Advanced treatment for lung cancer... with your safety in mind. More than one in four of all diagnosed cancers involve the lung, and lung cancer remains the most common cancer-related cause of death among American men and women. Yet, if lung cancer is detected early enough, radiation therapy can be effective in shrinking lung tumors prior to surgery or as an alternative to surgical removal. At Kerville Cancer Center, we use 3D Conformal radiation therapy (3DCRT) to apply low radiation doses to lung tumors. Because lung tumors often have erratic, disorganized shapes, 3DCRT offers the optimal dose to tumor cells (which don't recover) and surrounding normal tissue cells (which do recover). Also, 3DCRT's short treatment durations minimize exposure to normal tissue, which is important because lung tumors move with respiration. Typically, lung cancer involves both tumors and cancer cells that are not arranged in a tumor mass. That’s why, at Kerrville Cancer Center, we work closely with medical oncologists to coordinate radiation therapy and chemotherapy for the best results and minimal risk to you or your loved one. Wiki: Lung cancer Ad: Stay in touch on your phone, FREE! Lung cancer is a disease of uncontrolled cell growth in tissues of the lung . This growth may lead to metastasis , invasion of adjacent tissue and infiltration beyond the lungs. The vast majority of primary lung cancers are carcinomas of the lung , derived from epithelial cells. Lung cancer , the most common cause of cancer-related death in men and the second most common in women, [1] [2] is responsible for 1.3 million deaths worldwide annually. [3] In the UK, it is the most common site of fatal cancer in both men and women. The most common symptoms are shortness of breath, coughing (including coughing up blood ), and weight loss. [4] The main types of lung cancer are small cell lung carcinoma and non-small cell lung carcinoma . This distinction is important because the treatment varies; non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) is sometimes treated with surgery , while small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) usually responds better to chemotherapy and radiation. [5] The most common cause of lung cancer is long term exposure to tobacco smoke . [6] The occurrence of lung cancer in non-smokers, who account for fewer than 10% of cases, appears to be due to a combination of

Lung cancer in women
Is lung cancer different in women? Yes and no. Lung cancer has received some much-needed attention recently, thanks largely to two admired public figures. In April 2005, ABC news anchorman Peter Jennings told his nightly audience of millions that he had been diagnosed with lung cancer. Four months later, he died of the disease. Soon afterward came word that actress Dana Reeve, the widow of actor Christopher Reeve, had been diagnosed with lung cancer that would claim her life in March 2006. At age 44, Reeve was more than 20 years younger than the average age at which most lung cancers are discovered. Women and men share the same risk factors, the greatest of which is exposure to tobacco smoke. But among nonsmokers, more women than men develop the disease. Researchers have also found that women, especially nonsmokers, tend to respond better to certain therapies. Women and men tend to get different forms of the disease; understanding these differences should improve diagnosis and treatment in both sexes.

Font Font disease cancer kills more women every year than breast cancer, and will kill more than 70,000 women every year in the United States. The fact is 90% of all lung cancer deaths among women are from smoking. Everyone knows the dangers of smoking today, yet 1 out of 5 women in the United States are still smoking. Even if a woman has been smoking for years, it is still beneficial in lowering the risk of cancer for her to quit. In a study from The Journal of the American Medical Association, it was revealed that women that smoke are two times more likely to get lung cancer than men. When we think about lung cancer many times we assume that smoking is the cause, but it should be noted that 15 percent of all lung

Positron emission tomography (PET)-computed tomography (CT) suggesting small intestinal metastasis from lung cancer; report of a case Kyobu Geka 2006 May; 59(5): 426-9 ( Read article online Shiono S, Masaoka T, Sato T, Yanagawa N A 75-year-old man admitted to our hospital due to an abnormal X-ray shadow detected during an annual health check-up. Chest computed tomography (CT) revealed 3.0 cm solid nodules with chest wall invasion in the left lung. We could not get a definitive diagnosis by transbronchial lung biopsy or CT-guided needle biopsy. Positron emission tomography (PET)-CT revealed positive findings in the tumor, aortopulmonary window lymph node and splenic flexure. Under a diagnosis of suspected lung cancer, thoracotomy was performed. As intraoperative diagnosis revealed a moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, the patient underwent a left upper lobectomy, mediastinal lymph node dissection, and combined chest wall resection. Pathological stage was T3N2M0, stage IIIA. Ten days after surgery, the patient suffered from ileus and emergent surgery was performed. Subsequent pathological examination revealed lung cancer metastasis in the small intestine.

Smoking Takes Harsh Toll on Women

Introduction
Lung cancer is a cancer of the lungs characterized by the presence of malignant tumours . Most commonly it is bronchogenic carcinoma (about 90%). Lung cancer is the most lethal of cancers worldwide, causing up to 3 million deaths annually. Only one in ten patients diagnosed with this disease will survive the next five years. Although lung cancer was previously an illness that affected predominately men, the lung cancer rate for women has been increasing in the last few decades, which has been attributed to the rising ratio of female to male smokers. More women die of lung cancer than any other cancer, including breast cancer ovarian cancer and
