterns, individual, collateral, and linear. The two relationship patters that apply to the Masai and American cultures are individual and collateral. The individual pattern refers to cultures based on the importance of the individual and his or her success. According to Kluckhohn, this pattern also includes the importance of the nuclear family rather than on extended family members. An individual would place high importance on his or her success as it relates to caring for the members of the immediate family such as children and spouse. This type of pattern is indicative of American culture and society. Much emphasis is placed on personal goals and achievements relating to professional success, personal success, and familial support. Traditionally, the nuclear family consists of husband, wife, and children. The husband, and oftentimes the wife, will work to support the family. Decisions are made based on the welfare of the family, as well as the personal gain and social status of the individual. The American individualist society dictates communication campaigns. The message would be aimed at the individual and his or her potential for success and status. Successful campaigns tap into the individualist needs with respect to social status and family welfare.

Kenya Cultural Tour - 7 days Culutal safari in Kenya Tour Arrives in Nairobi: Kenya Cultural Tour Day 1 Today the group arrives in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. Part of Masai land when the British arrived, this modern capital grew with the development of the railway. Derived from a Masai word meaning "Cold Water," Nairobi is a pleasant mix of colonial British with modern and traditional African influences. Overnight in Nairobi. Dinner if required. Today the group travels from the "White Highlands," so called because of the large number of Europeans who settled here, northwards to the Samburu National Reserve, arriving in time for lunch. En route the tour may catch a glimpse of the glaciers coating the summit of Mt Kenya. The Samburu Reserve is mainly semi-desert savannah plain, with the seasonal Ewaso Nyiro River supporting a wide variety of game such as elephant, buffalo, cheetah, leopard and lion as well as dik-dik (a tiny antelope), and warthog. On your afternoon game drive you can almost certainly be guaranteed close-up sightings of elephant, giraffe and gazelle. Overnight in the Samburu National Reserve. Samburu Serena Lodge or similar. All meals. Samburu: Kenya Cultural Tour Day 4 Today our tour provides a full day of game viewing in Samburu National Reserve where we have a good chance of seeing the so-called "Northerns" the Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe and the blue-legged Somali ostrich species of animals found only in this dry area of Kenya. In addition, crocodiles can often be seen along the river bank. This afternoon's tour may have an opportunity for the group to pay a visit to a nearby Samburu village (optional expense). The Samburu are semi-nomadic pastoralists well-known for their proud adherence to traditional tribal customs and elaborate personal adornment. Overnight in the Samburu National Reserve. Samburu Serena Lodge or similar. All meals in group.

Home Study Abroad Kenya Kenya is a diverse country, with many different cultures represented. Notable cultures include the Swahili on the coast, pastoralist communities in the north, and several different communities in the central and western regions. Today, the Massai culture is the best known, due to its heavy exposure from tourism.
( A Maasai man in traditional attire ) National Dress Music Kenya is home to a diverse range of music styles, ranging from imported popular music, afro-fusion and benga music to traditional folk songs. The guitar is the most popular instrument in Kenyan music, and songs often feature intricate guitar rhythms. The most famous guitarist of the early 20th century was Fundi Konde. Other notable musicians of the 60's era include Fadhili Williams (recognized by many as the author of the hit song "Malaika" that was later re-done by Miriam Makeba and Boney M) and Daudi Kabaka. Popular music in the 80's and 90's could be divided into two genres: the Swahili sound and the Congolese sound. There are varying regional styles, and performers often create tourist-oriented "hotel pop" that is similar to western music. Them Mushrooms later renamed Uyoga was one of the popular groups in this era. In the recent past, newer varieties of modern popular music have arisen which are mostly local derivatives of the western hip-hop and rap. They include the sub-genres: "Genge" and "Kapuka" beats. This has revolutionized popular Kenyan music and created an industry dominated by the youth.

True at First Light by Ernest Hemingway said to be a fictional memoir North of South: An African Journey by Shiva Naipaul an account of a journey through Eastern Africa by the younger brother of Nobel Laureate V.S. Naipaul; Shiva died in 1985, aged 40; I have read the book twice; the section on Kenya is incisive and entertaining. M.G. Vassanji is an Indian-Canadian with Kenyan connections. I'm told he has at least one novel with Kenya as its subject. I'm not familiar with Vassanji's work.
