EACH ONE, TEACH ONE
The Laubach program of adult literacy stands out because it has a clear mandate and method. The learner-based program means that the student's own learning objectives are all important in determining the content, method, and outcome of instruction. Learning is done in a sheltered, low-stress environment that is comforting and supportive to a later learner who may suffer from low self-esteem.
The teaching program is well organized and has numerous and diverse teaching aids to assist both the student and the tutor. Tutors are volunteer members of the community teaching other members of their community, supported by our local volunteer council.

Aries Computer Fundamentals / Version 5.0:
  • Computer Fundamentals Guide
Students who enter the Aries Computer Fundamentals Curriculum do not need prior experience with computers. Along with a structured series of lessons, workbook exercises accompany each lesson. Note : the computer lessons serve as introductory material, but mastery requires hands on practice and drill By the end of the course, students will be computer literate enough for the IC exam. They will be able to find their way around the computer, do some troubleshooting, and communicate with computer technicians. The Student Guide provides background, simulations for review, web resources, and supplemental activities for further mastery.
  • Acceptable Use Policies (AUP)
Significant differences exist between information created and stored on an individual's own home computer and data that is created and stored on a computer owned by a school, company, or other information. Thus, legal rules restricting and governing use on institutional/company computers are to be expected. Users are obligated to know and follow these rules and should ask the system administrator or computer lab instructor for them. Larger institutions and companies may have these available on their web site.

Guided Reading
Background:
Four Blocks Literacy Model
and the seminal book by Guided Reading: Good First Teaching for All Children
Explanation:
Guided Reading is appropriate for any level although most often associated with the beginning reader. Descriptive elements of the Guided Reading instructional technique include:
2. The teacher selects and introduces a book (or segment) that students have not previously seen that is at their instructional level (read with 90-94% accuracy). Identifying appropriately leveled books/materials is a key preparatory step to Guided Reading. 4. Students respond in reflective discussion as a group. 5. The teacher conducts a teacher-led mini lesson for focused exploration: phonic concept, vocabulary, story structure 6. Books are set aside to reserve for student rereading. In many classrooms, the student takes the book

I am a first year (lateral entry - meaning no student teaching experience) first grade teacher. I am having problems trying to find ideas and activities for the literacy centers that are needed in the Houghton Mifflin reading series.
I appreciate any advice that is offered.
- Jim czacza 09-16-2007, 02:59 PM Here's a link for some literacy center ideas. Hopefully they go with your HM series. If not, 'Make it work'!! jimkline 09-16-2007, 04:00 PM Unfortunately, czacza, there isn't a link in your post.
Thanks for the reply though. 09-16-2007, 06:53 PM Do you have the teacher's manual? They have a lot of ideas in there. (How did you not do student teaching...just curious?) jimkline 09-17-2007, 02:27 PM I do teachingmomof4 and I just got back form a nice chat with my literacy coach/mentor so that helped a lot.
Well, I am a lateral entry teacher, meaning I have three years to complete the classwork necessary to gain my full license, without doing student teaching. It's for career changers, and those who knew they were going to teach all along, but just didnt get a 4 year degree for it. czacza 09-17-2007, 07:40 PM

Ms. Powell's Message Boards Many visitors email me with questions they have about implementing my suggestions. They often have fantastic ideas of their own that they want to incorporate. I wanted to provide a place for visitors to share the ways they have tailored my strategies for their own classrooms, and to bounce ideas off one another. If you have made one of my ideas your own, or have a question about how to do so, please post below! I am automatically emailed whenever someone posts, so I can respond to any questions you have. Sometimes people ask questions that I don't have experience with, so if you don't see a reply from me within a few days, that's probably why! Other teachers will step up and help you out, though. This can be a great way for us to exchange ideas about classroom management! Thanks for sharing! Ms. Powell
