Timberdoodle
Photo: Courtesy of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
Normal people are asleep at 4:30 AM. Normal people stay under the covers on Sunday mornings when the temperature reads 28 degrees.
Warren and I met some of the members of our local birding club at 4:30 AM this morning in search of the American Woodcock (AKA Timberdoodle).
The American Woodcock is a particularly cool bird which is rarely seen during the day because they are mostly silent and their plumage blends in perfectly with dead leaves.
In the spring, however, the male American Woodcock puts on quite a show to attract females. Plural female. Woodcocks are polygamous and in the battle to ensure his DNA is spread thick, the male starts the morning or ends the day by repeating a nasal, somewhat mechanical "peent" sound from the ground.
He then performs a spiraling flight display. As the Woodcock ascends, his wing feathers produce a twittering sound. He hovers for a bit and then begins to chirp as he dives toward the ground, landing silently next to a female, where he will once again "peent".
Very stirring! We witnessed it all as the sun rose and the full moon set and a Barred Owl called from across the marsh.

Love Birds
Today was a good one for birding on the way to the bus stop. Leaving my house I saw a ~2 year old eagle flapping southbound. It had a clear white triangular patch, but no bald head or tail yet. I think its beak was malformed, which might be caused by an Aspergillosis infection.
Then as I tu rned onto the Burke-Gilman Trail, I noticed first the meooow of a towhee, and then a strangely quiet Stellar's jay investigating the poor towhee's nest. I tried to scare the nest-robber, but was unsuccessful. Then, up on the ridge, I noticed a flicker performing its duties as mornin g alarm clock. It was rat-a-tatting on the steel cover of someone's chimney. I can't blame it for findi ng a perfect drum! Then strolling past some plum trees, I was shadowed by a flock of bushtits.
And to think that I complain about the long 74 bus ride. If I didn't take that bus, I would miss out on some of nature's drama! Posted by thomas at 12:26 PM Labels: birds working early

Lovebirds
By John C. Tyson
The lovebird's natural color is green, but captive breeding has produced a variety of colorful combinations. There are nine recognized varieties of these resplendent little birds, including the peach-faced, Fisher's and masked. Selecting a hand-fed baby may prevent future problems as adult lovebirds can be difficult to tame. Care must be taken to provide your exotic pet with a variety of stimulating toys and the proper diet. These charming birds are easily bred in the proper environment. The name lovebird describes the persona this species portrays to anyone observing the appearance and social behavior of this small parrot. Their closeness to each other and their constant preening shows how they acquired the name lovebird. They are small, colorful, pocket size birds originating from Africa and the island of Madagascar. They measure only five to six inches in length. All lovebirds belong to the genus Agapornis . In the wild the lovebird's natural color is green, but in captivity the lovebird is bred in a wide array of mutated colors. Lutinos, yellows, whites, blues, cinnamons, reds, pieds, and various combinations of these colors display some of the most vivid and beautiful feather colorations. Color mutations in lovebirds are extremely attractive and are prized by many. You can expect to pay a much higher price for a beautiful mutated lovebird than you would for a common or normal-colored bird. However, the coloration of the lovebird in no way affects the quality of the pet.

(Photo: Alyson Aliano) To see the great pandemonium at Dirty Bird is to wonder whether New Yorkers have always been closet fried-chicken freaks, waiting for a better excuse than Popeyes to indulge. Allison Vines-Rushing, with her slow-food approach to fast food, her organic seasonal vegetables, and her natural, free-range fryers, as her press materials tell us, is just that.

    30 September 2007
She never told the truth and he couldn't trust the sun at noon.
He logged the miles on their little yellow Volvo, plotting her range on maps he kept in a secret box on a high shelf. He arrived for unpredictable, scrutinizing lunch breaks to watch her face as he opened the door. Obsessive love filled composition books, then encrypted text files buried in backwater directories of their home computer. Every unguarded reaction, every quirk of mouth and cast of eye, was sketched and compared to the blossoming record of their marriage.
After his surprise lunches, she would drop off the fire escape and cross alleys and backyards to the public library in the next town. She sent off meticulously crafted tales of imaginary woe to old high school boyfriends, pounding the emails out so quickly from memory the librarians feared for the state of their keyboards. All the while, thinking: he left at one o'clock, heading north, feeling a just-so balance of relief and skepticism...
She knew every turn of his thought. In her encyclopedic, liar's mind she kept a little simulation of her husband, to test her stories. Every unobserved hour she spoke to the copy, refining her tale for the real man's return.
They passed their lives together, the most attentive marriage I've ever known.

By Goda Thangada PUBLISHED JANUARY 23, 2008 The title of the anthology My Mistress’ Sparrow is Dead may be mystifying, but author Jeffrey Eugenides, in his introduction, reminds us that the most famous dead sparrow in literature belonged to Clodia—a.k.a Lesbia—the lover of Catullus. Eugenides believes that Catullus was the first author to write extensively about a single love affair, encapsulating his feelings and experience into a body of poetry. Explaining its link to the anthology he collected and edited himself, Eugenides charmingly quips, “Read these love stories in the safety of your single bed. Let everybody else suffer.” At best, the stories are bittersweet rather than mockingly bitter or sappily sweet, running across full spectrums of emotions belonging to a diverse pool of tortured, earnest lovers. Eugenides professes, much as Boccaccio did, that because the anthology offers vicarious experiences of love, it is “a cure for lovesickness and an antidote for adultery.” This is a hefty promise, and it would be a miracle if the book could truly accomplish such a thing.
