Every year malaria afflicts nearly half a billion people with acute disease and kills over 1 million. A child is killed by malaria every 30 seconds around the clock.
In 2001 an anonymous donor gave $100 million to the Bloomberg School to fund a state-of-the-art research facility that would mount a broad program of basic-science research to treat and control malaria, develop a vaccine and find new drug targets to prevent and cure this deadly disease.
The Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute (JHMRI) started operations in the Bloomberg School’s W. Harry Feinstone Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology i n May 2001. The JHMRI was soon able to attract a critical mass of malaria experts from around the world. Together they are taking a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the Plasmodium parasite, the mosquito and the genes and proteins involved in the transmission of malaria.

http://www.mdtravelhealth.com/infectious/malaria.html
Malaria Malaria is a parasitic infection of red blood cells and the liver caused by any of four related species: Plasmodium falciparum, P. vivax, P. ovale, and P. malariae. (There is recent evidence that a fifth species, P. knowlesi, previous thought to cause malaria only in monkeys, may also cause malaria in humans.) Malaria is transmitted by female Anopheline mosquitoes, which typically bite between dusk and dawn. The chief symptoms are fever, sweats, chills, headache, body aches, and malaise, typically accompanied by anemia and enlargement of the spleen. Complications may include jaundice, low blood sugar, kidney failure, fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema or ARDS), and circulatory collapse. Infections caused by P. falciparum are particularly dangerous because of a propensity for infected red blood cells to obstruct blood flow to the brain, causing seizures, impaired consciousness, and sometimes coma. It is essential for all travelers to take medication to prevent malaria when visiting any area where malaria occurs, especially sub-Saharan Africa, which accounts for a majority of cases of travel-related malaria. In the United States, most cases of malaria occur in travelers who did not take appropriate malaria prophylaxis. Malaria pills should be purchased before departure, since medications obtained in developing nations may be fake. For countries where chloroquine-resistant malaria occurs, which includes most countries with malaria, there is a choice of three medications: mefloquine (Lariam) atovaquone/proguanil (Malarone)(PDF) , or doxycycline.

In June 2005, President Bush launched the President's Malaria Initiative (PMI). He pledged to increase U.S. malaria funding by more than $1.2 billion over five years to reduce deaths due to malaria by 50 percent in 15 African countries and challenged other donor countries, private foundations, and corporations to help reduce the suffering and death caused by this disease. PMI is a collaborative U.S. Government effort led by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)

A Malaria Vaccine Technology Roadmap provides a coherent framework for aligning resources, facilitating partnerships, and identifying pathways to a viable malaria vaccine.
Malaria Vaccine Technology Roadmap Launched at Global Vaccine Research Forum
The Malaria Vaccine Technology Roadmap, a new global strategy, was launched December 4, 2006, at the Global Vaccine Research Forum in Bangkok. The Roadmap calls for joint action among the world's leading international health organizations to accelerate the development and licensing of a highly effective malaria vaccine. It seeks to develop a malaria vaccine by 2025 that would have a protective efficacy of more than 80% against clinical disease and would provide protection for longer than four years. The Roadmap establishes a strategic plan for developing and distributing a safe, effective and affordable vaccine to prevent malaria in children under five years of age in sub-Saharan Africa and other highly endemic regions. "The pace of progress towards a malaria vaccine could dramatically accelerate if these priority areas are successfully pursued," said Dr Melinda Moree, Director of the PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative which coordinated the development of the Roadmap. "Information sharing and collaboration needs to be stepped up to enhance learning across studies and eliminate redundant work. Above all, continued commitment to this initiative is vital. Developing an effective malaria vaccine is an enormous challenge, but it is within reach."

(FAEC) In April 1972, after seven months of testimony, EPA Administrative Law Judge Edmund Sweeney stated that “DDT is not a carcinogenic hazard to man. ... The uses of DDT under the regulations involved here do not have a deleterious effect on freshwater fish, estuarine organisms, wild birds, or other wildlife. ... The evidence in this proceeding supports the conclusion that there is a present need for the essential uses of DDT.”*
Two months later, EPA head
[and Environmental Defense Fund member/fundraiser] William Ruckelshaus - who had never attended a single day’s session in the seven months of EPA hearings, and who admittedly had not even read the transcript of the hearings - overturned Judge Sweeney’s decision. Ruckelshaus declared that DDT was a “potential human carcinogen” and banned it for virtually all uses.** Since Ruckelshaus arbitrarily and capriciously banned DDT, an estimated

    Eradicate malaria? Doubters fuel debate
By Donald G. Mcneil Jr. Published: March 4, 2008 document.writeln(''); E-Mail Article Listen to Article Printer-Friendly 3-Column Format Translate Share Article Text Size Last year, challenging global health orthodoxy, Bill and Melinda Gates called for the eradication of malaria. That is, for exterminating the parasite everywhere and forever, except perhaps in laboratory storage, as has thus far happened to just one disease in history, smallpox. Dr. Margaret Chan, director general of the WHO, backed the call, telling the audience from the dais in Seattle, "I dare you to come along with us."

Mindfulness meditation: Lotus therapy 7 scientists share $1 million prizes in astronomy, neuroscience and study of tiny structures Last month on his swing through Africa, President George W. Bush implicitly endorsed the idea without mentioning the Gateses, saying the United States would lead the eradication effort. Dr. Arata Kochi, the WHO malaria chief, went further than other skeptics, arguing that the specter of eradication is counterproductive. With enough money, he said, current tools like nets, medicines and DDT could drive down malaria cases 90 percent.
