21. Koala Bear - Interesting Facts About The Australian Koala Bear - Koala Toy
koala Facts from Sydney Australia, The cutest koala bear kangaroo gifts and toys. A great gift idea for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
http://www.koalaexpress.com.au/facts1.htm
Koalas aren't bears as many people are led to believe. They aren't even related to bears. The koala is related to the kangaroo and the wombat. The koala is a mammal. The reason the koala is called a koala bear is because the koala looks like a teddy bear. The koala's scientific name is Phasclarctos cinereus. Now there are only 2,000 to 8,000 koalas in the wild! Although not officially classified as endangered, the population of Australian koalas has dropped by 90% in less than a decade!
This is due to the destruction of the koala's natural habitat, a narrow crescent on the eastern coast of Australia. Logging, agriculture and urban development have not only reduced the area available to them, but added other dangers. The koala's habitat has been criss-crossed by roads, resulting in many road kills and attacks by neighboring pet dogs are frequent. Disease, too, has taken its toll on the koala... By purchasing one of our cute and cuddly Australian made gifts you are helping preserve the natural habitat of the Australian Koala. We make regular donations to the preservation of the Australian Koala.

General Information
  • History of the Koala
T here were once several different kinds of koala all but one of which had died out. The earliest known member of the koala family was a browser, which lived 15 millions years ago. Evidence of a 'giant' koala, twice the size of its modern descendant, exists in fossils dating back more than 40,000 years.
  • The Australian Koala Page
You may think a Koala is a bear, but it isn't. In fact the Koala has no relation to a bear. It is a distant cousin to the Wombat and both the Koala and the Wombat have fossil history over 15 million years. The Koala is Australia's most popular and most loved marsupial mammal.
  • How Long Does a Koala Live?
Koalas, together with wombats, their closest relatives, belong to the super-family of Vombatoidea. It is believed that some 25 million years ago, they shared a common ancestor. Even today, despite the differences in habits and structure, koalas and wombats have many common anatomical features, pointing to a shared past.
  • Koalas The koala is a small bear-like, tree-dwelling, herbivorous marsupial which averages about 9kg (20lb) in weight. It's fur is thick and usually ash grey with a tinge of brown in places.

    Koala Profile
Though often called the "koala bear," this cuddly animal is not a bear at all; it is a marsupial, or pouched mammal. After birth, a female carries a single baby in its pouch for about six months. When the infant emerges, it rides on its mother's back or clings to her belly, accompanying her everywhere until it is about a year old.
Koalas live in eastern Australia, where the eucalyptus trees they love are most plentiful. In fact, they rarely leave these trees, and their sharp claws and opposable digits easily keep them aloft. During the day they doze, tucked into forks or nooks in the trees, sleeping for up to 18 hours.
When not asleep a koala feeds on eucalyptus leaves, especially at night. Koalas do not drink much water and they get most of their moisture from these leaves. Each animal eats a tremendous amount for its size—about two and a half pounds (one kilogram) of leaves a day. Koalas even store snacks of leaves in pouches in their cheeks.
A special digestive system—a long gut—allows koalas to break down the tough eucalyptus leaves and remain unharmed by their poison. Koalas eat so many of these leaves that they take on a distinctive odor from their oil, reminiscent of cough drops.

Eating (603 KB) Koalas spend most of their lives in trees. Their large paws have strong claws that they use to get a grip on limbs. They can climb by gripping a branch with their front paws and bringing their back paws up to their front. Then they move their front claws up and repeat this motion. This motion is very slow in order to conserve energy. They also sleep up to 18 hours each day. The koala has a very short tail, so it cannot be used to hold onto trees. Female koalas have a pouch, a distinguishing characteristic of marsupials. Males are up to 50 percent larger than females and have a broader face. The Koala has been known to feed on a large number of eucalypt and non-eucalypt trees. However, most of their diet is made up of only a few species of eucalypt trees. The koala eats about one pound of leaves each day. This feeding starts at dusk. They obtain almost all of their water from the leaves that they eat.

    STORY:
My daughter went to the zoo to visit the Koalas with her daycare class the other week. The koalas are visiting from another zoo, so the kids made a special trip to see them. When she came home that night she asked Daddy and I if we knew what baby koalas eat. Being "oh so wise" parents, we decided to amaze her with our vast knowledge of the world and simultaneously answered "Eucalyptus leaves!". Tasha smiled her infamous "gotcha" smile and said "Nope, they eat poop." Quite convinced that she had somehow horribly misunderstood someone at the zoo, we gave her our "condescending parents" smile and replied that we were quite sure she was mistaken but that we'd ask her daycare instructor the next day to clarify things for us. Off we went to daycare the next morning, secure in the knowledge that we were going to be proven more intelligent than our 5 year old. When we arrived, Tasha ran up to her instructor and with a wink and a giggle asked her to tell Mommy and Daddy what baby koalas eat. Her instructor winked back and promptly told us that koalas eat their parent's poop (ICK!). She went on to explain that it is by eating this not so appetizing form of baby food that the baby koalas build up a tolerance to the poison in the Eucalyptus leaves. Makes sense, but ICK!

Its strong legs and sharp claws help it grip the trunks. A nocturnal animal, it feeds at night on the young shoots and leaves of high branches, and spends its day sleeping curled up in a fork of a tree. As recently as a hundred years ago, the koala was wide- spread in Australia. But increased settlement by man brought about a dramatic decline in its population. Much of the koala's natural habitat was destroyed by fires set deliberately to clear the land. The fur trade introduced another threat to the koala; more than two million skins were exported from Australia in 1924 alone. Above: A baby koala spends the first 6 months of its life in its mother's pouch. Then, for the next 2 or 3 months, it clings to its mother's fur during the day, returning to her pouch at night. Above: Koala mothers and their young enjoy a close relationship. She will happily carry her youngster until it is time for it to become in- dependent.
