Okay, plans for tomorrow: Wake up early. Catch shuttle. Go to campus. Work if I can, pass out somewhere if I can't. Try to finish physics assignment, possibly visit English professors to explain to them in person why debilitating disease is making me look like a slacker. Otherwise use email. Eat regular meals in Sharples to help combat cabin fever and antibiotic-related nausea (main reason for going to campus instead of remaining in a fetal position in my room). Remember to go easy on the milk since it supposedly interferes with absorption. Don't know how I could survive three weeks without milk products OR calcium supplements, so I just have to be careful. Half a glass a day or something. I'll look up other good calcium sources. No candy, ice cream, or other things that make living worthwhile.

Lyme Disease Spring Bites : Preventing Lyme Disease: As spring unfolds, people across the country emerge from their wintertime captivity to enjoy the great outdoors. Unfortunately, another creature makes an entrance in the spring too the deer tick, best known as the carrier of Lyme disease. Lyme disease is a serious bacterial infection that can affect your joints, nervous system and heart. The key to preventing the disease is avoiding tick bites. Stay bite-free and keep your children and pets bite-free too. Please vaccinate your pets, ask your veterinarian. Lyme disease was first described in the United States in the town of Old Lyme, Connecticut in 1977, but has now been reported in most parts of the United States. Most cases occur in the Northeast, upper Midwest, and along the Pacific coast. Mice and deer are the most commonly infected animals that serve as host to the tick. Most infections occur in the spring and summer. The bacteria that causes this disease is named: Borrelia burgdorferi

Lyme Disease Information from CDC Introduction: Lyme disease was named in 1977 when arthritis was observed in a cluster of children in and around Lyme, Connecticut. Other clinical symptoms and environmental conditions suggested that this was an infectious disease probably transmitted by an arthropod. Further investigation revealed that Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferi . These bacteria are transmitted to humans by the bite of infected deer ticks and cause more than 16,000 infections in the United States each year. From left to right: The deer tick ( Ixodes scapularis ) adult female, adult male, nymph, and larva on a centimeter scale. Vector: Black-legged ticks ( Ixodes scapularis ) are responsible for transmitting Lyme disease bacteria to humans in the northeastern and north-central United States. On the Pacific Coast, the bacteria are transmitted to humans by the western black-legged tick ( Ixodes pacificus Ixodes ticks are much smaller than common dog and cattle ticks. In their larval and nymphal stages, they are no bigger than a pinhead. Ticks feed by inserting their mouths into the skin of a host and slowly take in blood.

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection transmitted by tick bites. There are a variety of symptoms of Lyme disease including a skin rash around the tick bite and various later general symptoms such as fever fatigue and many other possible symptoms . Lyme disease can also affect the joints, central nervous system, and the heart. Method of treatment for Lyme disease is usually by various antibiotics Lyme disease is difficult to diagnose, especially if the characteristic skin rash around the tick bite is absent. Lyme disease is one of a group of conditions with vague symptoms such as fatigue aches , or malaise . In mild cases, people may not even seek medical advice unless symptoms become more severe. Lyme disease it may need to be distinguished from

      What is a probability calculator?
The probability calculator is a simple program that computes the post-test probability of Lyme disease in a patient based on serologic test results and an accurate pre-test probability. The program (below) is an electronic version of a graphic nomogram of Bayes' Theorem, originally published by Terrence J. Fagan, MD, in the New England Journal of Medicine (V. 293:257, 1975) and included in the the ACP Initiative on Lyme Disease's Guide to Clinical Practice
What is the purpose of the probability calculator?
The calculator measures the impact of an ELISA test result on the probability of Lyme disease in a patient. For example, the likelihood ratio of a positive ELISA test result

BI160: Development of Vaccines to Infectious Diseases HISTORY Lyme disease is a cyclic disease which has chronic, multi-systemic, neuropsychiatric manifestations. [1] It causes functional, chemical, and structural changes to the brain and alters almost every organ system of the body. It is caused by the spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected deer ticks [2]. In 1975, Lyme Disease was classified as a new disease in response to approximately 50 cases of pediatric arthritis in the town of Lyme, Connecticut. These cases were originally diagnosed as “Lyme Arthritis,” until the unique symptomology indicated a different etiology. This was not the first reported incidence of Lyme, as it been documented as early as 1883 by Alfred Buchwald, but it paved the way for further research into the disease. Since 1975, the prevalence of the disease has increased many fold, but so has our understanding of it. The determination of the causative agent of the disease, Borrelia burgdorferi , and its vector, the Ixodes tick has led to the development of various medical interventions and vaccine approaches. As our understanding of the disease deepens, the prospects for vaccine development become more numerous and more promising.

Lyme Disease Introduction Etiological agent = Borrelia burgdorferi (a gram [-] spirochete) Click here for a photo of Borrelia burgdorferi Lyme disease (LD) is a tickborne disease. The etiologic agent, Borrelia burgdorferi , is not directly transmitted from animals to humans, but by harboring infected ticks, domestic animals may increase the chances for human exposure. Background: Lyme disease was first diagnosed among a group of children in Lyme, CT in 1975. Astute parents and pediatricians realized that it was very unusual to have a large number of cases of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (the initial erroneous diagnosis) in a limited geographic area. They pushed public health officials and researchers to pursue a different etiology. Lyme disease has now been diagnosed in all 48 states in the continental U.S. (some cases are due to travel to endemic states) and throughout the world, although the specific tick vectors and strains of Borrelia vary somewhat from one region to another. In addition, strain-related differences in clinical presentations may also occur. Lyme disease is the most common tickborne disease in the U.S. From 1993-1997, an average of 12,451 cases of human LD were reported to the CDC each year and in 2000, 17,730 cases were reported. (It is a reportable disease throughout the U.S., but the actual incidence is likely to be much higher in endemic areas than official reports would suggest.)
