http://homepages.ius.edu/NHBREWER/06GinaFinnell.asp
My name is Gina Finnell and I am a Reading Recovery® teacher and literacy teacher leader at Price Elementary in Jefferson County. This is my eighth year of teaching, and second year teaching Reading Recovery® students. Problem Statement: The problem that I have chosen to focus on and research is implementing meaningful literacy centers/stations with first grade students . I do not currently have a classroom (Reading Recovery® works with small groups of students one on one), but help classroom teachers implement literacy activities in their classrooms. I chose to focus my research in first grade classrooms because of the importance of establishing solid literacy foundations and skills at this grade and development level. In the past, I have been a bit discouraged to find that many literacy centers, including my own, were just busy work, meant to keep students occupied while the teacher was teaching a guided reading lesson to other students. My focus of research was to find meaningful literacy lessons that would make students accountable for the work completed in that station or center. Education Questions and Answers
Any pointers on how to best homeschool a young child?
Question: What is the best way to teach a child to read, write, and do basic kindergarten/first grade math?
Answers:
leap frog makes fridge magnets that fit into a base
that will play a song identifying the letter and give the sound or sounds that letter makes. I credit my child's early reading (very fluent and advanced at three) to these.
(copy and paste from a previous answser I gave to a similar question)
make liberal use of your local library.
observe shapes in everyday items.
spread rice or flour over a baking sheet and use his finger to trace letters, numbers and shapes.
teach him to count using toys, then after he's learned his numbers to twenty you can teach place values using dried beans and popscicle sticks. count out 10 together and glue them to a popsicle stick. do this 10 times and you show that 10 tens are one hundred, and you can graphically represent for him all the numbers under 100.
cook together
play games together play store and put prices on things, then give him that many pennies when you "shop" for toys in his room/"toystore"

Home Safe Search Engines for Kids Sites for Teachers For Parents Birthday Book Club Battle of the Books ... STLP for Primary Students Our school district encourages the use of varied approaches for reading instruction.
The following reading strategies are the basis of Guided Reading. Parents and teachers may utilize them when reading with children.
Tell the child to look at the picture. You may tell the child the word is something that can be seen in the picture, if that is the case.
Tell the child to look for chunks in the word, such as it in sit, at in mat, or and and ing in standing.
Ask the child to get his/her mouth ready to say the word by shaping the mouth for the beginning letter.
Ask the child if the word looks like another word s/he knows. Does bed look like red?, for example.
Ask the child to go on and read to the end of the sentence. Often by reading the other words in context, the child can figure out the unknown word.
If the child says the wrong word while reading, ask questions like:
Does it make sense?

because I have found them so useful- I hope you do, too!

Email: Subscribe Unsubscribe Visitors since 7/03: var sc_project=616161; var sc_partition=3; var sc_security="ee97c009"; What to do if you click on a link and get an error message: Ever clicked on a link you couldn't WAIT to see only to get an error message- page not found? How disappointing! But you may have some recourse. Here's how: Many links are 'deep links'- that means they don't link just to the home page (like mspowell.com) but to one of the pages 'inside' the site (such as mspowell.com/behavior.html). If a link doesn't work, try deleting the end of it (everything BEFORE the first slash mark) and just going to the home page. Many times, the site or even the page isn't really gone- the webmaster just renamed the page or mistyped the link. By visiting the homepage, you can often navigate your way back to the page you were looking for. Happy hunting! Examples: If this link doesn’t work… See if this could be a working home page...
