Hyacinth Macaw The Hyacinth macaw is the most majestic of all parrots. Although the Hyacinth Macaw and Green Wing Macaw are both commonly referred to as the Gentle Giant of the macaw species, the Hyacinths are truly the dream bird of all bird lovers. The Hyacinth macaw can attain the total length of up to 42 inches and have a beak pressure that can easily disassemble a welded wrought iron cage bar by bar in a very short time. In spite of their tremendous strength, this is one of the most laid back and easy-going of all of the macaws. A Hyacinth Macaw baby must be taught, at a very early age, about not putting pressure on fingers because they could easily hurt someone very badly without the intention to hurt. They just don't realize their own strength. One consideration in acquiring a Hyacinth might be in obtaining a cage that will be strong to contain him. Any cage that is held together with welds may not last for even a year before he realizes that he can snap the welds. All welds on cages for a Hyacinth Macaw should be double welded. Some of the stainless steel cages available are ideal, but you can expect to spend in excess of $2,000 for a cage of this type. Even a stainless cage with welded bars can be disassembled.

    To Other Macaws
The Hyacinth Macaw ( Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus ) is one of 16 living species of macaws and the largest parrot in the world. There are six genera of macaws and the Hyacinth is one of three species of the genus Anodorhynchus . One of the other two species of this genus is thought to be extinct ( A. glaucus , the Glaucus Macaw) and the other ( A. leari , called either the Lear's or Indigo Macaw) is severely threatened. Anodorhynchus macaws (an=no, odo=tooth, rhynchus=nose). There are two bare areas of the face, a prominent and deeply golden colored eye ring and the peri-mandibular area making a beautiful contrast with the rich blue plumage. Both observations in the wild and of captive-bred individuals confirm that immatures have similar plumage to adults and that they are very slow to reach independence. The Hyacinth Macaw's historical range included a large area of northeastern, central and southwestern Brazil, eastern Bolivia and northeastern Paraguay. Today, it is know from the interior of northeastern Brazil, central and southwestern Brazil, easternmost Bolivia and, some claim, extreme northeastern Paraguay. The outline of the range has not contracted much, but the number of individuals is much reduced. Recent estimates of the number surviving in the wild have ranged from 2,500 to 5,000. Persecution has taken the form of illegal pet trade and hunting for food and feather (see photos of Indian crafts). The high value of these birds in captivity ($7,000-$10,000 in the United States) has driven illegal trade in Brazil long after they received legal "protection."

      MACAWS - PERSONALITY PLUS!!
      by Bill and Sandy Harrison
Prospective purchasers of macaws often ask which species we believe make the best pets and which ones are more difficult to own. Macaws are near and dear to our hearts as we not only breed them, but also have a number of them as pets. In our experience, we have seen a noticable difference in personality among the various macaw species. But we have also found that all macaws MUST receive attention and love from their owners if they are to become good pets. Out of the 17 species of macaws, we are privileged to have 11 of them at our aviary. We have been able to watch them under the SAME controlled circumstances. This allows us to judge which birds we think make good pets, which are more forgiving and which species, while lovely, should not be *pushed* as a family pet. We do not have a lot of birds, in fact around 50 at the moment. For the most part, they came to us because they needed relocating. Some became mates/companions for birds that we had reared from babies. Some came because they were old, worn out breeders. Others were beloved pets in homes where circumstances changed. Some came because of death and some because they were feared. Whatever the reason...they came. Consequently, not all of these birds were reared by us. Since they came to us at different ages, we do have a cross section to some degree. Some are well into the 30's and pushing 40 years old. So while we do have a cross section of ages this is mitigated by the fact that they are all here, under similar living conditions, and receive the same attention, the same interaction with us and see us interacting with our flock in the same way.

    Brief Instrument Description of the
Multicenter Airborne Coherent Atmospheric Wind Sensor (MACAWS) Platform Overview MACAWS is an airborne side-scanning Doppler laser radar (lidar) which measures two dimensional wind fields, vertical wind profiles, and aerosol backscatter from clear air and clouds. Range varies from 10-30 km depending on aerosol abundance and cloud attenuation. Upon exiting the aircraft, the lidar beam is completely eye-safe. MACAWS is developed and operated cooperatively by the atmospheric lidar remote sensing groups of NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, NOAA Environmental Technology Laboratory, and Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Instrument Description MACAWS consists of: a frequency-stable pulsed transverse-excited atmospheric pressure carbon dioxide laser emitting 0.5-1.0 J per pulse at 10.6 micron wavelength at a nominal pulse repetition frequency (PRF) of ~20 Hz; a coherent receiver employing a cryogenically-cooled HgCdTe detector; a 0.3 m off-axis paraboloidal telescope shared by the transmitter and receiver in a monostatic configuration; a ruggedized optical table and three-point support structure; a scanner using two counter-rotating germanium wedges to refract the transmitted beam in the desired direction; an inertial navigation system (INS) for frequent measurements of aircraft attitude and speed; data processing, display, and storage devices; and an Operations Control System (OCS) to coordinate all system functions.

Offers african greys, cockatoos, and green wing macaws.
    http://www.parrotsperch.com/
Welcome to The Parrot's Perch Website! I'm Tina Usher, and all of my life I have been captivated by all types of birds. I am a small aviary just outside of Chicago and I have been breeding the large parrots since 1981. I specialize in Congo African Greys, Moluccan, Umbrella and Medium Sulphur Crested (Elenora) Cockatoos and Green Wing Macaws. My home raised, hand-fed babies are well adjusted, gentle and loving. My clients rave about how much larger and more outgoing their parrots are compared to other pet birds they see. I also provide in- your -home grooming and behavioral consultations. Seeing the need, I am now offering care, training and behavior workshops to help bird owners mend and/or improve their relationships with their avian pals. I'm using my education, training, experience and love for our birds to teach people how to understand and live happily with their avian companions.

    The Yellow-Collared Macaw
    by Paul Soltero
T his is Poco at the time this photo (6 months old) was taken of her, she showed no trace of a yellow collar. She is now 4 and has a full collar. The Yellow- Collared Macaw (Ara auricollis) is originally from the center of South America ( SW Brazil, E Bolivia, N. Paraguay and N.Argentina ). These are highly adaptable birds as indicated by the varied eco-systems they inhabit in this home range. These include Rainforest, swamps, dry savannah and the foothills of the Andes Mountains. They have been observed to congregate in flocks of 500+ when roosting for the night outside of the breeding season*. According to Dr. Charles Munn who is currently doing resarch in the area "I have never seen more than 4-6 at a time, though I see them perhaps 5-10 times per day ".In the wild their diet is every bit as varied as is their home range. It consists of fruits, nuts, seeds, green matter, an occasional bug and what ever the local farmer has to offer. The Yellow- Collared, which is also known as the Yellow-Naped, Gold-Naped or Cassins Macaw can be as large as 17 inches from head to tail. This bird is typical of the group called "Mini Macaws" the primary body color being a bright green with blue flights and red and blue feathers mixed in the tail. What sets the Yellow-Collar apart is the blue-black feathers of the crown the whiteish tip of its beak and of course the yellow collar. It also possesses the bare eye and cheek patch typical of all Macaws.
