Basic approaches to writing up the review
What is a Literature Review?
The term literature review can refer either to an activity carried out and reported upon as part of an assignment (such as an essay, or research report), or to a particular type of essay. In relation to the first of these two meanings, many assignments will require the writer to locate, read and discuss writings on one or more topics. This review of the relevant literature will then serve as the background against which to consider important issues, report on the data gathered, etc. However, for some assignments you may be asked to review the various writings and research on a particular topic as the major focus of the assignment. In this case, you will need to identify the key literature, carefully evaluate and thoroughly discuss this literature, and to develop some conclusions about it, and about the topic itself. The aim of including a literature review as a part of an assignment is not only to encourage you to read the latest literature and to find out more about what happens in the "real world". This type of assignment also is designed to give you practice in using a problem-solving method that it is hoped that you may continue to use in your work settings when it is appropriate.

Reforming the Fourth Estate: The Future of Media Literature Review
All of this is particularly scary in our postmodern age, which is so saturated with images and sound bites that there is no escape from mediation. If global media is a crucial node in the current heteropolar political landscape, as this course has argued, then the question of who controls the media is a direly urgent one. If media has the power to compete with governments in mobilizing political action and influencing our values and principles, then what happens when the media falls into the hands of an elite few, driven solely by the interests of free market capital?
The authors of The Future of Media clearly anticipated in 2005 that the fight for media reform was far from over; the book is presented not as a commemoration of the successes of 2003 but as a primer for concerned citizens and future activists. The back of the book features a 70-page media reform action guide, with step-by-step guides to filing complaints with the F.C.C., monitoring local media outlets, organizing like-minded individuals, and other levels of activism. This call to action echoes what many see as the key strength of alternative news gathering on the internet: putting authority over information into the hands of the people that that information is supposed to serve. In our era of media conglomerates, we need individuals and local groups to keep an eye on policy and production/distribution institutions in the same way that blogs monitor the mainstream news. In order to preserve the fourth estate, we need a grassroots fifth estate to mediate the media.

Interdisciplinary Literature Review: Humor in Odessa
Students are preparing grant proposals, and literature reviews are becoming an issue again. I want to share the literature review produced by Eugenie Kim and Alex Lerner for their grant to do research on humor in Odessa. This is very well done, but what is also interesting is the fact that the project is interdisciplinary, combining methdologies from social science and humanities as part of one project. Very neat, and something to learn from. Take a look: In Search of Humor: Myth and Memory in Modern Odessa
Isaac Babel Background The chaotic jumble of diverse voices and foreign tongues that resonated in the streets of this cosmopolitan port city made Odessa an incarnation of the biblical Tower of Babel. In the Odessan tradition of felicitous irony it is perhaps fitting, then, that the singular figure who ascended to embody and immortalize the legendary wit of Odessa was none other than Isaac Babel. Building on the homespun satires of Sholem Aleichem, Babel both distilled and disseminated the consciously wry and self-deprecating wit that typified the celebrated Odessan sensibility. Isaac Newton A literature review is an account of what has been published on a topic by accredited scholars and researchers. Your review should provide clear justification for why you are researching your topic, and should demonstrate that you have investigated the current literature. A literature review is not just a descriptive list of the material available, or a summary of your search results.
Besides enlarging your knowledge about the topic, writing a literature review demonstrates your skills in two areas:

Volume 14 Number 2 Spring 2001 Newsletter spa@societyhq.com Literature Reviews Clinical Predictors of Anaesthetic Complications in Children with Respiratory Track Infections (RTI) Paediatric Anaesthesia Summary Data was obtained from 2,051 children with a mean age 5.8 years. Interestingly, the prevalence of children having a history of RTI in previous six weeks, living with a smoker, or snoring at night were all 46%. Twenty-two percent reported one or more symptom consistent with an RTI and 24% of children were reported by their parents to have a "cold" on the day of surgery. Twenty-two percent of all patients had at least one intraoperative complication. Step-wise logistic regression yielded eight final variables that could be considered useful predictors of an adverse event. The following variables were predictive of an adverse event: 1. Tracheal intubation as compared to face mask or LMA.

Because the majority of chlamydial infections are asymptomatic, screening is vital in detecting infection. Chlamydia trachomatis diagnostic assays continue to evolve and currently, nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) have been shown to be the most sensitive assays. The basis for the higher sensitivity of NAATs over non-amplified assays is that the amplification in NAATs facilitates the detection of a much lower load of chlamydial organisms (measured as inclusion-forming unit [IFU] counts with cell culture). Prior studies have demonstrated that C. trachomatis

This study describes the blinded comparison of the presence of vaginal neutrophils detected by Gram stain or saline wet mount with the histological evaluation of an endometrial biopsy for the diagnosis of endometritis in high risk women without symptoms. Participants
Five hundred thirty-seven women, aged 15 to 30 years, attending an urban STD clinic, two ambulatory gynecology clinics, and two community-based primary care clinics in Pittsburgh, PA, were tested. Community Development Research Methods: A Community-Based Approach to Social Research COD 680 Fall 2005 Tips for Literature Reviews
COD 680 Students: Several of you have asked for more guidance in your literature reviews. Here are some issues to think about and recommendations that I have pulled from others and derived from my own experience. I hope that this proves helpful. John Green Information sources include – How It’s Done: An Invitation to Social Research . Belmont, CA: Thomson/Wadsworth. Bruce, C.S. 2001. Research students’ early experiences of the dissertation literature review. Pp. 70-77 in Research Methods Stringer, E. T. 1999. Action Research. 2nd Edition. Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage Publications. It is important to understand that a literature review, in the context of a research project, serves to provide a framework for the study. It seeks to describe, summarize and synthesize a body of literature (see Bruce, 1994 for a discussion of definition) and relates the literature to the study at hand. I do not subscribe to the idea that there is some sort of “best recipe” for a literature review. (Pardon the food analogies, but I cannot help myself.) Instead, my view is that each researcher/research team must make their own decisions about what to “cook” and the appropriate “recipe” for them. (We all have different tastes.) For some people, it is best to use an instant mix, while others prefer to be more adventurous.
