COPING WITH
LUNG CANCER This page Is In memory of Dave Grant
When I was told I had lung cancer in April of 2006, I couldn't comprehend what it meant. I didn't believe this could be happening to me. It wasn't because I thought I was immune to cancer, I just never thought I'd have it in my lungs as I had never smoked a day in my life. My pulmonary doctor and surgeon told me that more people are being diagnosed daily with lung cancer who have never smoked, with 20% of that being women. It is the No. 1 cancer killer among women.
I had four treatments of Taxotere and Carboplatin over a 12 week period. The first week after each treatment was the worst, the second week was fatigue and loss of appetite, the third week I was feeling more energetic .. just in time for another treatment. The steroid, Decadron, was given with each treatment to help the side effects. Since my treatments, I have had good CTscans and in May of 2007, I was a one-year lung cancer survivor.
I have joined the LCA Survivors Community Forum for support and information from other patients like myself. Like my Myasthenia Gravis support group, this is a place to ask questions from people who have been through the surgery, chemo, and other treatments and can give you their personal answers to your questions or concerns. This great forum was founded by Dave Grant of Wisconsin who was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2001. Dave courageously lost the battle to lung cancer on February 14, 2007.
I have done alot of research about lung cancer since my diagnosis.. I found out there is not alot of money funded for lung cancer research and it's treatment due to the stigma of smoking attached to it. The 'powers that be' say we caused our illness, why help treat it? Well for those like myself who never smoked, this is not fair. There is more evidence today that 20% of the women diagnosed with lung cancer never smoked. I have written my congressmen to help support more funding for research. A 65% five-year survival rate for the 2nd earliest stage of lung cancer is unacceptable, graded a F.

This results in a version which is no Bayesian Net, because it makes use of probability intervals and makes no assumption about marginal independences.
Please note that the answer to the queries is not unique. Even if you choose exact probabilities in the statements instead of intervals, there exist probability models (i.e. probability measures fulfilling the database constraints) for most probability values of the queries.
The task of PIT is to find the best answer.
This means in our context the answer based on that probability model which adds only a minimum of knowledge to the database. For this task PIT uses the principle of Maximum Entropy (resp. minimum information).

    Evolutionary Design and Lego(tm) Blocks
Pablo Funes of Brandeis University has done a lot of work in the area of evolutionary design. As part of his research he has built experimental systems that evolve structures of Lego(tm) blocks that meet various design goals. The Lego(tm) blocks are an excellent experimental domain because they are modular units that are constrained almost entirely by the number of join points between two blocks. The model of the blocks then is a model of the joints, and how much stress a joint between two blocks can stand.

    Disease Background
Description of the Disease There are several forms of lung cancer. Some originate in the cells of the lungs while others spread (metastasize) to the lung from different parts of the body. Of the cancers that originate in the lung, there are two major types that are identified by how the cells appear under a microscope. The most common form is non-small cell lung cancer, which generally grows and spreads relatively slowly. There are three main types of non-small-cell lung cancer. They are named for the type of cells in which the cancer develops: squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma and large-cell carcinoma. Small-cell lung cancer, sometimes called oat-cell cancer, is less common than non-small-cell lung cancer, grows more quickly and is more likely to spread to other organs in the body. Each type of lung cancer is treated differently.

    Lung cancer
This factsheet is for people who have lung cancer or for people who would like information about lung cancer. Lung cancer is the most common cancer in the world. Around 1.3 million new cases are diagnosed every year globally. In the UK, lung cancer is responsible for the most deaths due to cancer; in 2004 this was a total of over 26,000 people. Most lung cancers are smoking-related. Cancer - a general overview animation The Flash plug-in is required to view this animation
    The lungs
Your lungs are around your heart in your chest cavity (the thorax) and consist of spongy tissue with a rich blood supply. Air goes from your nose and mouth, and passes into the trachea (windpipe) and into each lung, through two airways called the bronchi. These divide into smaller airways, called bronchioles, which divide again and end in alveoli. These are air sacs with walls just one cell thick. It's here that oxygen and carbon dioxide can filter into and out of the blood. In this process, known as gaseous exchange, molecules of oxygen and carbon dioxide bind to haemoglobin, one of the components of blood.

    Lung Cancer Stages
By Steve Valentino Cancers are staged depending on how far they have spread. Staging a cancer correctly is essential to select the most appropriate treatment option. A number of diagnostic tests, such as CT scans, MRIs, bronchoscopy, blood tests, bone scans, and biopsies are used to find out how far the cancer has spread.
Non-small cell lung cancers, which account for about 80 percent of lung cancers, are staged using the Roman numerals through IV. If a cancer is too small to be detected, it is called an occult or hidden cancer and not assigned any numeral. Stage cancer, or carcinoma in situ, is limited to the lung and only involves a few
layers of cells. Stage I cancer is still limited to the lung, with an area of normal tissue surrounding it. Stage I cancers are further divided into Stage IA and Stage IB, depending on the size of the tumor. In stage II cancer, the cancer may have spread to nearby lymph nodes, the chest wall, the diaphragm, or to the tissues lining the lung (pleura) and the heart (pericardium). In stage III cancer, lymph nodes in the central chest or on the other side of the body from the original tumor are involved. Stage III cancer is further divided into stage IIIA and stage IIIB. In stage IV cancer, the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, such as the liver, bones or brain, or to a lobe of the other lung. Cancers that are stages through IIIA may be treated with surgery. Treatment of stage III and stage IV cancers requires chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
