A Country for All Seasons:

Lebanon is one of the few winter sports centers
in the Middle East and certainly the most extensive. The season begins in December and continues until April in a winter landscape unique
in the world. The larger resorts have hotels, chalets
and other facilities, including good ski lifts.
There are six winter resorts: The Cedars (2,300 meters), Faraya / Ouyoun Es-Siman (1,890 meters), Laqlouq
(1,740 meters), Faqra (1,750 meters), Qanat Bakiche (1,990 meters) and Zaarour (1.990 meters), Jabal Elchaik (2860 meters) In Lebanon you can swim in the sea
in winter as well as spring and an hour later ski at 1,900 meters. It almost never rains between June and October so in summer and autumn it is easy to go from sea to mountain, where another world awaits. Lebanon's mountain villages and towns are worth a visit any time of the year. While some were damaged by war most are thriving towns that offer not only entertainment but a glimpse of the traditional life style not often seen in large cities.
Lebanon (Lobnan) was given freedom in 1918 by the victory of the Allies and achieved full independence in 1943. Always a nation of travelers and traders, by the early 1970's there were some 2 million Lebanese living in their homeland while an almost equal number had settled in every continent of the world. After 1975 the war encouraged even larger numbers to emigrate to western and Arab countries where they have contributed their skills, notably in the fields of science, medicine and commerce. At home or abroad the Lebanese are known for their kindness and hospitality. These qualities, combined with family oriented way of life, make visitors feel both welcome and at ease.

HISTORY OF LEBANON After Wold War 1, France was given a League of Nations manate over Lebanon and its neighbour Syria, which together had previously been single political until the Ottoman Empire. France divided them in 1920 into seperate colonial administrations, drawing a border that separated predominantly Muslim and Christians were then dominant after 20 years of the France mandate regime Lebanon and the Frence National Committee of liberation, most of the powers exercised by France were transferred to the Lebanese Government on June 1 1944. The evacuation of France troops was completed in 1946.
According to the National Pact, diffrent religious communties are represnted in the government by having a Maronite Christian president, a Sunni Muslim prime minister. Civil war was broken out in 1958, with Muslims factions leb by Kammal Jumblat and Saed Salam rising in insurrection against the Lebanese government headed by President Camille Chamoun, a Maronite Christian favoring clse ties to the west. Clan warefare between various religious factions in Lebanon goes back centries. The hodge podge includes Maronite Christians, who since independence have dominate the government; Sunni Muslim, who have prosered in business and shared political power, the Druze, who hold a faith incorporating aspects of Islam and Gnosticism; and Shi'ite Muslims.
In the fighting between Lebanese factions, 40,000 Lebanese were estimated to have been killed and 100,000 wounded between March 1975 and November 1976.

History
Lebanon was the biblical 'land of milk and honey', and conquerors have always been attracted to its abundant natural resources, the safe anchorages on the coastline and the defensive possibilities of the high mountains. This has turned the country's history into a who's who of interlopers, pillagers and big-noters. The shores of Lebanon attracted settlers from about 10,000 BC onwards and by about 3000 BC, their villages had evolved into prototype cities. By around 2500 BC the coast had been colonised by people who later became known as the Phoenicians, one of the Mediterranean's greatest early civilisations. The Phoenicians never unified politically: they dominated as a result of enterprise and intellectual endeavour emanating from a string of independent city states. They ruled the sea with their superior vessels and navigational skills, were exceptional craftspeople, and created the first real alphabet. In the 9th century BC, the Assyrians clomped in, breaking the Phoenician's monopoly on Mediterranean trade. They yielded to the Neo-Babylonians, who were in turn overcome by the Persians (whom the Phoenicians regarded as liberators). The Phoenicians finally declined when Alexander the Great swept through the Middle East in the 4th century BC and Phoenicia was gradually Hellenised. In 64 BC, Pompey the Great conquered Phoenicia and it became part of the Roman province of Syria. Beirut became an important centre under Herod the Great and splendid temples were built at Baalbek.

A short history of Lebanese conflict :
The area now known as Lebanon first appeared in recorded history around 3000 B.C. as a group of coastal cities and a heavily forested hinterland. It was inhabited by the Canaanites, a Semitic people whom the Greeks called "Phoenicians". For Centuries, Lebanon was considered a district of the larger Ottoman Province of Syria.
After the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the areas of historical Mesopotamia and Syria were mandated to the British and French with the intention that they be returned to independence. By 1920, the French came to have a continuous stretch of territory extending from the Euphrates river to the Mediterranean coast. The British on the other hand, in addition to the whole of Mesopotamia, came to have mandate over all the areas southern to the vilayets of Damascus and Beirut, a territory which they first called the Palestine east and west of the Jordan ; then later Transjordan and Palestine However a Syrian nationalist movement was growing in Syria with the objective of independence from French colonial rule.

HISTORY
Lebanon is the historical home of the Phoenicians, Semitic traders whose maritime culture flourished there for more than 2,000 years (c. 2700-450 B.C.). In later centuries, Lebanon's mountains were a refuge for Christians, and Crusaders established several strongholds there. Following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire after World War I, the five Ottoman provinces that had comprised present- day Lebanon were mandated to France by the League of Nations. The country gained independence in 1943, and French troops werewithdrawn in 1946. Lebanon's history from independence can be defined largely in terms of its presidents, each of whom shaped Lebanon by a personal brand of politics: Sheikh Bishara al-Khoury (1943- 52), Camille Chamoun (1952-58), Fuad Shihab (1958-64), Charles Helou (1964-70), Suleiman Franjiyah (1970-76), Elias Sarkis (1976-1982), and Amine Gemayel (1982-88). From the end of the term of Amine Gemayel in September 1988 until the election of Rene Moawad in November1989, Lebanon had no president. The terms of the first two presidents ended in political turmoil. In 1958, during the last months of President Chamoun's term, an insurrection broke out, aggravated by external factors. In July 1958, in response to an appeal by the Lebanese Government, U.S. forces were sent to Lebanon. They were withdrawn in October 1958, after the inauguration of President Shihab and a general improvement in the internal and international aspects of the situation.

Lebanon History
Lebanon is a small country at the Eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. The Nature of Lebanon being distiguished from the mostly desert-countries surrounding it, along with the impact of the civilizations that inhabited Lebanon through thousands of years reached its peak in the second half of the 20th century, when Lebanon enjoyed prosperity, a free economy and the title of " Most Civilized and Democratic" country of the region.
The major Arab-Israeli conflict has found in Lebanon a landing on which to move the fight. Syrian, Palestinian and Israeli forces overtook the Lebanese territory moving their fight, since the 1970's to the neutral country, too small to defend herself. Syria, Iran, Israel, Lybia and Palestinians were sponsoring gorillas trying to take place in a battle that is not on their own land. Great destruction and hundreds of thousands of casualties (mostly Lebanese civilians) transpired in Lebanon . All the while, relatively minor events were going on in the neighbouring countries: Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Israel and the Palestinian territories. The UN Security Council issued several resolutions regarding Lebanon which were issued, but most of them were never enforced.

    Paper Abstract:
    Paper Introduction:

The situation in Lebanon has been difficult for some time and which continues to show internal strife, political discord, religious persecution, and the failure to achieve democratic reforms. The current situation developed over the history of the region and reflects some of the problems besetting much of the Middle East as well. Lebanon has a lengthy history in the Middle East and a heritage extending back nearly to the beginning of humankind. The region first appears in history in the time of the Phoenicians, around 3000 B.C., and it has been under the rule of Egypt, Assyria, Babylonia, the Persian Empire, the Ottoman Empire, and others over its long history (Countries of the World Chapter 1). Lebanon became an independent nation in 1943, and the first need was to establish a government that would enable

    Lebanon's History
Lebanon was part of the Ottoman Empire for over 400 years, but following World War I, the area became a part of the French Mandate of Syria. On September 1, 1926, France formed the Lebanese Republic. The Republic was afterward a separate entity from Syria but still administered under the French Mandate for Syria. Lebanon and Syria both gained independence in 1943, while France was occupied by Germany. Elections were held in 1943 and on November 8, 1943. The French reacted by throwing the new government into prison. In the face of international pressure, the French released the government officials on November 22, 1943 and accepted the independence of Lebanon. -read more history- Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lebanon -back- Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Trans-Europe

Are you making a trip to Lebanon and trying to find an international cell phone rental ? Finding an European cell phone can be hard, especially when you're traveling across the world . Next time you want global phones , look on the Internet first!
Lebanon lies in the eastern Mediterranean and covers about 4,033 square miles, smaller than Connecticut. From a narrow coastal strip, the land rises steeply to the Mount Lebanon range whose highest peak reaches 10,131 feet.
    (AP, 6/19/05)
Some Lebanese claim descent from the ancient Phoenicians. But Assyrians, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Crusaders, Mamelukes, Arabs and Ottoman Turks all ruled what is now Lebanon. The Lebanese lived under French rule after World War I, then gained independence in 1943. Christians dominated, but Muslim demands for reform helped trigger the 1975-90 civil war that killed 150,000. A 1989 Arab-brokered agreement ended the war. Israel withdrew in 2000. Syrian troops who came in near the start of the civil war finished their pullout on April 26, 2005.
