What are the symptoms of lupus nephritis?

    How is lupus nephritis diagnosed?
Diagnosis may require urine and blood tests as well as a kidney biopsy.
    • Urine test: Blood or protein in the urine is a sign of kidney damage. Blood test: The kidneys remove waste materials like creatinine and urea from the blood. If the blood contains high levels of these substances, kidney function is declining. Your doctor should estimate your glomerular filtration rate based on your creatinine score.

Lupus Introduction Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic, usually life-long, potentially fatal autoimmune disease characterized by unpredictable exacerbations and remissions with variable clinical manifestations. In Lupus SLE there is a high probability for clinical involvement of the joints, skin, kidney, brain, lung, heart, serosa and gastrointestinal tract. Women and minorities are disproportionately affected and Lupus SLE is most common in women of child-bearing age although it has ben reported in both extremes of life (e.g. diagnosed in infants and in the tenth decade of life). The prevalence in the Unites States had been estimated as approximately 500,000 but a recent telephone survey commissioned by the Lupus Foundation of America suggested a prevalence of as many as 2,000,000. A recent study identified a prevalence of 500 per 100,000 (1:200) in women residing in the area surrounding Birmingham, Alabama. The prognosis for patients with Lupus (SLE) has greatly improved over the last few decades with at least 80-90% of all patients surviving ten years. Thereafter life expectancy approximates that of age matched controls. This improvement reflects the general advancements in health care (i.e. dialysis, antibiotics, antihypertensives, newer immunosuppressives with more favorable efficacy to toxicity ration) but also the specialized care available for patients with SLE.

Overabundance of Immune Cells Might Trigger Lupus
Study spots overactivity of genes that prevent cell death in those with autoimmune disease
By Amanda Gardner Posted 2/14/08 THURSDAY, Feb. 14 (HealthDay News) Researchers from Saint Louis University report that a pile-up of superfluous immune cells might contribute to lupus, a finding which could point to new therapies for the autoimmune disease.
    Related News
"We're on the precipice of finding new treatments for lupus," said Dr. Jill Buyon, a professor of medicine at New York University School of Medicine. "There are a myriad of targets at different levels of the immune system. What we're seeking are therapies that are targeted that would not cause patients to have overwhelming infection [as side effects]. This paper supports the notion that such therapeutic approaches might be possible." More than 1.5 million Americans have lupus, a disease in which a hyperactive immune system assaults otherwise healthy organs, such as the kidney, brain, heart, lungs and skin, as well as joints and blood.

    Lupus (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus)
  • What Is It? Symptoms Diagnosis Expected Duration ... Additional Info
  • What Is It? Lupus develops when your body's immune system mistakenly attack the body's own cells rather than protecting them from outside invaders. Immune proteins called autoantibodies attack cells in many different parts of the body, causing inflammation and tissue damage in the joints, skin, kidney, nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves), blood, heart, lungs, digestive system and eyes. Autoantibodies also can attach themselves to body chemicals, forming abnormal molecules called immune complexes that trigger additional inflammation and injury when they are deposited in various organs and tissues.

For example, the National Public Health Association reports that in the year 2000, nearly 8 percent of Caucasians were considered to be in fair or poor health compared to nearly 13 percent of Latinos, nearly 14 percent of African Americans, and more than 17 percent of Native Americans. In addition to ethnicity (race, cultural values, beliefs, and practices), some potential reasons for racial health disparities include communication barriers, lack of access to care, lower income levels, and lack of insurance. Facts About Gender and Racial Disparities in Lupus
    • Lupus targets women and minorities. Lupus is estimated to affect 1 to 1.5 million Americans, 90 percent of whom are women. African-American women are three times more likely to get lupus than Caucasian women and to suffer worse symptoms. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), as many as one in every 250 African-American women has lupus. Latino, Asian, and Native American women have an increased incidence of lupus. In fact, lupus is twice as prevalent among Asian-American and Latino women as it is among Caucasian women.

      Symptoms
SLE symptoms may develop slowly over months or years, or they may appear suddenly. Symptoms tend to be worse during winter months, perhaps because prolonged exposure to sunlight in the summer causes a gradual build-up of factors that trigger symptoms months later.
      Arthritic Pain
The most common symptom is joint pain, which occurs in about 90% of patients with SLE. Characteristics of this symptom vary widely:
      • It is often accompanied by swelling and redness. It can last from hours to months. It may be mild or severe. It can occur in one joint, move from one to another, or flare erratically. Pain often occurs in the morning and improves during the day, only to return later when the patient tires. The joints most affected are fingers, wrists, elbows, knees, and ankles. (Joints in the spine and neck are not affected.)

Syndication: RSS 2.0 19 Feb 2008 Novell hack week One of the things that have been sitting in my TODO list for a few years is to improve the performance of the Regex engine in Mono, both by speeding up the interpreter and by compiling the regular expressions to IL code so that the JIT could optimize it. This seemed like a good project for hack week and Zoltan joined me doing the implementation. I worked on a new compiler/interpreter combination that uses simplified opcodes, with the aim of making their execution faster and also making the translation to IL code easier. As an example, the old interpreter used a 'Char' opcode to match a single char, but this opcode has several runtime options to ignore the case, negate the assertion and go backward in the string. Each option required decoding and conditional branching at runtime, so removing this overhead should improve performance significantly. Zoltan made a clever observation: he could reuse the new interpreter for bytecodes that the IL engine he was working on couldn't yet handle and so he used dynamic methods with the same signature as the method in the interpreter that evaluates the regex bytecode. This design has also the nice property that compiled regular expressions will be garbage collected (as opposed to the MS runtime that, at least in the 1.1 version, will leak in this case).
