Hundredfold Farm Light Pollution Guidelines The beauty of the night sky is recognized as a valuable natural asset of the Hundredfold Farm community. As a community, we agree that a good night lighting policy strikes a balance between a number of important considerations, including but not limited to:
    • Ability to stargaze Affordability Energy conservation Hospitality Safety
As part of our shared value of sustainable living, we wish to conserve lighting energy. Energy-efficient lighting should be used when possible. There are three dimensions to the energy efficiency of lighting. First, the light source should produce adequate light efficiently, maximizing lumens and minimizing heat loss. Second, the light produced should be focused and aimed where needed. The purpose of each light source should be considered in the choice of shielding and shape of reflective components behind the bulb. Third, a light source should function at the times when needed. Timers and motion sensors can help in minimizing lighting at unnecessary times.

Solutions to Decrease
Light-Pollution Affecting Sea Turtles
There are ways that beach front property owners can modify their lights to prevent them from being seen from the beach. The following is a list of suggestions ( these solutions may need to be used in conjunction with one another in order to prevent sea turtle disorientation).
  • Turn off unnecessary lights. For lights that can be repositioned, face them away from the beach so that the light source is no longer visible. Shield the light source. Materials such as aluminum flashing can be used as a shield to direct light and keep it off the beach. When shielding lights, it is important to make sure they are shielded from all areas on the beach (including from either side and on top), and not just from the beach directly in front of the light. Black oven paint may be used as a temporary solution. Light sockets with an exposed light source (such as plain bulbs) should be replaced with fixtures that are specially made to recess and/or the light source should be shielded.

Light Pollution Makes Optical SETI Searches Harder
First Global Atlas Of Artificial Night Sky Brightness Shows How Humans Are Enveloping World In 'Luminous Fog'
About two thirds of the population of the world and 99% of people in the continental USA and western Europe never see a truly dark starry sky from where they live because of light pollution. Most of them cannot see the Milky Way and for many, the sky never gets darker than it would during natural twilight because so much artificial light brightens the atmosphere. These are just some of the statistics revealed in the First World Atlas of Artificial Night Sky Brightness by Dr Pierantonio Cinzano and Fabio Falchi (both of the University of Padua, Italy) and Dr Chris Elvidge (NOAA National Geophysical Data Center, Boulder, Colorado), which has recently been accepted for future publication in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. Although there has been general awareness of the growing problem of light pollution for a number of years, this is the first time that the artificial illumination of the night sky around the world has been properly quantified and related to where people live. The work of Dr Cinzano and his colleagues goes far beyond simple night-time images of the Earth. They started with data acquired in 1996-97 by the US Air Force Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) then calculated how artificial light is propagated through the atmosphere to arrive at a set of maps showing the extent and severity of light pollution around the world. These show that many areas that appear dark in night-time satellite images are in reality affected by light pollution caused by brightly lit neighbouring places.

Inside Out - North East: Monday January 24, 2005
LIGHT POLLUTION
Dark skies - is the sky at night getting brighter? Light pollution is getting worse with Teesside and Tyneside the worst affected areas outside London. They are also the fastest growing black spots in the country. The government promises action but environmental campaigners say it's too little. Inside Out takes a closer look at the North's skies at night. "There has been an increase in light pollution: there is no question about that. The issue is what we do about it."
Lord Rooker, Minister of State for Regeneration, 2003 Pitch black In the spotlight A quick tour of the region illustrates the extent of the problem from cities and towns to small villages. The County Durham village of Esh Winning looks bright even from a distance, a clue that light pollution may be a problem.

Clear Sky Clock for Peterborough, Ontario, Canada LATEST NEWS: Welcome to the PAA's new web site! Visit often for the latest club news and events...
Keeping our skies dark The Peterborough Astronomical Association is dedicated to preserving the night sky and is actively involved in lobbying municipalities and corporations to take steps to reduce"light-pollution" Light pollution is the effect that large-scale lighting - such as in most cities - has on our view of the stars at night. In addition to the work the PAA does through its light pollution committee, the club is also looking into involvement in Kawartha Highlands Park - about 40 minutes North of Peterborough - to have it designated a "dark sky reserve".

Light Pollution and Light Nuisance
Artificial light is used for a multitude of purposes. However, it is often the case that poorly designed, directed or maintained lighting can have undesirable effects through being too bright, badly aimed or switched on for too long and at inappropriate times.
What is light pollution?
Excessive light in urban areas can lead to something called ‘sky glow’ which wastes energy, disturbs the natural cycles of wild animals and birds and disrupts astronomers’ view of the stars.
What is light nuisance? In localised cases, excessive and poorly installed and maintained lighting can cause a nuisance to neighbouring occupiers. What can be done about it?

Light Pollution in Puerto Rico
By Armando Caussade.
Uploaded: December 31, 2004. Revised: December 31, 2004.
Light pollution is the artificial brightening of our nocturnal skies due to electrical lighting. This brightening degrades the visibility of stars and deep sky objects as to render them nearly invisible. The problem of light pollution is very widespread, affecting virtually every amateur astronomer living in an urban area today. Due in part to the island's high population density, the effects of light pollution are particularly severe. As apparent in figure 1, Puerto Rico is indeed the brightest patch of light throughout the Caribbean, except perhaps for the large urban areas of Florida. The island's semi-rectangular shape is easily discernible since about 90% of the coastline is illuminated by artificial lighting. Figures 1 and 2 are actual nocturnal photographs of the Earth's surface, obtained by satellite missions. Figure 1. City lights of the Caribbean
Source: NASA/GSFC Comments: This is a segment from the Earth's City Lights map Figure 2 is perhaps more revealing. Bright lights have encroached about half the island's area. The San Juan metropolitan area is visible as a bright patch to the northeast, extending almost fully to the eastern seaboard. The El Yunque rainforest is now the only remaining dark spot on this section of the island. On the western-interior part of Puerto Rico, running along the
