The Department of Linguistics at the was founded in 1963 as an active research and teaching unit dedicated to the scientific study of language. A draft HISTORY of the Department by George Grace is posted on his personal web site. The faculty and students in the department are committed to understanding and explaining how language works - how it is acquired, how it is used, how it changes over time, how it is represented in the brain, and how threats to linguistic diversity can be addressed through documentation and conservation efforts. In carrying out this mission, the Department has a special focus on the languages of the vast Austronesian family (which includes the indigenous languages of Polynesia, Micronesia, Melanesia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Taiwan) and on the languages of Asia. The department makes use of the full range of methodologies appropriate for the investigation of human language, including the standard analytic techniques of linguistic theory and description, the methods of anthropology and ethnography, and the techniques of cognitive science , including psycholinguistic and neurolinguistic experimentation , computer modeling, and interdisciplinary research that seeks to situate language in the larger domain of cognition.

Home About Study People ... Donate Linguistics is the scientific study of human language, its structure and its diversity, how children learn it and how adults produce and understand it, how social practices shape and are shaped by it. The Department of Linguistics at the University of Colorado at Boulder is a major center of interdisciplinary research in cognitive-functional linguistics. It offers a wide range of research programs that jointly target properties of spoken language. The orientation of the department is empirical: our approach to the structure and use of language confronts theory with firsthand observations. Analysis of video- and audio-taped interactions, acoustic measurements of speech, computational and statistical data analysis, psycholinguistic experimentation and fieldwork abroad and in local communities all contribute to this enterprise.

Designed to revolutionize research and teaching by giving immediate access via the World Wide Web to more than 30,000 abstracts from nearly 400 linguistics journals published since 1985. Use Linguistics Abstracts Online to:
  • conduct quick, accurate and comprehensive research when writing papers
  • prepare teaching materials for students
  • compile bibliographies and check references
"This is a truly excellent way of keeping up with the literature in my area. I needed to know what had been published recently on the topic of a paper I am currently writing ...and was able to find several references I might otherwise have missed."
Peter Ladefoged, UCLA "I find the quality of the abstracts very high and both the choice and range of material abstracted to be exactly what I need."

Welcome! Language is an essential part of our life. Nothing characterizes humanity more than the ability to use language. Linguists analyze sounds, words, sentences, and texts. Linguists also make valuable contributions to practical fields such as K-12 teaching, second and foreign language teaching, language planning, translation, computer science, forensic linguistics, and language disorders. Our degrees and programs develop intellectual skills that are essential to professional careers or advanced degrees. http://linguistics.wwu.edu/
Western Linguistics Program
Linguistics, the science of language, is an interdisciplinary field which relates to the diversity of the cultures and languages of the world. It is an integral part of most serious pursuits dealing with aspects of language study and/or analysis. As the boundaries of the world change, an understanding of individual languages and cultures becomes increasingly more important. Communication in this complex society requires knowledge of the workings of languages as well as their interrelationship with their respective cultures. All linguistics majors are expected to acquire a rudimentary knowledge of the functions of language at various levels and knowledge of the techniques/methods used in language analysis. A student of linguistics will thereby significantly advance his/her appreciation of linguistic and cultural diversity.
