In a majority of cases, symptoms can be eliminated with antibiotics , especially if diagnosis and treatment begins early in the course of illness. Late, delayed, or inadequate treatment can lead to "late stage" or "chronic" Lyme disease that can be disabling and difficult to treat. Presently there is no clear evidence that this post-Lyme disease syndrome is caused by persistent infection with

What is Lyme disease? What causes Lyme disease?
Lyme disease is a bacterial illness caused by a bacterium called a " spirochete ." In the United States, the actual name of the bacterium is Borrelia burgdorferi . In Europe, another bacterium, Borrelia afzelii , also causes Lyme disease. Certain ticks found on deer harbor the bacterium in their stomachs. Lyme disease is spread by these ticks when they bite the skin, which permits the bacterium to infect the body. Lyme disease is not contagious from an affected person to someone else. Lyme disease can cause abnormalities in the skin, joints, heart, and nervous system.

You've probably heard of Lyme disease. It's often associated with heavily wooded or grassy areas where deer live. Lyme disease is most common in the northeastern United States and the Pacific Northwest, as well as the northern midwestern states.
    What Is Lyme Disease?
Lyme disease is an infection caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi . This bacterium is usually found in animals like mice and deer. It can be carried to people from these animals by Ixodes ticks (known as black-legged or deer ticks). These ticks pick up Borrelia burgdorferi when they bite infected animals and then infect humans by biting them and passing the bacteria into the person's bloodstream. Sound gross? Maybe. But you can be sure that you won't witness this process: It's very hard to see the ticks themselves. Immature ticks, or nymphs, are about the size of a poppy seed. Adult ticks are about the size of a sesame seed. Because the ticks are hard to find, it helps to be aware of the symptoms of Lyme disease. It's easy to overlook a tick bite. Many people who get Lyme disease don't remember being bitten. The good news is that most tick bites don't result in Lyme disease.

    http://www.cincinnatihyperbarics.com/lyme_disease.html
Innovative Therapies for Body and Mind
Effects of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy On Lyme Disease
by William P. Fife, Ph. D. 29 January 1998 The purpose of this study was to determine if hyperbaric oxygen therapy affected Lyme disease caused by the spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi. The spirochete B. burgdorferi is a microaerophilic organism carried by the Deer tick (Ixodid) and transferred to humans and other mammals by its bite. Symptoms often begin by a bulls-eye rash and erythema migrans. Symptoms may include pain in joints and muscles, sore throat, fever, swollen glands, and mental " fogginess". If not diagnosed within the first one or two months, the disease may become a chronic infection. At that time it apparently becomes sequestered in fibroblasts and other cells which, in turn appear to protect it against effective treatment by all known antibiotics so far tested. The disease is difficult to diagnose without serological findings and requires the skill of a highly qualified physician, experienced in treating this disease. Top Rationale: It was shown by Austin that the spirochete could not survive if transferred in air to another host, but would survive if transferred in a gas mixture of 4% oxygen. This demonstrated that the spirochete could not survive in an oxygen partial pressure of 160-mm Hg (the partial pressure of oxygen in air), but could survive in a partial pressure of 30-mm Hg (which is the partial pressure of 4% oxygen at 1 atmosphere, absolute (ground level pressure). Therefore, it seems clear that a lethal level of oxygen for the spirochete falls somewhere between 30 mm Hg, and 160 mm Hg.

Through Internet and library research, and interviews with local experts, the students learned about the causes and effects of Lyme disease. They discovered that the State had inadequate data on the prevalence of deer ticks, so the students decided to gather data on how many deer ticks were in their community. Working with scientists from the State Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation, students developed a safety protocol to use while they were doing field surveys—including wearing full-body Tyvek suits to protect themselves. After gathering the data (which they reported to state agencies), students determined that Lyme disease was indeed a threat in their area and set out to educate their community. They brainstormed different ways to educate the public and then formed small working groups according to their personal interests. Each group created goals, an action plan, a timeline and an outline of individual tasks. To help educate their community, the students produced a movie about Lyme disease, a web page, a benefit dinner (with a PowerPoint presentation about the disease), a radio interview, a public service announcement, informational pamphlets and a puppet show for elementary students. By reaching out through so many different means, the students were able to inform many community members about the dangers of Lyme disease.

The same may be said of trying to diagnose this disease in horses. In the horse, Borrelia burgdorferi may cause clinical signs of disease which resemble other diseases or the organism may be present and cause no clinical signs of disease. In addition, this spirochete is extremely difficult to isolate from a live horse. So, in order to diagnose a horse with
