MeSH Systemic lupus erythematosus SLE or lupus ) is a chronic autoimmune disease that can be fatal, though with recent medical advances, fatalities are becoming increasingly rare. As with other autoimmune diseases , the immune system attacks the body’s cells and tissue, resulting in inflammation and tissue damage. SLE can affect any part of the body, but most often harms the heart joints skin lungs ... kidneys and nervous system . The course of the disease is unpredictable, with periods of illness (called flares) alternating with remission. Lupus can occur at any age, and is most common in women, particularly of non-European descent. Lupus is treatable symptomatically , mainly with corticosteroids and immunosuppressants , though there is currently no cure. Survival in patients with SLE in the United States, Canada and Europe is approximately 95% at 5 years, 90% at 10 years, and 78% at 20 years.

What is lupus?
s ystemic lupus erythematosus (ur-uh-thee-muh-TOH-suhss) or SLE. This is the most common type of lupus. Studies suggest that more than 16,000 new cases are reported annually across the country. Although lupus can affect almost any organ system, the disease, for most people, affects only a few parts of the body. For example, one person with lupus may have swollen knees and fever. Another person may be tired all the time or have kidney trouble. Someone else may have rashes. Normally, lupus develops slowly, with symptoms that come and go. Women who get lupus most often develop symptoms and are diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 45. But the disease also can develop in childhood or later in life. For most people, lupus is a mild disease. But for others, it may cause serious problems. Even if your lupus symptoms are mild, it is a serious disease that needs treatment. It can harm your organs and put your life at risk if untreated.

Medical Editor: William C. Shiel Jr., MD, FACP, FACR So many people have had comments like, "I had no idea Susan was so sick." That was because Susan did not want anybody to know. Because lupus is such a crafty disease and flies under the general public's radar, this is a good opportunity to clear things up. Lupus is an autoimmune disease, not an infectious disease like HIV . People with lupus have an overactive immune system. The body's defenses actually attack healthy tissue. This has been happening to Susan for 30 years or more. She was diagnosed around 1990, but she had symptoms way before then. Originally, the disease would manifest itself as

Chantelle was having a rough morning. Her hands were so stiff that she could barely dial the combination on her locker. Then she couldn't move her fingers well enough to play her clarinet. It seemed that ever since marching band practice had started in the early summer, her hands and feet felt sore in the mornings. She was also tired all the time, and no matter how much she rested, she still felt sleepy and achy all over. Chantelle told her doctor about her achy hands and feet and how she felt tired all the time. The doctor sent her for blood tests. A few days later, the doctor called and told Chantelle's dad that she might have lupus.
What Is Lupus?
Lupus (pronounced: loo -pus) is a disease that involves the immune system and affects about 1.5 million Americans; nearly 90% of those diagnosed with the disease are female. Normally, a person's immune system works by producing immunity cells and antibodies , special substances that fight germs and infections. But when a person has lupus, his or her immune system goes into overdrive and can't tell the difference between some of the body's normal, healthy cells and germs that can cause infection. So the immune system responds by making

      Does Stress Affect Lupus?
Medical Author: William C. Shiel Jr., MD, FACP, FACR
Medical Editor: Leslie J. Schoenfield, MD, PhD Let's start by discussing what is meant by stress. Stress means different things to different people based on their backgrounds and their current emotional and physical condition. For some people, milk spilling on the table causes a major emotional reaction. To others, a tank rolling through the living room might be viewed as just another life experience! For the purpose of this topic, I will define stress as human reactions to forces that tend to disturb our normal functional (physiologic) balance (equilibrium). Stress, in this general sense, refers to any adverse condition or state that affects our normal well-being. Such stress can be imposed on us by, for example, work, a spouse, other people, ourselves, or by setting our daily schedule too rigorously. Read about stress' indirect effects on lupus disease
      Lupus Overview
Systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus, SLE) is an autoimmune disease in which a person's immune system attacks various organs or cells of the body causing damage and dysfunction. Lupus is called a multisystem disease because it can affect many different tissues and organs in the body. Some patients with lupus have a very mild condition, which can be treated with simple medications, whereas others can have serious, life-threatening complications. Lupus is more common in women than men, and its peak incidence is after puberty—the reason for this is unknown.

    • Lupus affects 10 times as many women as men. Treatment depends on the type and severity of symptoms you experience. Given its complex nature, lupus requires treatment by a rheumatologist and your own active participation in maintaining your health.
    What lupus is
Systemic lupus erythematosus (also called SLE or lupus) is a chronic inflammatory disease that can affect the skin, joints, kidneys, lungs, nervous system, and/or other organs of the body. The most common symptoms include skin rashes and arthritis, often accompanied by fatigue and fever. The clinical course of SLE varies from mild to severe, and typically involves alternating periods of remission and relapse.
    What causes lupus
SLE is an autoimmune disorder which develops when the body's own immune system, which normally protects against cancers and invading infections, begins to attack the patient's own tissues (known medically as a “loss of self-tolerance”). This occurs first through the production of “auto-antibodies” (antibodies are immune system cells that attack foreign microbes; auto-antibodies attack a person's own cells). As the attack continues, other immune system cells join the fight. This leads to inflammation, blood vessel abnormalities (vasculitis) and deposition of immune system cells in organs which causes tissue damage.

      Lupus Information
by Michelle Petri, M.D., M.P.H. The following is a transcript of a talk Dr. Petri gave at the British Columbia Lupus Society Symposium in November, 2002. What are the Symptoms of Lupus? First off, lupus is not rare. But we definitely need a spokesperson. We need someone famous to take on lupus as their cause. The problem with lupus is, people can't tell how sick you really are. That's one of the reasons lupus doesn't get the respect it deserves. When my patients apply for disability, often they are turned down. One of the major things that happens in lupus is chronic fatigue, and there is no way to measure that. Looking at the malar rash in lupus, how does a doctor know it isn't the worst acne? Because it spares the areas around the nose and under the nose that are shaded from ultraviolet light. How do you know if it's lupus or another form of arthritis? Well, hopefully with diagnostic tests. In addition, the arthritis of lupus is not deforming. The ligaments and tendons around the joints loosen, but there is not permanent destruction of the bones.

Lupus is an autoimmune disease affecting mostly women and causing various effects throughout different parts of the body. Its severity can range from very mild to extremely serious depending on which body organs are afflicted. Lupus is difficult to diagnose and often misdiagnosed unless there is a characteristic symptom such as the butterfly-shaped rash over the cheeks. There is no single definitive blood test for lupus and doctors have to make the diagnosis based on a variety of symptoms and diagnostic tests . Lupus is one of a group of conditions with vague symptoms such as fatigue or malaise , and may need to be distinguished from fibromyalgia chronic fatigue syndrome Type 2 diabetes depression ... multiple sclerosis , or various other conditions.
