Geography
Malaysia is composed of two parts. Peninsular Malaysia is a long portion of land which extends from the border of Thailand to Singapore . The northern part is mostly covered by dense jungle, while the central part is lightly populated. The western part is a fertile plain extending down to the sea. East Malaysia , the other part of the country, is adjacent to the southern part of Indonesian state of Kalimantan . It is divided between Sarawak and Sabah , with the country of Brunei between them. Malaysia comprises 13 states and two federal territories - Kuala Lumpur and Labuan (an island off the coast of Sabah). Nine of the states have a hereditary ruler respectively from which the Supreme Head of State, the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong (King) is elected every five years. The government is based on parliamentary democracy . The head of the government, the Prime Minister heads the Cabinet of Ministers. Manufacturing forms the largest single component of Malaysia's economy. Malaysia is one of the world's largest producers of rubber, tin, palm oil, timber, pepper and petroleum.

Home Study Abroad Malaysia The two distinct parts of Malaysia, separated from each other by the South China Sea, share a largely similar landscape in that both West and East Malaysia feature coastal plains rising to often densely forested hills and mountains, the highest of which is Mount Kinabalu at 4,095.2 meters (13,435.7 ft) on the island of Borneo. The local climate is equatorial and characterized by the annual southwest (April to October) and northeast (October to February) monsoons. The Strait of Malacca, lying between Sumatra and West Malaysia, is arguably the most important shipping lane in the world. Putrajaya is the newly created administrative capital for the federal government of Malaysia, aimed in part to ease growing congestion within Malaysia's capital city, Kuala Lumpur. The prime minister's office moved in 1999 and the move is expected to be completed in 2005. Kuala Lumpur remains the seat of parliament, as well as the commercial and financial capital of the country. Other major cities include George Town, Ipoh, Johor Bahru and Kuching. Much of Malaysia is clad in tropical rainforest. The majority of the population live on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, which is also the most developed region of the country. Due to its small size, there are no mighty rivers in Malaysia of the magnitude of the Mekong or the Ayeryawady. The tallest mountain in Southeast Asia, Mount Kinabalu, is in the state of Sabah, on the island of Borneo.

Malaysian Geography by Eric Desautels BOUNDARIES Malaysia's largest neighbour (in terms of common borders and shared waterways) is Indonesia. On Peninsular Malaysia, or East Malaysia, the Straits of Malacca separates both countries from the Indian Ocean to the South China Sea. It also has a 1,782-kilometre boundary with the Indonesian region of Kalimantan on the island of Borneo. Also on the island of Borneo, Malaysia shares a long and "snaky" border with the small nation of Brunei. On the Malay Peninsula, the country has a 506-kilometre border with Thailand to the north while the island city-state of Singapore is located off the southern tip of the peninsula. Without having any common land borders, Malaysia's vast territory allows it to have close geographic links with other countries in Southeast Asia. Cambodia and Vietnam are located just north of Peninsular Malaysia across the Gulf of Thailand while the Philippines stretch near to the north-west tip of East Malaysia near the Sabah city of Sandakan. Being a nation of many islands, Malaysia boasts a coastline that is quite high for a state for an area of 329,750 square kilometres. Overall, the country has a total of 4,675 kilometres of coastline (East: 2,607 km, West: 2,068 km)
