For other uses, see Macaw (disambiguation) Macaws are small to large, often colourful New World parrots . Of the many different Psittacidae (true parrots) genera , six are classified as macaws: Ara Anodorhynchus Cyanopsitta Primolius Orthopsittaca , and Diopsittaca . Previously, the members of the genus Primolius were placed in Propyrrhura , but the former is correct as per ICZN rules . Macaws are native to Mexico Central America South America , and formerly the Caribbean . Most species are associated with forest, especially rainforest , but others prefer woodland or savanna -like habitats. There is no unifying characteristic which differentiates macaws from all other types of parrots. All species have a long tail, but so do conures . The bare facial patch surrounding the eye and extending to the beak is unique to macaws, but it is reduced in some species, and limited to a yellow patch around the eyes and a second patch near the base of the beak in the members of the genus Anodorhynchus Some of the macaw species are popularly known for their impressive size. The largest parrot in length and wingspan is the Hyacinth Macaw. The heaviest macaw is the Buffon's, although the heaviest parrot is the flightless

Overview Kindly provided by Dr. Rob Marshall - http://www.birdhealth.com.au Originating from South America, the macaw is a striking and impressive bird. A large variety of Macaw species are available as pets, ranging from the smaller Macaws such as the Red Shouldered Macaw (30cm in length) and Yellow-Collared Macaw (38cm in length) to the larger Scarlet Macaw (85cm in length). Macaws are very intelligent birds and require an owner who is willing to provide the necessary stimulation to keep them happy and healthy. This includes providing lots of toys on which they can chew. Macaws deprived of such toys often become very destructive, using their large, strong beaks to chew on their cage and other household items.

The Large Macaw FAQ
by
Jodi Giannini
There is probably no other tropical bird so "tropical" as a macaw. Whether we see them on travelogues, tropical shirts or airline commericials (United airlines used a piano-playing Blue and Gold), we immediately think of lush, exotic, and far-away places. But why go far away? A macaw, aside from being colorful, can also be a loyal, loving, (if somewhat raucous) lifelong companion. Most of the macaw species tend to be five things, big and loud, and loud and big, and demanding. Even the "mini-macaws" can be loud and demanding. They are smart birds, and need attention and toys to keep them busy. The macaws are also vigorous chewers. Keep this in mind if you have heirloom furniture or small children. (I'm kidding!) But I am serious about the furniture. Chewing is the macaw's hobby. Aquiring a baby macaw is the best bet, although a number of breeders whom I talked to suggested getting a weaned baby, especially if you've never hand-fed before. But this depends on your gumption. I know of some people whose very first bird was a still-feeding macaw. Breeders are generally the safest course, because they have dealt with the birds from hatchdate on. They will also usually offer a health guarantee, advice, and help if you have problems.
The macaws most commonly available as pets (in order) are:
Ara ararauna Blue and Gold Macaw, Blue and Yellow Macaw

The Scarlet Macaw is arguably the most magnificent bird of the parrot family. With their wide strong wings, macaws can reach speeds of 35 miles per hour. They often fly in pairs or small groups and often call to each other in raucous hoarse voices. Macaws appear to prefer higher elevations and riparian (riverine) forests. They are known to have very large territories. They prefer to nest in holes high up in trees and lay one or two eggs. They feed on specific fruits such as polewood, roaming large areas searching for clumps of their favorite foods. As recent as 1989, the reported Belizean population of Scarlet Macaws was a total of 24 birds. But in 1996, a new population of over 100 birds was "discovered" south of the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. Unfortunately, over most of its range, the Scarlet macaw is endangered, a victim of human greed - many have been taken as a commodity in the pet trade. KEY FACTS SIZE

NATURE takes you to the deepest enclaves of the Amazon for a first-hand look at macaws.
Everyone loves macaws. Playful, intelligent, beautiful, they are the stars of parrot parks and zoos, and the cherished pets of devoted owners around the world. All of which makes them prime targets for poachers, who can make enormous profits from illegal sales of the birds. Thousands are smuggled from the wild each year, and many die in the process.
In the forests of South America, several species of macaw are severely endangered . But there is hope on the horizon. Dr. Charlie Munn, a wealthy American who is also a leading ornithologist and world expert on parrots, has begun a campaign to promote eco-tourism as a means of saving the birds. Employing former poachers as conservationists, and providing locals with the means to start and maintain a trade in tourism instead of smuggling, he's betting that instead of buying birds, their fans will pay to see them in the wild.

HOME IN THE WILD IN THE CLASS RESOURCES ... CLASSROOM VANISHING IN THE WILD: HYACINTH MACAW Many people are familiar with macaws and parrots as pet store animals. It might be difficult, then, for people to imagine what these large, loud, beautiful birds look like in the wild. The spectacular flash of color of a wild macaw is becoming more and more of a rare sight. Species Description and Range The largest species of macaw, the brilliant-blue hyacinth grows to be up to 40 inches (1 m) long. The hyacinth macaw survives today in three known distinct populations in southern Brazil, eastern Bolivia and northeastern Paraguay. It is possible that smaller, fragmented populations occur in other areas of its range. Although it is difficult to estimate, some people believe there were more than 100,000 hyacinth macaws before the arrival of Amerindians in South America. In 1990, the wild population was estimated to be 2,500 birds. The world's captive population is probably much larger, numbering in the thousands. Natural History The hyacinth macaw is found primarily in riverside tropical rain forests and palm swamps. Its
