Blackstone Aviaries Red Fronted Macaws Red Fronted Macaws are considered the smallest of the large macaws or the largest of the small macaws. They are about the body size and weight of a large Yellow head amazon, except that they have long tails. The babies personality is more like a big macaw, rather then that of the small macaws. They are sweet, affectionate, playful and are great talkers. One of the first years we raised them, the baby Red Fronts all learned how to say " Look out below ". Then they taught all of the other babies in the nursery how to say it. Over the years we have enjoyed introducing Red Fronted Macaws to many of our Bird Shops and Pet Stores. We always hear high praise for the babies. They are very plain up to 9 months old, except for the little red spot on their face, and then they start to go through their first molt. The beautiful red/orange feathers are always a delight to see coming in on their foreheads and bend of their wings. Red Fronted Macaws make excellent family birds. They seem to accept everyone in the

Macaw Profile
Macaws are beautiful, brilliantly colored members of the parrot family.
Many macaws have vibrant plumage. The coloring is suited to life in Central and South American rain forests, with their green canopies and colorful fruits and flowers. The birds boast large, powerful beaks that easily crack nuts and seeds, while their dry, scaly tongues have a bone inside them that makes them an effective tool for tapping into fruits.
Macaws also have gripping toes that they use to latch onto branches and to grab, hold, and examine items. The birds sport graceful tails that are typically very long.
Macaws are intelligent, social birds that often gather in flocks of 10 to 30 individuals. Their loud calls, squawks, and screams echo through the forest canopy. Macaws vocalize to communicate within the flock, mark territory, and identify one another. Some species can even mimic human speech.
Flocks sleep in the trees at night, and in the morning they may fly long distances to feed on fruit, nuts, insects, and snails. Some species also eat damp soil, which may help to neutralize chemicals in their fruity diet and ease their stomachs.

Printouts The Scarlet Macaw ( Ara macao ) is a large type of parrot that is found in tropical rain forests of Central and South America, including Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil. It lives in the canopy (the tree leaves) and emergent layer (the tops of the very highest trees) of the rainforest. Scarlet Macaws are an endangered species due to their capture as pets, and loss of habitat.

Do Parrots Spread Seeds?
Instead of spreading or dispersing seed like many mammals and birds, parrots are seed predators. Seed predators are animals that eat and destroy seeds rather than eating the fruit and leaving the seeds. Seed dispersing animals do not harm the seeds inside fruit and move the seeds away from its parent tree, dispersing or spreading seeds that may germinate into new trees. Parrots play a different, but still important, role in the ecosystem. By eating and destroying seeds, parrots limit the number of seeds that can germinate into new trees and plants. NESTING NEWS - June 2000 The Scarlet Macaw project, under sponsorship from Wildlife Trust , is progressing well. We are monitoring 4 nests this year. All appear to have fledged successfully. Also of importance, we documented the trans-migration of the scarlet macaw in March. These birds most definitely fly from the western flanks of the Maya Mountains, congregating within the southern Maya Mts to forage for food, then returning to the Raspaculo River valley. This interconnectivity between one side of the Maya Divide and the other appears to be vital towards their survival; the western portion is currently under threat by a hydro-project, which I am on the forefront in opposition. The data we have obtained since 1998 has caused many to seriously consider the implications of the dam project. - Sharon Matola

or
How Body Size Affects the Conservation Status of New World Parrots
by Charles A. Munn, Ph.D. V. What the International Aviculturists Society, World Parrot Trust, and Wildlife Conservation Society have done with your contributions in 1994 to stop the decline of some of the world's rarest and most beautiful large macaws. The most crucial conservation action that is required for endangered large New World parrots to maintain or recover to safe population levels is to restrict the activities of roving trappers and hunters, and that is exactly what your contributions have allowed us to do. You should be proud to learn that your contributions at the January, 1994, IAS meeting in West Palm Beach made it possible for "your" field biologists (who include me and several university-trained Bolivians and Brazilians) to stop the trapping of rare macaws by local bird trappers in Bolivia and Brazil. In both countries, your teams went undercover to find the most energetic, ambitious, hard-working local bird trappers. In both countries, your teams negotiated and recently hammered out agreements with these skilled trappers to pay them modest monthly salaries to protect the very same rare macaws that they used to trap for unscrupulous urban middlemen. With your help, we have broken this vicious cycle of parrot destruction and made it possible for local parrot trappers to become parrot protectors. They now earn steady salaries of between 170 and 400 dollars per month (depending on the region and their work responsibilities). These salary levels may sound very low, but in fact, they have proven to be more than adequate to allow these humble, hardworking men to add to their family's diet adequate amounts of fresh fruit, vegetables , and cheese as well as occasional, tough goat meat or beef. With these salaries they also can now afford to pay the 5-10 dollars per month that each of their children needs for school supplies and clothes.

Regardless of your political opinion, however, there is no dispute that the Catalina Macaw hybrid is an exquisitely gorgeous bird! Catalina or Rainbow Macaws grow to about 34 inches in length, and are characterized by their incredibly varied and bright plumage! The wings are mostly orange-yellow with orange-yellow undersides and blue edging topside. Their chests are gold-yellow, topped by a blue-green head with a green crown! The beak is horn colored. The back of the neck and back are shaded orange and the Catalina Macaw's tail is tapered and quite long. Generally, Catalina Macaws do not like to have their tail feathers touched! Catalina Macaws look a lot like Harlequin Macaws and the two are often confused.
