About Us May 29, 2008 Select Language English Fran§ais Deutsch Bahasa Indonesia Espa±ol is a significant year for all Koreans in that it marks thefiftieth anniversary of the country's liberation from Japan. Forthirty-six years, Korea had to suffer under the brutal and inhumane rule of the Japanese, and liberation meant far more than mere physical freedom from oppression. It was a chance to reclaim the country's place in the world and to restore its proud history. To commemorate this special occasion, KBS, as a public broadcasting system representing Korea, takes pride in publishing The History of Korea. The book was written with foreign readers in mind and is designed to provide an accessible, fair and objective overview of the ountry's history. Korea is a proud country with a unique culture and tradition that are over 5,000 years old. Yet results of various surveys indicate that many people around the world do not have a correct understanding of the country's history, and information in this area has been relatively scarce. The purpose of this book is to address the inaccuracies or distortions foreigners may have in their knowledge of the history of Korea.

SITE UPDATED 02-12-08 The Ranger Infantry Companies (Airborne) of the Korean War The outbreak of hostilities in Korea in June of 1950 again signaled the need for Rangers. Colonel John Gibson Van Houten was selected by the Army Chief of Staff to head the Ranger training program at Ft. Benning, Georgia. On September 15, 1950, Colonel Van Houten reported to the Chief of Staff, Office of the Chief of Army Field Forces, Fort Monroe, Virginia. He was informed that training of Ranger-type units was to begin at Ft. Benning at the earliest possible date. The target date was October 1, 1950 with a tentative training period of 6 weeks. The implementing orders called for formation of a headquarters detachment and four Ranger infantry companies (airborne). Requests went out for volunteers who were willing to accept "extremely Hazardous" duty in the combat zone in the Far East. In the 82nd Airborne Division, the results of the call for volunteers was astounding. Some estimates were as high as 5,000 men (experienced Regular Army Paratroopers). The ruthless sorting out process began. Where possible, selection of the men was accomplished by the officers who would command the companies, similar to colonial days when Robert Rogers was recruiting.

Home Study Abroad Korea There is archaeological evidence that people were living on the Korean Peninsula around 700,000 years ago, during the Lower Paleolithic. The earliest known Korean pottery dates to around 8000 BC, and the Neolithic period begins around 6000 BC. The Jeulmun Pottery Period spans from 3500 BC to 2000 BC. ( Buryeongsa ) Gojoseon Gojoseon was founded in 2333 BC, according to the Dangun legend. It was known as Joseon but is called Gojoseon ("Old Joseon") today to distinguish it from the recent Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). The original capital was Asadal, in southern Manchuria, but later moved to today's Pyongyang in North Korea. Gojoseon cultural artifacts and walled cities are found throughout Korea and Manchuria. Archeological and contemporary written records indicate it likely developed from a federation of walled cities into a centralized state sometime between the 7th and 4th centuries BC, when it declared itself a kingdom and warred with northern Zhou dynasty kingdoms of China. In 108 BC, the Chinese Han dynasty defeated Gojoseon and installed four commanderies in northern Korea and Manchuria primarily as commercial outposts. By 75 BC, three of those commanderies had fallen to Korean resistance. One commandery remained under Chinese control until 313 AD.

South Korea's History The land of South Korea has had people living on it for thousands of years. There is evidence that it was first inhabited before 10,000 BC. Throughout much of its history, both China and Japan have invaded South Korea. This ended in 1910 when Japan formally annexed Korea and it became a Japanese colony. After Japan was defeated in World War II, Korea was liberated. A wartime agreement allowed US troops to occupy the southern part of Korea and Soviet troops to occupy the northern part. After the US and Soviet troops left in 1950 the North Korean army invaded South Korea. This was the start of the Korean War. In 1953 there was a truce between the two sides, making the border of the two countries where it was before the war started. This line is known as the 38th parallel. Since this time South Korea has enjoyed peaceful, yet nervous times from the north.
