Dancer's Business Tips Mail Fraud
by: Zaina Hart Jul 11 2007
By Zaina Hart (Published in Jareeda, 2000 and parts re-written here for clarity) I have been asked to add this article to the iShimmy.com web site by several dancers who recently went through similar experience and used this article as a guide in how to handle their own situations. It is frightening and sad to know this kind of thing is still occurring - - e-mail fraud, identity theft, harassment, etc. So, I am sharing this experience again hoping it may in some way be beneficial. I had no idea where this assault could be coming from and had no clue as to what I could have done that was so bad it could provoke this kind of sick behavior. I asked myself over and over, was this someone from the dance community or from the company where I worked? I considered finding another job, backing away from the dance community or even retiring. The thought that someone hated me so much was overwhelming. What I found was somewhat frightening as this individual is involved in our dance community.

MAIL FRAUD Mail Fraud is a scheme to get money or anything of value from you by offering a product, service, or investment opportunity that does not live up to its claims. Prosecutors must prove the claims were intentionally misrepresented and that the mail was used to carry out the scheme. The Postal Inspection Service investigates violations of the mail fraud law. Consumer complaints are the primary basis for investigation by Postal Inspectors. Be an informed consumer when you shop by mail. You can save time and money when you shop by mail. Most mail-order companies are honest and stand by their product and services. Unfortunately there are a few rotten apples who dive direct mail advertisers a bad name. They cheat people by peddling worthless products, medical quackery, and get-rich-quick schemes. Some fly-by-nights take your money and send you nothing. Mail fraud artists frequently rely on the same old tricks; you may even be familiar with some of them. Students subject to e-mail fraud By Mallory Diamond Staff Writer September 6th, 2007 Senior Casey Buss logged into her Ithaca e-mail account when she returned to school in August to find 300 pages of unfamiliar e-mails clogging her inbox — a total of nearly 3,000 alerts, one for every rejected message sent from her account. The e-mails, sent to “undisclosed recipients” from Buss’ account, congratulated the recipient on a lottery win of 552,000 British pounds. In order to claim the winnings, the senders of the e-mail had requested personal information be sent to their “claims agent,” including full name, address, country of residence and telephone number. The e-mails concluded with “Yours Truly, Mrs. Casey Buss.” “The person who hacked into my account went pretty in-depth to change a lot in my e-mail. They went into my signature and changed [it],” said Buss. “I don’t know who this person was sending them to. I don’t know if it was people in my address book … I have no idea. It’s a

The objective of mail fraud is to accomplish a desired result by deception, trickery, concealment, and/or dishonesty, albeit through the use of the United States Mail Service or other private/commercial interstate carriers. An Important Reminder Regarding E-Mail Fraud What You Need to Know As e-mail fraud, also known as phishing, becomes more and more prevalent, Washington Federal Bank for Savings will provide periodic updates and reminders to help guard against this activity, and to protect our valued customers and their sensitive information. Recognizing Fraud Phishers will often use a well-known bank, on-line retailer and/or credit card company names to try to convince recipients to respond to them. Fraudulent e-mail messages can look convincing with company logos and banners copied from the actual web sites. Phishing e-mails may tell you that the bank's security procedures have changed, or that they need you to update or validate your information. You are then directed to a look-alike web site. If you respond, the con artists can use your information to perpetrate identity theft or compromise your accounts. Washington Federal Bank for Savings does not send e-mail messages to customers requesting them to visit any web site to reveal personal, private or business information. If you or anyone in your family receives any e-mails requesting you to log onto a WFB web site and divulge private data, such as account numbers, do not respond or click on any of the links. Presently, Washington Federal Bank for Savings does not operate a transactional website which would provide internet banking.

Mail Fraud
Mail fraud is the use of the U.S. Postal Service in any criminal attempt to gain money or things of value. Whether it is securities fraud, health care fraud, tax fraud, or any number of offenses, the original crime carries its own penalties. The use of the Postal Service or other, private or commercial interstate carrier raises the crime to the level of mail fraud and brings enhanced punishment, including separate federal prosecution for crimes that would otherwise be matters of state jurisdiction. Section 1341 of the U.S. Code states that if anyone involved in a fraud or swindle causes the Postal Service to be used, that person shall be fined, imprisoned for not more than 20 years, or both. Violations affecting financial institutions are punishable by a fine of not more than $1,000,000, imprisonment for not more than 30 years, or both. Section 1342 provides that use of a fictitious name or address through the mail is potentially punishable by a fine and/or up to five years in prison.
