ADVERTISING INFORMATION Kuwait - Culture Islam is the official religion of Kuwait and is practiced throughout the country. Islam forbids the consumption of pork or alcohol and these items are illegal in Kuwait There are also churches of varying denominations for Christian residents. The official language is Arabic though English is widely used especially in business, banking and big shopping centres. Most street signs are written in both languages. There are essentially five levels of Kuwaiti society: the ruling family, the old Kuwaiti merchant families, former Bedouins who settled in Kuwait, Arabs from other countries and foreigners. Arabic is the official language and 90% of the population is Muslim. In per-capita terms, Kuwait has one of the highest incomes in the world. Before the Kuwaiti invasion in August 1990, less than 40% of the population was Kuwaiti and of the work force, less than 20% were Kuwaiti. Non-Kuwaitis enjoyed most of the welfare benefits of Kuwaiti citizens. The vote, on the other hand, was restricted to about 65,000 Kuwaiti males descended from men living in the country before 1920. It is inevitable in a country like Kuwait, which has grown from relative poverty to great wealth in a very short time that clashes should occur between the old and the new. It cannot be emphasized too strongly that the most important part of Kuwaiti society remains the family, and here the old values are retained and cherished.

Kuwait
Culture
In Arabic, islam means submission and a muslim is one who submits to Allah's will. Kuwait's brand of Islam is not as strict as Saudi Arabia's, but the country isn't exactly liberal. The essence of Islam is the belief that there is only one god, Allah, and Mohammed is his prophet. It is the people's duty to believe in and serve Allah in the manner that is laid out in the Quran. Most Kuwaitis are Sunni Muslims, though there's a substantial Shiite minority. The official language of Kuwait is Arabic, but English is widely understood. While not an ethnic group, Bedouin are archetypal Arabs: the camel-herding nomads who travel the deserts in search of food. From among their ranks came the warriors who spread Islam to North Africa and Persia 1400 years ago. Today Bedouin are found mainly in Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Yemen, but their numbers are unknown due to their habit of wandering where no census-taker would dare. Cultural foundations do their part to preserve Bedouin art traditions, especially weaving, but the arts scene in Kuwait is otherwise fairly limited. The Bedouin loom is called Al-Sadu. Textiles are manufactured from sheep wool, dyed, then intricately woven. Fuul felafel and houmos are the three staples of the Middle East, and you'll find them at breakfast, lunch and dinner.

New Reply Don't you think Kuwait needs more museums, libraries, book stores, cultural centers?...it is so lacking these qualities... Larry 23 May 2007, 06:10:28 pm Replies Reply to Larry Larry, my friend, you are so right, they lack culture and education, to speak frankly... I lived there for 8 months, I came, not for the money, like most people, but to know the culture. I was about to die of boredom. Well, silly me, Kuwait ain't the place for any cultural manifestations. I don't mean to be rude, but they've fallen from the camel's hump a few decades ago, right in the Jaguar or Benz and since their only interest is to get a bottle of booze and go shopping, they don't really have time to develop their culture. Let's wish them luck in the future! 27 June 2007, 12:17:50 pm ''Larry, my friend, you are so right, they lack culture and education, to speak frankly...
