New Law for Replacing Electronic Keys
Have you ever lost the electronic key to your car? Replacing one is expensive and inconvenient, but a new law will make this easier for new vehicles after January 1, 2008. California Senate Bill 1542 was introduced on February 23, 2006 and approved by the Governor seven months later. To track the history of this bill or any other California bill through the legislature, visit http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/ , the official site for California legislative information maintained by the Legislative Counsel . There is bill information back to 1993 , indexed by the Assembly or Senate, and browseable by bill number or by author. Once you find the bill, you can check its status and history , and, as is the case in the example above, see if it has been passed, or "chaptered." To search chaptered bills, start here and enter the year (2006) and the chapter number (433) which is noted on the history or status page. To find where it's been codified, look for the sentence "An act to add Section 9954 to the Vehicle Code, relating to vehicles" and find that section in the law itself There, you may not even realize it, but you just did a mini-version of a California legislative history.

Identity Theft
Identity theft is a topic that has gotten increasing amounts of attention in recent years due to the rise of new ways to perform transactions, especially on the internet. The damage caused has been increasing many fold as well. In the past, we were all told to protect our credit cards and checkbooks from thieves. It's not hard to figure out how they might be able to steal from you if they have your credit cards or checkbook. But now, with increasing use of Social Security numbers as identifiers, that too needs to be closely protected, as well as bank account numbers, and all manner of other personal information. There are 2 prime ways to be an identity theft victim: account takeover
This refers to the theft of existing bank or credit account information and the use of that information to complete purchases or obtain cash.

Consultants Working on Infamous Mississippi Racist's Murder Case
Trial consultants are working on both sides of the most widely covered civil rights trial in recent memory, sort of. That's right, according to this story in The Clarion Ledger, the Philadelphia, Mississippi trial of accused murder mastermind and Klan leader Edgar Ray Killen features jury consultants both sides. To quote the article directly: "In Tuesday's hearing, jury consultants aided prosecutors, but defense lawyers had help, too. "Edgar Ray says he's a jury consultant," Moran said. "He says he's done other cases." The prosecution has retained prominent jury consultant Andrew Sheldon , who has helped them out before. Court TV is also covering this story.
