What is an Endowed Chair?
An endowed chair is a mark of distinction in universities across the nation, and an opportunity to give a gift that will last in perpetuity. Your gift provides the means to engage world-renowned faculty in studies that shape and transform the lives of students and the community. Because the endowment creates a fund in perpetuity, the Chair becomes associated with a permanent area of study at the University and an honored part of its history. Support on Campus
The Department of Comparative Literature and Foreign Languages includes faculty in Asian, Classical, European, and Slavic languages and literatures, and provides a strong infrastructure for the growth of Korean studies on the Riverside campus. With our growing Korean-American student population, demand for Korean language instruction is strong. Currently, UCR offers two years of Korean language courses and all are very well enrolled. The new position would expand these offerings and allow students to get a BA in Asian Literature with an emphasis in Korean.

Unlike Chinese and Japanese, Korean has a simple alphabet that is very easy to learn. Though most foreigners can't speak much Korean, the majority can read after a few months. You will quickly pick up enough Korean to read and write an address, read a menu, buy things at a public market, use basic social expressions, and make taxis go where you want them to. Although most Koreans younger than about 40 have studied English for several years, many are quite shy about trying to use it. If you need assistance or directions in English, you are most likely to be understood by a teenager or young adult. They also seem to genuinely enjoy the attention a foreigner pays in asking for assistance or information.
Romanization
Korea has made several significant changes to how Korean is transcribed into Roman characters (Romanization). These changes took effect in 2000; however, it is common to come across different spellings of the same word. Generally, the changes make it easier to write Korean words and sounds consistently in Roman characters; non-letter pronunciation markers have been replaced by letters or letter combinations. Note that not all of the earlier versions of words, especially names, have changed, and there are more complex phonetic issues involved than simply changing one Roman letter for another. In any event, the chart below should help when reading maps and using the Internet in English.

The Korean language is the most widely used language in Korea , and is the official language of both South and North Korea. The language is also spoken widely in neighbouring Yanbian China . Worldwide, there are around 78 million Korean speakers, including large groups in the former Soviet Union , the United States Canada Brazil and Japan . Proper classification of Korean is not universally agreed on, but it is often considered by many to be a language isolate . Some linguists instead group it in the Altaic family of languages. Hangul syllabic and phonetic. Sino-Korean characters ( Hanja ) are also used in writing. While the most commonly used words in the language are of native Korean origin, well over 50% of the language's vocabulary consists of words composed from Hanja . Korean is agglutinative in its word formation and SOV in its syntax.

Korea and Languages
I am learning Korean as a matter of being here, it's just what I do. It's both easy and hard to learn. The writing is easy to learn to pronounce, but the amount of vocabulary to learn for a westerner is enormous.
English in Korea
Finding someone who speaks English is fairly easy if you are in Seoul or near a US Military base/post (there are a lot of them), but can be a bit of a challenge as you travel outside into the countryside. It isn't impossible to communicate out there, but its definitely a fun experience. You'd be amazed at how well you can communicate with gesture when you are motivated (I am hungry, you want my money).
Hangrish*/Konglish For you engrish fans, korea has its own share of bad translations:
  • on a low ceiling going down a stairway "caution your head!" on the trash dumpster "we recyclable" most exit signs (subway, train station, etc.) simply say "way out"
