faculty includes the traditional core areas of phonetics, phonology, syntax, and semantics, as well as the interdisciplinary fields of psycholinguistics, language acquisition, and mathematical linguistics. The faculty also include specialists in African and Native American languages. The UCLA Phonetics Laboratory and the UCLA Psycholinguistics Laboratory are located in the department. About 10 students per year are admitted to the department's highly selective graduate program , which maintains a strong national ranking. The department also offers a rigorous and comprehensive undergraduate major , and teaches the fundamentals of linguistics to a large fraction of the UCLA undergraduates as part of the campus's general education program.

LINGUISTICS
Natural human language is powerful information technology and the crux of culture and civilization. The fundamental question of Linguistics is this: how is it that by emitting streams of buzzing, popping, and hissing noises from our mouths, we human beings are able to transmit thoughts, intentions, and knowledge of the world from one mind to another? While immersed in language every day, we are almost unaware of this extraordinary ability. When studied consciously, human language systems are revealed to be phenomena of great structural complexity and beauty. The Department of Linguistics at the University of Rochester is uniquely situated to address this fundamental question from many different viewpoints, giving rise to a dynamic atmosphere of dialogue and collaboration. While based in a core discipline of theoretical linguistics, we have close interdisciplinary relationships with experimental psycholinguists in Brain and Cognitive Sciences , and computational linguists in Computer Science , as well as with the departments of Philosophy and American Sign Language . These relationships are fostered by the Center for Language Sciences (CLS) , an interdepartmental research entity within the College . Collaboration takes place in the form of joint research, colloquia, shared facilities, and coursework.

What is Linguistics?
Linguistics at Swarthmore
Students learn linguistics at Swarthmore through interacting with the information and each other. Coursework and problem sets challenge students to develop their own insights and construct arguments supporting their claims. Professors guide the process, ultimately leading to a fuller understanding of linguistic theory than one could attain by absorbing theories presented in classes and texts. The community of learning is enhanced and expanded by the Linguistics Department's strong ties to Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges. Swarthmore Linguistics professors teach courses on all three campuses (though the vast majority are at Swarthmore), and linguistics courses regularly include students from all three schools.
Why study Linguistics?
The relevance of linguistics to the fields of anthropology, cognitive science, language study, philosophy, psychology, and sociology has been recognized for a long time. Linguistics crosslists courses from ten departments, reflecting the diversity of fields with strong relevance to our field. The interdisciplinary nature of the field, and our program, further encourages students to broaden their horizons and interact with a wide variety of students, scholars, and ideas.

What is the Funland? The Linguistic Funland was created in 1994 as a list of various linguistics links on a personal homepage. Then a graduate student in linguistics, the author began to accumulate a list of resources that soon grew out of a single page and into this directory. Here at the Funland, you'll find resources for language teaching and learning, linguistics study, and other miscellaneous resources. A Brief Introduction to Linguistics at Cornell
Language is at the center of almost every human activity. Yet producing and understanding even the simplest of sentences is one of the most complicated tasks that humans perform. Linguistics, the general study of language, attempts to answer the following questions: How do we produce and understand sentences? How is language acquired by children? What are the ways in which the languages of the world are alike and different? How do languages change over time? How does our ability to speak language compare to our other cognitive abilities? How is language used in different social and cultural contexts? Cornell offers full undergraduate and graduate programs in linguistics. The

Welcome to The Linguistics Department at Rice University!
Department Overview
The Rice Linguistics Department is the home of an active community of scholars with a wide range of interests. Broadly defined, the department adopts a functional, usage-based approach to language and linguistic theory. A number of recurrent themes emerge in faculty research and the degree programs offered: in-depth investigation of languages, coupled with the search for cross-linguistic generalization; the effects of semantics, language-in-use, sociocultural factors, and other functional influences that motivate and constrain linguistic form; grounding of theories in solid empirical data of many sorts; an interest in the relation between language and mind; and interest in discourse and social/communicative interaction more generally. These interests lead to intensive research activity in empirically well-supported theoretical and descriptive linguistics:
